                    ADMISSION APPEALS CASUAL CLERK



Main purpose of the job

To clerk independent admission appeal panel hearings for William Farr’s
independent appeals panel, in accordance with the legislation the DCSF School
Admissions Code and School Admission Appeals Code and any local guidance.

To work closely with the Appeal Panel members, school’s admissions team and
parents.



Main duties

   1. Make the necessary administrative arrangements for hearings; booking and
      setting up the room; checking the panel and parties have correct paperwork.

   2. Explain the basic procedure to parents and deal with any questions they may
      have before the hearing

   3. Advise on law and procedure at admission appeal hearings and produce a
      detailed and legible written record of the hearing, panel deliberations and
      panel decision with full reasons in line with legislative framework.

   4. As Clerk, act as ‘point of contact’ for the hearing and take responsibility by
      seeking resolution for any unusual issues arising from appeal panel hearings
      eg a panel member not arriving.

   5. Assisting, as appropriate, with any challenges to panel decisions via the Local
      Government Ombudsman.

   6. Contributing to training and updating panel members on the law and
      procedure relevant to admission appeals.

Qualifications and experience
Good standard of education (A level or above) or relevant demonstrable
experience of school appeals practice and procedures
Aptitudes and skills
Strong organisational skills
Word processing skills
Ability to work without supervision
Ability to comprehend and interpret guidance
Ability to communicate legal issues clearly
Accuracy and attention to detail
Good oral and written communication skills including the ability to take
accurate notes
Personal skills
Ability to deal sensitively with people
Ability to deal with difficult or distressed parents
Ability to act with integrity
Ability to remain firm, calm and courteous under pressure
Ability to act assertively as necessary.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
