Cane Molasses TYPICAL ANALYSIS (Dry Matter Basis except DM) Dry Matter 75 % Crude Protein 6.5 % Oil Trace NDF Nil Starch Trace Sugar 64 % ME 12.7 MJ/kg DM Density 156 Gallons (708 litres) per tonne PRODUCT DETAIL • High energy in a rapidly available form • Provides high level of Sucrose sugar • Helps improve diet palatability • Helps to promote high dry matter intakes • Highly digestible and contributes to rumen fermentation • Very viscous • Can prove difficult to handle in cold conditions PRODUCT BACKGROUND Cane Molasses is a dark brown, viscous liquid produced as a co-product of the production of sugar from the sugar cane plant. After dissolving sugars out of the fibrous cane at high temperature, the crystals of sugar settle out as the liquid cools leaving the Cane Molasses, sometimes called “Black Strap”, behind. HANDLING AND STORAGE As with other molasses products, Cane Molasses is delivered in bulk liquid tankers with discounts available for 15, 20 and 25 tonne lots. Tanks should be built to hold and dispatch bulk liquids and care should be taken to ensure they are cleaned out from time to time to ensure no build up of sediment. 4 inch diameter pipework, or the metric equivalent, is adequate to handle Cane Molasses. In cold weather, Cane Molasses can flow very slowly and this should be taken into consideration when choosing the product. FEEDING Cane Molasses is suitable for inclusion in the diets of all ruminant livestock and can offer a very effective way to increase the palatability of feeds whilst contributing high levels of energy from sugars. Dairy Cows Ideal for complete diets at up to 3kg per head per day. Normal feed rates between 1 and 2 kg. Beef Up to 10 % can be included in beef diets depending on the nature of other feeds in the mix and subsequent storage facilities for the finished ration. Youngstock As with beef cattle, up to 10 % of Cane Molasses can be safely included in youngstock diets from four weeks of age. Sheep Cane Molasses can be used at up to 10 % of dry sheep diets but is generally not suited to feeding in ball feeders because of its high viscosity. AVAILABILITY Imported into most molasses terminals throughout the UK, Cane Molasses is readily available to all areas all year around. Note: Cane Molasses should only be used in diets where recommended by a suitably qualified person. Furthermore, as feeding is only one part of overall animal influence, no performance guarantees can be made.
