Christoph writes his uncle to say a “madman” has moved into the upstairs rooms of his house. Christoph’s uncle says Beethoven is peculiar, not mad. Children laugh as they see Beethoven in the window naked, looking at a sheet of music. Beethoven’s visitors have to write in a book to communicate with him because he is deaf. Beethoven fires his housekeeper for using a sheet of his music to stuff his boots. Beethoven works on his 9th symphony and hears music in his head. Beethoven gets a new housekeeper from France. Christoph is old enough to go to the river alone to think. Christoph sees Beethoven’s messy apartment with writing all over the walls. The prince comes to visit Beethoven, but does not disturb him because he is composing music. Vienna loves music. There’s music everywhere. An organ grinder is singing. There are dancers in the streets. A music student can be heard playing. The streets are alive with activity. Beethoven’s father sometimes made him practise all night long. Beethoven has bells and ear trumpets to help him hear. A famous show in Vienna has a dog as its star. Beethoven uses pianos without legs so he can feel the vibrations in the floor. Beethoven has a metronome made. Beethoven believes music can change the world. Christoph goes for a walk with Beethoven in the country. A storm comes up and they watch it building and approaching. Beethoven leaves for the summer. Beethoven returns. The sopranos sing at the party. Beethoven’s music makes people cry because it is so beautiful, but Beethoven is rude to his patrons. Perhaps Beethoven’s deafness explains his frustration and rudeness. Musicians complain because the music is so difficult. Christoph and his mother receive tickets to Beethoven’s concert. Beethoven’s moods are fierce before the concert. Christoph accidentally messes up Beethoven’s sheets of music. Beethoven conducts his new symphony and it is a huge success. To think he heard this in his head! Beethoven has moved from Christoph’s house. Christoph names his dog Metronome because of his wagging tail. Christoph goes to the river to think about Beethoven after his death. He thinks about how Beethoven wanted to change the world with music.
