What is a Career?
There are many definitions of a Career.
Two good definitions are listed below;
1. Career is a lifestyle concept that involves a sequence of
work (paid or unpaid) or leisure activities in which one
engages throughout a lifetime. Holistically this includes
family, one’s lifestyle and personal vocation which are
intimately connected and integrated into their work and
leisure activities. Careers are unique to each person. A
career is dynamic and unfolds throughout a person’s
lifetime.
Adapted by Catherine Scott from a variety of Career definitions.
2. A career is the sum total of paid and unpaid work,
learning and life roles you undertake throughout your
life.

What is a Career Pathway?
A career pathway consists of the steps you
take within your career. There are multiple
pathways toward any career destination
and yours will be unique to you.
Your career pathway will include navigating
the formal and informal learning, skill
development and life experiences you
undertake through education and training,
community and personal links.

Career and Mission how are they connected to each other?
Travelling on your pathway – making choices
Career and Mission, how are they
connected to each other?
Mission is that grand purpose for which you or your ministry exists. It
includes the context in which you operate and what you do.
Our Career should be in line with our Mission – so we can do that which
we are called to do both collectively as Christians and individually and
personally with the gifts and talents you have been given. i.e. our Career
should be directed by our life purpose or what we could call our ‘Life
Mission’, with God being the CEO (Chief Executive Officer)
Mission and Career are interchangeable words.
Our Career pathway can also be called our Mission journey. This is the
path or journey we take in our lives as our mission/career unfolds and
develops. It includes all of our life experiences as well as both formal and
non-formal learning that creatively shape and mould us and what we do in
our lives.

Travelling on your pathway – making choices
Christ’s calling for all Christians
As Christians we all are required to:
To know, love and serve God with all
your heart, soul, mind and strength. The way
each and everyone of us does this is different
because we are all different, but we all live for the
same underlying purpose: to please, glorify and
honour God.
AND
To love our neighbour as ourselves As
a body of believers we are all called to enable
others to know, love and serve God with all their
hearts, souls, minds and strength
(see Deut. 6:5; Matt. 22:37-39)
…….cond’t
These commands should play an integral part in the way we live
our lives, how we relate to others and what we do. Our Career and
Mission should be based on these callings. Only with Christ as
number one in your life will you come even close to living out the
custom-tailored plan that God has for you.
God’s unique design for my life
Once you know and understand God’s call for all Christians, you
then need to work out in what context that will be for you – in other
words how these things will be lived out during the course of your
Mission journey/Career pathway.
“Every single person born in this universe is unique. You don’t
have to try and be somebody, for in Christ you ARE somebody – a
unique creation of God with a particular life-message that no other
being in the whole universe can quite duplicate. God has a custom-
tailored plan for each individual life, and he is working with each
one of us personally to perfect this plan and bring it to completion.”
(Selwyn Hughes notes from The Every day Devotional Bible NIV)
….cond’t
To seek God’s will and Mission for your life you need to:
have a personal relationship with Jesus
read scriptures
pray
seek counsel from God and others who have your best interests in mind
check out whether what you want to do excites and challenges you
use your God given gifts & talents
draw on your experiences (often our experiences are a vital part of the preparation to get you ready to do
God’s will).
When these are all in place you can be confident that you are more likely to make good choices as you fulfil
your individual career pathway/mission journey. The result will be a more effective ministry and a general
sense of peace, purpose and fulfilment in your life, despite the trials and tribulations you will meet along the
way!
"The longer I live, the more I believe that one of the most profound subjects in the Christian life is
the will of God. The deeper we dig into it, the more we realize how little we know. . . Doing the will of God is
rarely easy and uncomplicated. Instead, it is often difficult and convoluted. It is mysterious. . . . In fact, more
often than not, God's will is downright humanly illogical." – (Charles Swindoll in The Mystery of God's Will:
What Does He Want for Me?)
Discerning God’s will for our lives takes time and God being the mysterious God he is, means that sometimes
we need to use all our resources to make a decision and then take a leap in pure faith and perfect trust!!

Travelling on your pathway – making choices
Travelling on your pathway – making choices
We are all on a Career pathway/Mission journey– but where to?
Some of us let the tide take us on our journey, leaving us feeling unfulfilled and living life
without much meaning or purpose.
Some of us choose to make good choices in our lives that move us forward positively along a
pathway that is meaningful and purposeful. The result usually is greater personal satisfaction
and fulfilment.
Where are you going now? Are you on the right path?
Whatever your situation it doesn’t hurt to regularly take time out to dream a little, seek some
vision and think about your current pathway. Look at what other opportunities may now be
available to you, seek advice and make choices and plans that will create positive steps
towards developing a meaningful career/life mission.
Remember, little steps forward may be more valuable than you realise. As Archie Roach says
“from little things big things grow.”

Our Mission Journey and being a Missionary
I believe we are all missionaries, regardless of where we live and what we do in our day to day
lives, we all have our very own individual Mission journey.
We are all called to step out of our comfort zone, relate to those who are different to us and
share the word of Christ. As Christians we should be different but we should also be able to be
loving, gracious and challenging in our relationships with others outside of our Christian
Circles. It is easy to love those who love us but much harder to love those who don’t!
In our world of consumerism and materialism there are many people living empty and hollow
lives, trying to fill their needs with materials, relationships, pain sedatives and the like,
regardless of salary package or background. All of us have a responsibility to reach out to
them as well as the overtly poor and outcasts. Everyone needs to know Christ – he is the one
true God who will never ever leave us.
Indeed we are all called to serve and share the gospel. We are Missionaries wherever we are!
Therefore we will love and care for others and promote social justice and reconciliation as a
natural response to our deepening relationship with Christ.

Becoming a Missionary away from home and
your home culture
Becoming a ‘Missionary’ away from your home and your home culture is a calling
for only some people.
Take these steps to help discover if He is calling you….
•Read everything about missions and missionaries that you can get your hands on.
•Get involved in the missions mobilization and education programs of your local church
•Go and hear every missionary speaker that you can. God sometimes chooses that time to clarify His calling
to young people.
•Talk to your church leaders and those who know you well
•Throw yourself into active ministry through your local church. Learn to minister effectively in your own
culture before you attempt cross-cultural ministry.
•Go on a short-term missions trip. A cross-cultural mission trip will give you a taste of life on the mission
field and a good opportunity to sense God's leadership.
•Contact a missionary sending agency.
•Consider giving a year of volunteer service overseas before deciding whether you should offer the rest of
your life.
•Persevere till it becomes clear to you whether this is what Christ wants you to do.

evidence of commitment, loyalty and a strong desire to
contribute to the success of society, all of which volunteering
demonstrates. It also aids personal growth and the development
of transferable skills."
