First, let us review what
main ideas and supporting
details are. We must know
these terms to understand
what we are being asked
to do.
             Main Idea

• The main idea tells you what the story or
  paragraph is about.
• The main idea may be the lesson learned
  or moral of a story.
• The main idea is the most important part

Next, let us review what
primary and secondary
sources are from last month
because those terms could
come in handy again as we
answer this question.
A primary source is …
         an original document having
to do with an event or subject
         of inquiry; a firsthand or
         eyewitness account of an
         event, usually written near
         the time of the event

              autobiographies
                and diaries
               are examples
A secondary source is …
         any document that describes
         an event, person, place, or
         thing, usually they are created
         at a later date

This prompt has TWO
parts to complete. Let’s
look at something in
this question that might
have caused you
problems.
Of Kathryn’s sources she can choose
from, which ones are primary and
which ones are secondary? On the
next slide, we will arrange them into
columns of similar sources. There will
be a middle column for “uncertain”
sources because we don’t have
enough information yet to determine
whether they are primary or
secondary.

Kathryn is doing a research paper on leaders of the
American Civil War. She must choose appropriate sources
in order to write a paper that has plenty of supporting
details. A list of sources is shown:
       diaries from civil war generals
letters from Civil War generals to their wives
       a history textbook
maps showing major Civil War battles
newspaper articles about the progression of the Civil War
       photographs of Civil War battles
Choose from the list two sources that Kathryn could use
to find supporting details for her project.
Then, in your Answer Document, explain why those two
sources would be appropriate to use for her project.
The

Two sources that Kathryn should use if she need to have
supporting details on a leader of the civil war she should chose,
diaries from Civil War generals, and history textbook . The
reason that she should chose these source are because, a
general would be a leader and the diaries of them would give a
lot of details, and then a text book would help her find what
leader/ general to chose and some information about them.
