This qualitative research project has focused on how services can reach out, improve access and make a difference for people with serious mental health problems and complex needs. The primary focus was on the perceptions and needs of people using services and those avoiding them. Participants included people using specialist NHS assertive outreach services, voluntary sector outreach services and people who had gone out of contact with specialist mental health services. The study also involved carers/supporters and staff. The work included a focus on people from black and minority ethnic groups including Gypsies and Travellers. There is a separate summary report on the work done with Gypsies and Travellers. The full title of the main report is:
