Rugby Union
Last Friday our girls met Singleton in the final round of 16 schools in Tamworth. It was
always going to be a hard game as our girls were missing some key players and had a
number of forfeits which robbed them of vital match practice and it showed. The first
half was full of penalties (mostly against us) and poor field position. At half time the
score was 17-0 against us but we always knew we were still in the game. The second
half was much better with our girls scoring two tries by Kearni Churchland and Alaura
Rasoqosoqo and one conversion by Laura Faint. Before Singleton scored late to close
out the game 24-12. Best for us were Lucinda Rose, Amie Clarke, Kellie Pinkerton and
Laitoya Dawson. Special mention to Sarah Bussell and Stacey Duff who played their first
open’s game from Year 8 and Laura Faint who has played her last, Laura has played
every Girl’s Rugby Game since Year 7 and has been a great leader in female sport.

Under 16’s Rugby League through to State Final in Small Schools Knockout
Warialda High School Under 16’s Rugby League team travelled to Coonabarabran on
Tuesday to play Oberon/Coonabarabran combined side in the State Small Schools Semi-
Final.
After an early start to the day, the boys arrived and were keen from the outset. The first
try was a beautifully constructed piece of play, Ryan Stevens put a delicate kick over the
top of the opposing team, a beautiful bounce and Brendan Hall was in under the posts.
Ben Kennedy nailed the conversion to give the Warialda boys a 6-0 lead. Warialda then
kept turning over possession until a great ball from Brett Carroll to Justin Power who
strolled over for Warialda’s second, Ben Kennedy converted for a 12-0 lead. After the
kick off Warialda were awarded a penalty which led to another try outwide to Nenus
Yako after a fabulous cut out ball by Ben Kennedy. The conversion was unsuccessful to
make the half time score 16-0.
Warialda started the second half with the same aggression and a barnstorming run from
Ben Kennedy who scored under the posts gave Warialda a commanding lead. Ben also
converted his try to make the score 22-0. A bit of drop ball lead to a heavy defensive
few minutes, until eventually Warialda out powered their opposition and scored again
through Justin Power, conversion was waved away to make the score 26-0. Oberon
eventually cracked Warialda’s defence to make the score 32-6. Captain Ben Kennedy
then put the icing on the cake running a great line to score next to the posts to seal the
game. Warialda leading 32-6. Oberon were on an attacking raid when a whistle went,
the Warialda boys thought it was the referee as the Warialda boys let the attacker go,
who ran through to score under the posts, only to know it was the time officials on the
sideline signalling full-time. The conversion was waved away and the final score stood at
Warialda 32 – Oberon 10.
Next the boys will play McAuley Central School at Dubbo next Wednesday.
The players would like to thank Pete & Jake Kennedy for running the water, Pete
Stevens for coaching and Ms Pitt for taking us to Coonabarabran.
Can’t wait for next week, to bring back the State title !!!!!!

Music Notes

This term is going to be a very hectic one for the Music Department. Already this term
Gabrielle Hunt has performed in Inverell at a concert of all Wendy Champion’s students.
Of the ninety students Wendy teaches Gabrielle is the most advanced. Gabrielle
performed exceptionally and is to be commended on her effort as she was very sick in
the week leading up to the concert but was determined to perform despite the setbacks.

Ben Nelson has been chosen to perform a solo item at the Inverell Arts on Display
Festival. He will play guitar and sing “I’m Yours” at the Inverell Town Hall on Friday 21st
August. We are very proud of Ben and wish him all the best for his performance.

Students throughout the Gwydir Learning Region are busily rehearsing for the annual
cultural evening formerly known as “Nibbles, Scribbles and Notes” which will be held at
Warialda High School this year on 11th September. This year’s event will be different
from previous years, but there will be a few familiar features such as attractive art
works, magnificent music and fascinating food! Dashing Dan Gilmour will again be the
MC and Martin Hansford has agreed to again provide his expertise in the area of sound
and lighting. Tickets will only be available at the door, but everyone wanting to attend
needs to ring the office at Warialda High School so those catering have an exact idea of
the number of people attending.

Di Hall the Regional Music Consultant will be at WHS on 10th September. She will be
polishing the music items for the concert on 11th and helping with preparations for the
HSC music performance exam and vivas which will be in the week commencing 21st
September

Gwydir Band rehearsals will be held every Monday afternoon this term as well as
Thursday afternoon 10th September at 3.15pm. Di Hall will also be attending this extra
rehearsal as well as a Combined Gwydir Band/ Training Band rehearsal where all
students who are part of the music program will get together during Thursday in
preparation for Friday’s concert.

Bingara Central School’s Variety Night will be held on Monday 28th September. The
Gwydir Concert Band will be performing at this event.

As you can see this will be a very busy, but also very exciting term when the students of
the Gwydir Learning Region can showcase their skill and talent.

The SIEMENS Experience for Year 9 students

INTERESTED IN SCIENCE, ENGINEERING OR
TECHNOLOGY?
Any Year 9 student with an interest in science,
engineering or technology is welcome to attend The
Siemens Science Experience, a three-day hands-on
science program.

A program will be conducted in all 36 Australian universities and tertiary institutions
between now and January 2010 for students who will be entering Year 10 in 2010.
Each program includes a wide variety of practical activities and presentations by leading
scientists and engineers.

The cost of the three-day program is $105 depending on the institution and includes
three days of hands-on fun, food and friendship. All you need is transport to the
venue of your choice and/or accommodation. You may decide to seek financial
sponsorship from a rotary club or another sponsor to meet the above registration fee.
Also, the Science faculty has received a donation from the County of Burnett branch of
the Country Women Association towards the sponsorship of a male and a female
student to a Siemens workshop.

Further information and application forms are available from the school’s Science
teachers, Rotary clubs and also from the website www.scienceexperience.com.au
