AIDS SCULPTURE ON HAND AS FABULOUS CANADIAN ART AUCTIONED
TO RAISE FUNDS FOR HIV/AIDS CARE
October 31, 2006- (Toronto, ON) Casey House Foundation will host its 13th annual Art with
Heart event on Wednesday, November 1st, 2006. One of Canada’s premier art auctions, Art
with Heart will feature the work of established and emerging contemporary Canadian artists.
This year’s event will be held once again at the historic Carlu and the auction will be conducted
by Ritchies Auctioneers and Appraisers. The event will raise money for programs at Casey
House Hospice, one of the world’s first hospices for people affected by HIV/AIDS.
The AIDS sculpture, which was displayed outside the Royal Ontario Museum during the recent
XVI International AIDS Conference, will be on display during Art with Heart. The six-foot
lacquered metal sculpture was created in 1989 by AA Bronson, Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal of
General Idea at a time when few artworks dealt specifically with AIDS. AA Bronson’s work has
been featured in past Art with Heart auctions, including a limited edition print. Casey House is
honoured to be hosting the famous sculpture while it searches for a permanent home.
This year’s auction will feature 90 pieces from such artists as: Douglas Coupland, David Bierk,
Joseph Drapell, Edward Burtynsky and James Lahey. The catalogue includes an Emerging
Artists collection, presented by TD Waterhouse, which features ten works from up and coming
artists. Internationally respected artist Barbara Astman generously provided the 2006 Gallery
of Patron’s Limited Edition piece. Presented by Concord CityPlace, 60 framed prints of Art with
Heart Red, from Astman’s acclaimed Red Series of 1981, will be available for $750 apiece.
Astman is one of Canada's leading international artists, and has recently won a large public art
commission that will grace an 80 meter expanse along Bay Street.
While the 2005 auction raised $350,000, it is hoped that this year’s event will exceed that
number and once again bring in well over the estimated value of the collection. This year’s
stunning collection is available for viewing at www.artwithheart.ca
“The collection offered at Art with Heart this year is simply outstanding- that begins with the
important multiple created for us by international artist Barbara Astman. This work offers an
excellent entry point for new collectors who can start their collection with an important work of
art,” says Karen Mills, Art with Heart Co-Chair. “My co-chairs and I worked diligently with the
curatorial board through the past year to bring new and high quality offerings to the sale. It
has been a pleasure to devote time to such a wonderful cause and to support the work started
by our beloved June Callwood.”
In honour of Vespa’s 60th anniversary, a Vespa LX50, adorned with a moose motif by Charles
Pachter, one of Canada’s leading contemporary artists, will be up for auction as part of this
year’s collection. The Moosemobile, signed by the artist, is a whimsical must-have that
celebrates Canadian culture.
