Notes on WERS Cross-Section Management Questionnaire equivalence tables

1.   This spreadsheet lists comparable questions from the WERS 1998 and 2004 Employee Profile
     Questionnaires (EPQ) and Management Questionnaires (MQ). Each worksheet relates to the
     relevant section in the 1998 EPQ/MQ, with questions new to the 2004 survey listed in the final
     worksheet.

2.   All substantive changes to questions, response categories or instructions, are noted. In all
     cases, the reader should refer to the 1998 and 2004 questionnaires in order to establish for
     themselves how the precise nature of the changes summarised here are likely to affect their
     proposed analysis.

3.
     Changes to the construction of filters (routing) are also noted. However, changes to the
     operation of filters that arise from alterations to earlier questions (e.g. any change in the routing
     for AFRANCH that might have arisen from changes to ASTATUS) are not routinely specified.

4.   The notes make no mention of the macro change, made throughout the questionnaire, whereby
     all references in 1998 to "employee relations" have been changed to "employment relations" in
     2004. The notes also make no mention of a general change whereby references to "proportions"
     have been altered to "percentages".

5.   The spreadsheet refers explicitly to changes in the substance of the questions asked in the
     interview schedule. It does not seek to document variations between the 1998 and 2004 survey
     datasets (e.g. in the way that data is stored or coded to specific variables), although in most
     cases such variations will be obvious from the notes provided here.

6.   Following on from point 5, users should be aware that the formatting of the Management
     Questionnaire documents for 1998 and 2004 differs in two substantive ways. First, in the 1998
     questionnaire the routing rules are documented in a separate section at the back of the
     questionnaire, whilst in the 2004 document they are brought together with the question text.
     Second, any post-fieldwork response codes arising from verbatim 'other please specify' answers
     are cited in italics within the 1998 MQ. The 2004 MQ does not list these codes. Our focus in
     these worksheets is on documenting changes to the interview schedules, rather than changes to
     the formatting of the questionnaires.
