                                    Dear Reader,

Berkshire’s major publication for 2009–2010 is the Berkshire Encyclopedia of Sustainability.
Librarians led us to this topic with their thoughtful responses to an online survey, and
librarians continually help us shape our goal of meeting the needs of 21st-century students and
professionals. Because of everyday contact with their “colleagues in the classroom,” librarians
have enabled us to develop an approach to reference publishing that is truly relevant to today’s
                                    need for knowledge.
Over the last year I’ve come to look with a fresh eye at Britannica’s characterization (in 1890!)
of an encyclopedia as “a complete course of instruction in all parts of knowledge.” Britannica
editors, of course, were referring to the circular sense of knowledge—encompassing all arts and
sciences—set forth by the ancient Greeks. In the 21st century, I thought, an encyclopedia needs
to present a circle of knowledge with crisp short-form content attuned to our fast-paced world.
karen Christensen is Berkshire’s It’s fitting that this new understanding was reinforced by working on the Berkshire Encyclopedia
CEO and cofounder, as well as
a journalist and speaker focusing of China; over the course of five years, from 1403 to 1408, the Chinese compiled one of the
on China, sustainability, and biggest compendia of knowledge in the world—the Yongle Dadian, a 11,095-volume work with
community building.
22,877 chapters and a sixty-chapter-long table of contents.
“Knowledge is power,” said Francis Bacon. A Berkshire encyclopedia offers the combined
knowledge, and wisdom, of hundreds or thousands of people who have devoted their careers
to research and teaching—a circle of knowledge arising from our network of international
scholars and experts. You’ll see in this catalog that the cover design of every new publication
uses a circular motif, an image of opening. On the Berkshire Encyclopedia of China there is an
opening fan. On the Berkshire Encyclopedia of Sustainability there are unfurling fern fronds. For
the second edition of the Berkshire Encyclopedia of World History, we superimposed a nautilus
shell spiral over the first edition’s “cave art” cover.
These serendipitous circles confirm my certainty that encyclopedia publishers, along with
librarians, authors, and teachers, must share the responsibility of building ever-opening circles
of knowledge. Such an endeavor depends on new forms of networking, as well as on the best
traditions of scholarly and information management. It can exist harmoniously with Google
and Wikipedia, which are exciting, untamed bazaars full of wonderful things as well as dross.
Our job is to create something like the traditional Chinese teahouse of antiquity; a haven of
calm within a wild world, where readers and researchers can find sustenance, inspiration, and
                                    community, too.

               It’s the Content that Matters . . .

               BERkSHIRE’S oNlINE INItIatIvES aND PaRtNERS
Above our desks we’ve tacked strips of paper with the words, “It’s the content, stupid.” We put
them up as the tide of Web 2.0 publishing was rising, to remind ourselves that our primary job
is to give readers great content, not to wow them with technology. The subjects we cover in
our library publications, the unique perspectives and data we make available, are what really
count. We want to make reference relevant.
Still, keeping content in mind, we do love new technologies and online possibilities.
Berkshire was far ahead of most reference publishers in using collaborative e-tools. We’ve
offered e-newsletters related to our reference publications and hosted much-acclaimed
blogs. Today, we’re using the expertise we developed while working on the Encyclopedia of
Community and the Berkshire Encyclopedia of Human–Computer Interaction to shape an online
publishing program that will use both established distribution channels and experimental
approaches, such as group blogs for China (www.baoblogs.com) and sustainability experts
               (www.sustainablogs.com).
Berkshire is also committed to sharing the wealth of our knowledge. We host free databases
in which we have collected titles, brief synopses, and other pertinent details about movies,
documentaries, plays, books, TV/radio programs, and music—in other words, we’ve
complied a rich resource of the popular culture that informs our lives and reflects our history—
on themes related to such subjects as computers, community life, and global perspectives
(click on “Berkshire online” at www.berkshirepublishing.com).
To keep our content accessible—and our customers informed about the topics increasingly
relevant in a changing world—we continue to work with a wide range of partners that distribute
               our publications in digital editions: ecoBrain; Green Books for Green Living; ebooks.com;
               Net Library; Credo Reference; Gale Virtual Reference Library; Scribd; myilibrary; Stanza;
and EBSCO publishing. To find links to all of our partners, visit:
                www.berkshirepublishing.com/online.
Please check in from time to time on Berkshire Publishing’s website to see what’s newly
               available (www.berkshirepublishing.com).

The Good Library Manual is a practical guide to transforming any public
library—large and small, city and rural—by making every aspect of the library
experience appealing and enjoyable. The author, Tim Coates, began his career
with W. H. Smith and was managing director of Waterstone’s, the largest U.K.
specialist bookseller, and has become known as “an outspoken champion of
the absolutely central place of books in libraries.” The Good Library Manual was
created in conjunction with the Good Library Blog, which is not only read by
Paperback, full color thousands every week but also archived by the British Library.
