0. Introduction
0.1. Purpose of this document
This document is one in a series of ESPS guidelines to module selection that are used by students at
different stages of their studies. They are updated annually, at different times in the academic year.
Section 1 provides a broad orientation to how module selection works, what is required of you, what
decisions you must take, what options you have, etc. (e.g. outlining the areas in which ESPS affiliates
are required to take modules and the areas in which you are free to pursue a course of study similar to
that at your home university, explaining the credit-value of UCL modules). This section will direct you
towards a set of information which is more specific to your chosen pathway through the
degree/academic year. You should read section 1 carefully, and follow the direction you need to take.
Section 2 contains a directory of detailed information that is linked to the guidelines in section 1 (e.g.
in-depth details for all available modules). You are unlikely to need all of this information.
These guidelines should be used in conjunction with ‘ESPS Module Selection Form 4’, on which you
enter your selections before returning the form to the ESPS Office by the deadline stated online.
0.2. Technical guidelines on using this document
This document is designed to be used on a computer. Its structure and format allow you to move
quickly between parts of it that are relevant to your own studies and to bypass a large amount of
information aimed at other students (for example, those following different pathways through the
degree such as a different language). It also allows us to represent the same information in identical or
very similar format in ESPS’s online resources. Nevertheless, we have attempted to design it so that,
if necessary, it can be printed and used in paper format without difficulty. The ESPS Office will not,
however, be providing paper copies to students.
Use the pop-ups that appear over links to help you progress from one part of the module selection
process to the next.
For computer users, this document uses two special technical functions, with which you may not be
familiar in this format: Hyperlinks and Macros.
(i) Hyperlinks: These appear in places where you may need to jump from one section to another,
related one in the same document, or on a webpage.
They operate like links on a webpage, and they appear in a different coloured font from normal text.
The way you will be able to use Hyperlinks depends on your computer’s settings: either with a single-
click, or by pressing CTRL + click.
The contents page also uses Hyperlinks. If you cannot use them, you can still navigate easily between
sections by using the ‘Document Map’ in Microsoft Word: to open this, select View | Document Map.
(ii) Macros: Macros perform functions that help you use a document more efficiently. For example,
many some Macros in ESPS documents help to automatically copy large chunks of information into
forms that you need to submit to the ESPS Office.
On opening the document, a ‘Security Warning’ should ask you whether to ‘Disable Macros’ or ‘Enable
Macros’ (as a pop-up in Word 2003 or earlier, as a message bar in Word 2007). For the most versatile
use of this document, we recommend you ‘Enable Macros’.
ESPS Macros appear in the text as instructions – e.g. ‘Double-click here to copy the information you
need’. If you find that the Macros in this document don’t work, even with Macros enabled, save the
document, close and re-open it, and when the ‘Security Warning’ appears, get help by clicking ‘More
Info’.
Beware: Not all Macros are friendly like ESPS ones! In files that come from untrusted sources, Macros
may contain viruses. Always check your source!

