Sign in at reception desk, specify the advisor you want to meet with (if you wish), and take a seat. If you have any paperwork to complete, finish it up before seeing an advisor. The receptionist will pull your file for you, and call you when an advisor is available. Advisor Codes: 4 digit code needed to enroll in classes; the code changes each semester. If you are abroad or not on-campus, we can release your Advisor Code via email. Contact an advisor a few weeks before your TeleBears time for the procedures. If you are going abroad next semester through a non-EAP program, you still need an Advisor Code in order to cancel your registration If you change the courses they sign up for, they MUST get approval for the new courses from an advisor Interdisciplinary (you have a lot of choice in the courses you take) No more than 3 classes from same department except for: PEIS – they can take five Econ classes which includes Econ 100A/B; and PACS -- they can take as many PACS classes as they want. Central Theme, also known as emphasis, concentration or area courses Foreign Language Requirement the same for all majors [refer to handout] Four college-level semesters or the equivalent o Equivalents include AP scores of 5, placement tests, study abroad language grammar courses; 3 years high school = 1 year college, 4 years high school = about 1.5 years college; non-native English speakers must still provide documentation of their ability through proficiency test, faculty certification or documentation that they were educated in the native language through high school; 1 semester course taken abroad in a foreign language can count as three semesters of the language requirement If taking classes, fourth class must be for a letter grade (first three classes can be taken P/NP) If going abroad and taking classes in that country’s language, you can receive credit for completing the entire foreign language requirement. Be sure to bring back proof that you took a course taught in the foreign language, such as a paper or syllabus. Must be a modern non-English language (no Latin or American Sign Language). 3 Upper Division Non-UCB courses are Transferable (such as Cal State University and Study Abroad courses) Bring course description, syllabus, transcript and one project (paper or exam) to staff advisor for approval for PEIS and DS, take materials to faculty chair for LAS, MES and PACS Language courses taken elsewhere are transferable, no limit (upper and lower division) Lower division courses taken at community colleges are transferable up to 70 total units Non-L&S Courses Taken at Cal Courses not in the College of L&S that are listed in our major handbooks are considered L&S courses and do not require special approval to take more than three (CRP 112A, BA 107, EEP 151, ESPM 165) Courses not in the College of L&S that are NOT listed in our major handbooks require special approval UCDC courses are considered on-campus L&S courses, and the 10.5 units are counted as part of your major GPA This combines with just-mentioned requirement such that a total of three upper division classes can be taken outside of L&S, including Community College, EAP and BA/CRP/EEP/ESPM/etc. courses not listed in the major handbooks.

Grading (all courses for major must be taken for a letter grade) Major GPA calculations include only courses taken at Cal, including UCDC and regular UCB courses taken through Extension. Courses taken at community colleges or abroad, even through EAP, are not included in major GPAs. This is important because Honors eligibility is based on major GPA. DARS does not calculate GPAs in the same way as IAS does (they omit Extension grades), so do not go by the DARS major GPA when determining your honors eligibility. DARS You should request a DARS (Degree Audit Report System) each semester to check your progress towards your major. Request it a couple weeks before your TeleBears time so that if you see a problem relating to your major requirements, you can bring it to an advisor with your hand-written corrections when you come in for your Advisor Code. You can also hand-write your corrections on the DARS report and drop it in our DARS mailbox. If you see a problem relating to your college requirements, see an advisor in Campbell Hall. Even if your DARS is incorrect, you can still graduate on time IF your student file in the IAS office is correct. This is another reason you should check your progress with an advisor at least once a semester. DARS calculates your major GPA differently than IAS does. DARS does not include Extension grades but IAS does. Be aware of this if you are calculating your major GPA for honors eligibility. Minimum Class Units: All courses must be taken for 3 or 4 units; sometimes an exception will be made for a 2 unit class Unit Maximums: Single majors starting their 9th semester must not be over 130 units; double majors starting their 10th semester must not be over 136 units Double Majors and Simultaneous Degrees: Two classes can overlap between majors; extra paperwork is involved to coordinate coursework between two departments so allow yourself plenty of time Minors: One class can overlap between a major and a minor

Degree List Graduating Seniors put themselves on the degree list during their last TeleBears time or via petition if after the fifth week Commencement Commencement this year is _____________________________pm in Zellerbach Auditorium. IAS holds one ceremony each May for Summer, Fall and Spring graduates. The time does conflict with final exams, so be sure you choose your spring classes carefully. For example, last spring, the Econ 100A final conflicted with finals. Academic Dishonesty and Policies There is no easier way to get an F in an IAS course or end your grad school career than through plagiarism. Even if you don’t know you plagiarized, you are still held accountable for the rules of correctly citing sources. Be sure you inform yourself about the definitions of plagiarism. Records Be sure to keep a file with all the materials you receive about your major, starting with today’s handouts Before you turn in any document at this university, whether to us, L&S, Financial Aid, a professor (including papers) or wherever, make a copy for your records
