SOUTH ORANGE COUNTY WASTEWATER AUTHORITY
Under the direction of the Shift Supervisor; assist in the operation and maintenance of the SOCWA Treatment Plants while
developing further knowledge in the practices and procedures of wastewater treatment.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
Assist in routine plant operation and maintenance activities. Learn the practices, procedures, safety practices,
techniques, regulations and laws relating to wastewater treatment by participating in on-the-job training.
Remove screenings and grit; clean primary, secondary and other wastewater treatment equipment and facilities. Perform
general housekeeping tasks and building maintenance within the plant.
Under direction, operate, maintain and inspect all treatment process equipment; perform/assist in repairs; report faulty
May perform such record keeping functions as logging plant operations, test results, maintenance work performed and
unusual operating conditions.
Operate various hand and power tools and test instruments.
Elementary knowledge of the following is required: Operation of a secondary treatment plant, anaerobic solids treatment,
chemical handling and process control; equipment used to perform limited repairs to mechanical equipment.
A general knowledge of the following is required: Types of equipment used in wastewater treatment process such as pumps,
motors, engines, meters, blowers and compressors; safety practices and procedures as they apply to wastewater treatment
facilities, mechanical equipment, chemical handling, gas management systems; basic arithmetic, reading and writing; the
ability to investigate and compile information and present it in an organized written form.
An OIT must obtain a California Operator-in-Training Wastewater Treatment Certificate. An Operator I, must have
possession of a valid Grade I certificate issued by the State Water Resources Control Board.
Graduation from high school or an acceptable equivalent. Must posses a valid California, Class C, driver's license in good
standing. Must be able to pass Agency's pre-employment physical examination and drug testing. Must be able to obtain a
positive seal when using self-contained breathing apparatus.
This position requires strenuous physical activities including, but not limited to, walking, bending, reaching, climbing and
moving and lifting of heavy objects in excess of 50 pounds; may require exposure to inclement weather conditions, working in
wet and/or odorous areas, working in tanks and/or confined spaces; position is subject to 24 hour recall, variable working
hours, overtime, weekends and holidays; may be required to perform stand-by duties and respond to plant emergencies.
SALARY RANGE: Operator-in-Training - $3,840 – 4,900/per month
Grade I - $4,233 – 5.403/ per month