1. Programme Structure
This section explains how the modules you select at UCL should be divided between compulsory
requirements for ESPS affiliates and optional modules in language(s) or humanities/social science
disciplines.
Individual UCL modules have values of either 0.5 units or 1.0 units.
Choosing your „route‟ through the degree
All full-year students take 4.0 units of modules, and all half-year students take 2.0 units of modules,
according to one of the patterns outlined in section 1.0. These patterns are called ‘routes’ through the
degree. The route which you will follow is determined by the length of your stay at UCL and whether or
not you are jointly-affiliated with another department.
The modules you choose should be coherent and build on what you have already taken at your home
university.
Language-related modules, humanities/social science modules, and core ESPS modules are taught in
different departments across UCL. Each department in which you take a module is referred to in UCL
guidelines as a ‘Teaching Department’. The department that admits you to UCL (i.e. ESPS) is referred
to in UCL guidelines as a ‘Parent Department’.
1.0. How to structure your module selections
This section provides an overview of how modules are divided for each of the three routes. You should
firstly familiarise yourself with the requirements of your route before moving on to the next section.
Affiliate full-year route
1.0 unit (recommended) ESPS1001 Introduction to European History, Law, Politics and Philosophy
1.0 – 2.0 units in foreign language acquisition
2.0 – 3.0 units in humanities or social science disciplines
Up to a total of 4.0 units
Affiliate half-year route
2.0 units in humanities or social science disciplines
Affiliate full-year jointly with another department route
2.0 units according to the regulations of your other UCL Parent Department
1.0 unit (recommended) ESPS1001 Introduction to European History, Law, Politics and Philosophy
0.5 – 1.0 units in foreign language acquisition
0.5 – 1.5 units in humanities or social science disciplines
Up to a total of 4.0 units
When choosing modules, it is recommended that you consider selecting several 1.0 unit modules,
rather than selecting only 0.5 unit ones. This will reduce your overall workload to manageable
quantities of classes, weekly reading, coursework and examinations over the course of the year. An
additional practical advantage of this is that the more 1.0 unit modules you select, the less likely you
are to experience timetable clashes. We suggest you select a maximum of four 0.5 unit modules.
1.0.1. Disregard UCL’s general requirements on how to divide your units between Parent and
Teaching Departments
When you arrive at UCL, or in advance of your arrival, you will be told that affiliates are required to
take at least half of their total units in their Parent Department, and up to half in other Teaching
Departments. As an ESPS student, you are officially exempted from this requirement and should
follow ESPS guidelines instead.
3
1.0.2. What to do if ESPS requirements conflict with your home university’s regulations
If ESPS’s requirements conflict with those of your home university in order to complete your degree,
you may choose modules according to your home university’s requirements. It is your responsibility to
ensure that your module selection is approved by your home university. It may therefore be useful to
discuss your choices with a tutor at your home university before coming to London.
1.0.3. UCL unit values and conversion to your home university system
UCL module values translate into the following values that your home university may use to determine
the size of its own modules.
European Credit Transfer
UCL unit value US credit value
Scheme (ECTS) value
0.5 units 7.5 ECTS 4 credits
1.0 units 15 ECTS 8 credits
At UCL you will always be required to register for the full number of UCL units required for full-year
(4.0) or half-year (2.0) affiliates. No exceptions can be made.
1.0.4. Prerequisites for individual modules
Prerequisites are specified next to certain modules. Sometimes, these prerequisites simply list another
UCL module code. You will find all of the modules to which these codes refer in the relevant section of
these guidelines. In such cases, you must either take the prerequisite(s) concurrently this year, or
when submitting your Module Selection Form to ESPS, you must provide evidence that you have
taken a substantively equivalent course at your home university.
1.0.5. Which module codes to select
Each module has a specific code. Usually, module codes appear in the form ‘ABCD1234’. (The letters
designate the Teaching Department, and the numbers designate the level and type of module.)
Some modules in this guide have slightly different codes. Use the following key to determine which
module code to select. You will be given details of specific module content and assessment for the
code you used by the Teaching Department when (or before) you start classes.
Module code
What this code means When to use this code
(example)
ESPS2101 This is a standard UCL module code If no other code is listed for this module

If you are on the Affiliate half-year route
This is a special code for modules taught in (enrolled in Term 1 only), provided the
ESPS2101A Term 1 only, where the content is standard module is not assessed by written exam;
but assessment may be by different means Or if no ‘W’ code is listed and you wish to
take the module during Term 1
If you are on the Affiliate half-year route
This is a special code for modules taught in (enrolled in Term 2 only), provided the
ESPS2101B Term 2 only, where the content is standard module is not assessed by written exam;
but assessment may be by different means Or if no ‘W’ code is listed and you wish to
take the module during Term 2

1.0.6. Module availability
The availability of modules cannot be guaranteed and places are often limited. Some modules are
only available in a specific term; this is indicated in section 2, the Module Directory. For these reasons,
when you complete your Module Selection Form, you will be asked to select at least 2.0 units of
‘reserve’ modules. If ESPS is unable to secure you a place on any of your first choices, we will apply
for the relevant reserve module(s).

2. Module Directory
2.1. Core ESPS module, recommended for all full-year students
In the interest of becoming acquainted with the range of disciplines addressed by the ESPS degree,
full-year Affiliate students are strongly recommended to take the multidisciplinary core ESPS module.

Modules for history specialists fall into two broad categories, distinguished by the module code. Core
modules, introducting broad historical themes or periods (and involving large lectures and smaller
group tutorials), have codes beginning HIST6xxx or SEHI6xxx, or HIST2xxx or SEHI2xxx. Smaller,
seminar-based modules, addressing more specific historical topics or problems, have codes beginning
HIST7xxx or SEHI7xxx.
