                                                     JA BizTown™
    JA BizTown is JA Worldwide’s experiential-based, elementary school capstone program. The program encompasses
    important elements of work-readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy, providing students with a solid
    foundation of business, economics, and free enterprise education. Furthermore, the program content augments
    students’ core curriculum in social studies, language arts, and mathematics. Throughout the program, students use
    critical thinking skills to learn about key concepts as they explore and enhance their understanding of free enterprise.

    Units
    Unit 1: Community and Economy (five 45-minute lessons)—Students are introduced to JA BizTown. In the unit
    lessons, students become familiar with the rights and responsibilities of citizenship; examine how goods, services,
    and resources flow between people and businesses; practice making decisions to allocate resources, consider the
    value of providing public goods and services through the government; and identify ways people donate their time,
    money and wisdom to help others.
    Unit 2: Financial Literacy (four 45-minute lessons)—In the unit lessons, students practice using financial products
    in preparation for their visit to JA BizTown. They are introduced to products offered by financial institutions,
    explore how checkbooks work, learn how to purchase items with checks, and learn about the benefits of using
    interest-earning accounts to save money.
    Unit 3: Work-Readiness (four 45-minute lessons)—In the unit lessons, students explore how interests and skills are
    linked to job alternatives, become familiar with skills desired by employers, and participate in team negotiation
    activities. In preparation for the JA BizTown experience, they will complete a job application, practice job interview
    skills, and calculate net pay.
    Unit 4: Business Management (six 45-minute lessons)—In the unit lessons, students complete activities in
    preparation to participate in a full-day visit to the JA BizTown site at the end of this unit. Students examine the “best
    practices” used by many quality businesses, form business teams, determine business costs, and create
    advertisements for their businesses.
    JA BizTown (full day)—Students work as employees in various businesses (facilitated by volunteer educators and
    business professionals); they are paid for their labor, and they manage personal checking and savings accounts.
    Unit 5: After-Visit Debriefing (two 45-minute lessons)—In the unit lessons, students reflect on their JA BizTown
    experience.
    Optional Activities: Each unit lesson includes supplementary activities to connect JA BizTown concepts to the
    academic areas of Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science.
