The Honorable
United States House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Representative:

I am a practicing pediatric gastroenterologist in (name of town). Many of our young
patients suffer from Crohn’s Disease or ulcerative colitis, chronic diseases commonly
referred to as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). (Briefly describe your practice, i.e.
private office, children’s hospital, etc. and the IBD patients you see).

I am very concerned that physicians and patients do not have enough information about
IBD. More basic research is needed and families and their primary care physicians need
to be more aware of the signs and symptoms in IBD in children. That is why I am very
pleased to see that you have become a cosponsor of H.R. 1113, the Inflammatory Bowel
Disease Research Enhancement Act. As noted in the preamble to the bill, more than one
million people in this country suffer from inflammatory bowel disease. Thirty percent of
these individuals are diagnosed as children.

I appreciate your careful consideration of this important legislation and thank you for
joining your other colleagues who have also become cosponsors.
