Kit Carson, Phoebe Hearst Join Forces for
Student Debaters                                                                           CENTRAL
Twenty-two students from Kit Carson Middle School and Phoebe Hearst Elementary have joined
forces to form the new Kit Carson Pioneer Speech and Debate Club. Coached by Erik
Knudson, students meet together at Kit Carson twice a week to prepare for competition in
upcoming area speech and debate tournaments. Through participation in speech and debate,
students learn to be critical thinkers, effective communicators and empowered participants in

With dozens of unique campuses and programs offering a wide range of educational experiences, there is a Sacramento City Unified School
District school that is right for you! The months of January and February are great times to visit a campus and see first-hand the great work
of our principals, teachers and staff.

Additionally, SCUSD is an "open enrollment district," meaning that students who reside permanently within the boundaries of the district have
the opportunity to apply for enrollment in participating elementary, K-8, middle or high schools within the district, based on space availability
for the 2011-12 school year. To participate, parents or guardians must complete an application. This open-enrollment application period
begins online on Monday, February 14, at 8 a.m. Those who prefer to apply in person may receive walk-in assistance at the Serna Center,

Although all schools welcome visitors, some have special tour/visitation dates:

Bret Harte, 2751 Ninth Ave.: Kinder Visitation Day is scheduled for Thursday, February 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

William Land, 2120 12th St.: The school is hosting kinder tours for open enrollment this week from 9:15 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Phoebe Hearst, 1410 60th St.: Campus tours for prospective families begin and continue every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to
10 a.m. through February 9. No appointment needed. Also, prospective parents should check out the school's website @ for more detailed information on the criteria to be entered into the lottery for the school's BASIC

David Lubin, 3535 M St.: Tours of the campus will held at 9:30 a.m. on the following days:                 Friday, January 28; Tuesday,
February 8; and Friday, February 18. Parents should sign-in at the office.

Oak Ridge, 4501 Martin Luther King Blvd.: A Parent Visitation Day is scheduled for Monday, February 7, from 8 a.m. to
noon. Parents interested in touring the school should call the site at 277-6679 to schedule a visit.

Hollywood Park, 4915 Harte Way: All interested parents are welcome to call the school at 277-6290 to arrange a
"personalized" visit.

Camellia Basic, 6600 Cougar Drive: Visitation days for open enrollment are scheduled each Thursday morning from 8 a.m.
to 12 p.m. through February 11.

Matsuyama, 7680 Windbridge Drive: A Parent Day is scheduled for Wednesday, February 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. The
day will begin with a principal orientation and include classroom visits and time for questions.

Edward Kemble, 7495 29th St.: The school is offering two dates for parents to see the Dual Immersion program: Thursday,
February 2 at 9:30 a.m. and Tuesday, March 1 at 9:30 a.m.

Alice Birney, 6251 13 St.: Parent visits are scheduled for Wednesday, February 16 at 8 a.m., and Wednesday, March 16 at 8
a.m. The school is also hosting a curriculum information night called A Walk Through the Grades on Wednesday, January 26, at 6 p.m. All
