Begin Again at Bethlehem - 3. His home is here in Nazareth,
                                        He doesn't want to travel:
Lyrics Gets out of breath!
All he really wants to do
No 1. Visions and Dreams Is hammer and saw and nail and glue.

1. The scene is set in Palestine 4. First there's Joseph,
Two thousand years ago, Just a carpenter,
Times were rather troubled then He's a simple man
As our story's sure to show Doing what he can.

Chorus
But there were stars to be seen, No 3. Mary, Mary, Mary
And there were visions and dreams,
And there was magic in the air: Chorus
People sensed a new beginning, Mary, Mary, Mary,
An end to all despair There's a buzz in the air,
                                        And shortly you'll discover
2. The Romans were the rulers then, That you're rarer than rare.
And all roads lead to Rome. Even though you have not yet
They thought their day job wasn’t bad Become Joseph's wife,
But they longed to get back home Something's going to happen
Which will change your whole life.
Chorus……
                                        1. *And an angel came to Mary
3. In Nazareth there lived a man With glad tidings of great joy,
And Joseph was his name: That she was going to have a child,
He was skilled in carpentry A son a little boy.
But a man of no great fame.
                                        Chorus…….
Chorus……
                                        2. Poor Joseph was bewildered,
                                        And rather worried too:
No 2. Joseph’s Song His position in society,
His plans might all fall through.
(A solo part may be created by
substituting ‘I’ for ‘First’ Chorus…..
and ‘me’ for ‘him, etc)
                                        * A solo part may be created by
1. First there's Joseph, substituting 'see me' for 'Mary’
Just a carpenter, and 'I' for 'she,' etc
He's a simple man
Doing what he can.

2. Give him wood to cut,
Give him light to see,
Give him air to breathe,
Treat him honestly.

No 4. Caesar Augustus
1. Caesar Augustus was a very powerful man, 2. I've been in my bedroom
But he had a problem For forty nights and days,
Which he could not understand. Searched the Roman Empire-net,
He needed some money for a new chariot, With my mind a complete daze.
But the Cash Machine said money Finally I've solved it - Am I dead cool, or what?
Was a thing he had not got! 'Cos I've found a way to let me pay
                                                      For that wicked chariot!'
Chorus
Caesar Augustus, you're a wonderful guy, Chorus…..
And that chariot's the best that any money can
buy.
So get your brain a going and let us see it tick. 3. ‘This is what I'll do now,
There's bound to be an answer. Here's my little plan.
You'd better get it quick! I'll invent new taxes; tax every woman and man!
                                                      And just to be unhelpful,
2. He sat in his bedroom for forty nights and days, In my bureaucratic way:
Searched the Roman Empire-net, If you live in one town,
With his mind a complete daze. In another you'll have to pay!’
Finally he shouted, ‘Am I dead cool, or what?'
'Cos I've found a way to let me pay Chorus…..
For that wicked chariot!'

Chorus…..

3. ‘This is what I'll do now,
Here's my little plan.
                                                      No 5. Riding to Bethlehem
I'll invent new taxes; tax every woman and man!
                                                      1. Mary and Joseph went to Bethlehem,
And just to be unhelpful,
                                                      Riding on a donkey,
In my bureaucratic way:
                                                      Just the two of them.
If you live in one town,
In another you'll have to pay!’
                                                      Chorus
                                                      Riding to Bethlehem,
Chorus…..
                                                      Riding to Bethlehem,
                                                      Riding by night and day,
No 4. Caesar Augustus Nobody to help them.
Optional soloist version: 2. The journey was tiring, they had no sleep at all.
                                                      Finally they got there,
1. I'm Caesar Augustus, Reached the city wall.
I'm a very powerful man,
But I have a problem which I cannot understand. Chorus…..
I need lots of money for a new chariot,
But the Cash Machine says money
Is a thing I have not got!

Chorus…..
                                                                                                         41
No 6. No Room at the Inn No 8. Ten Wise Men

1. No room at the inn, 1. Ten wise men, riding on a camel,
All the places were taken. Ten wise men, solemn and divine,
Mary and Joseph were shown the street, Ten wise men, riding on a camel
The only place that was vacant. One stopped for sandwiches and then there were
                                                       nine!
2. No room at the inn,
Tired, weary and dismal. 2. Nine wise men, riding on a camel,
Then they discovered a place to sleep, Nine wise men, sitting very straight,
On the hay and the straw in a stable. Nine wise men, riding on a camel,
One fell right off the end and then there were
No 7. Rent-a-Camel eight!

1. The Eastern* branch of Rent-a-Camel was a 3. Eight wise men, riding on a camel,
very busy firm. Eight wise men, going to Bethlehem,
One day to their offices came TEN wise men! Eight wise men, riding on a camel,
**‘We’ve seen a star,’ the first one said, One stopped to blow his nose and then there were
‘In the sky,’ the second one added, seven!
‘We’d like to hire ten camels, please, with seats
that are well padded!’ 4. Seven wise men, riding on a camel,
Seven wise men, riding through the sticks,
Seven wise men, riding on a camel,
2. The girl behind the desk replied, One stopped to see his Auntie,
‘I’m very sorry sir, Then there were six!
All our camels are away, except that one in there.’
‘We’ll take it,’ said the first wise man, 5. Six wise men, riding on a camel,
‘I’m sure that it will do; Six wise men, eager to arrive,
It’s large enough for all of us and all our luggage Six wise men, riding on a camel,
too!’ One couldn’t stay the pace so then there were five

                                                       6. Five wise men, riding on a camel,

One got off to have a sleep and then there were

No 9. Herod! No 11. Baby Jesus
1. Herod the king was a dangerous man, Baby Jesus,
Dangerous in the extreme, Warm in your cattle stall,
When he saw the three wise men, In the silence of night,
With envy he turned green! So still, so small,
* ‘Show me!’ he said, Baby Jesus, Baby Jesus,
‘Show me!’ he said, Jesus
‘Show me this “King” of the Jews’
‘Show me!’ he said,
‘Show me!’ he said, No 12. Finale
‘I’ll go and worship too.’
                                                  1. This was the story then, the start of it all,
2. ‘I’m the rightful king round here, There in a stable, a manger, a stall.
There can’t be any more, A star in the sky, very still, very high,
I’ve had to deal with upstarts And a world which lay sleeping, unaware of it all:
Like this so-called “king” before!’
‘Show me!’ he said, Chorus
‘Show me!’ he said, Of Mary, Of Joseph,
‘Show me this “King” of the Jews’ Of wise men and their travellings
‘Show me!’ he said, Of camels, of shepherds,
‘Show me!’ he said, Of angels, and kings.
‘I’ll go and worship too.’
                                                  2. Greatest of wonders, the joy of new birth
*Any of the lines within inverted commas may be Wonder that’s shared right across our whole earth,
sung by a soloist. A joy to inspire us, a joy to enthral,
A joy that is timeless and that speaks to us all.

No 10. Shepherds Chorus
                                                  Of Mary, Of Joseph,
1. Shepherds on the hillside also saw the star, Of wise men and their travellings
Made their way to the stable, Of camels, of shepherds,
Came from near and far. Of angels, and kings.
When they reached the manger
They couldn’t believe their eyes: 3. Every baby brings hope to our troubled world,
Lying there with his mother Brings new hope to the world,
Was Jesus Christ. Brings new hope to the world,
Brings new hope to the world,
2. Some people say there were angels To the world.
Watching them all night through
While outside the star was shining
Shining bright and true.
Gently they knelt beside him,
The shepherds and three wise men,
Found gifts for the child in the stable
In Bethlehem
