Tuesday 4th January 2011
Dear Parents, Carers and Children in Year 5 & 6
Following the success of last half term’s SPELLING BEE’ competition, I am enclosing the next 100
words for next half term. Once again, we will have a Year 5 and Year 6 winner from each of our
Upper Key Stage 2 classes who will receive a prize and a pin badge to wear for the next half term.
The class winners will then face each other in a Champion-of-Champions competition. The 2
overall winners will then be presented with the trophy to look after for the next half term.
I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that a Spelling Bee is an oral competition
where the entrant is given a word to spell out loud and it’s meaning to help them. It will operate
on a last-man-standing format where the children will be called up in random order and will
continue to be called up as long as they get the spellings correct. The purpose behind this is above
all else is to have a FUN competition! Of course it is also to raise our aspirations and enthusiasm
for spelling, add to our vocabulary that we can use in our writing as well as meeting the needs of
all the children in UKS2.
Below are the next 100 words both year groups will be given to practice over the coming weeks. It
is completely up to you how practice, just bear in mind that you will only be tested out loud and
will not be allowed writing implements to help. These words are in addition to the weekly lists we
are learning and we will continue to do this each week as before.
The class Spelling Bee will be held on Tuesday 1st February (due to Year 6 Residential) and the
Champion-of-Champions Bee will be on Tuesday 15th February 2011. These winners will not be
given a list to revise from; they will be given random words from a different list at approximately
the same level of difficulty.
I am really looking forward to the next level of this challenge, maybe with some new winners! As
ever, if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind Regards
Mrs B Turford
