    PROBLEMS OF ESTIMATION AND
 INDUSTRIAL EVALUATION OF RESERVES
AND RESOURCES OF COAL BED METHANE

Estimation of coal bed methane resources in
Ukraine is carried out for a period of at least last
twenty years. However, in order to realize large-
scale projects on coal deposits methane
production in Ukraine we lack a regulatory basis
for methane reserves estimation, and this
hampers      the   process    the    creation   and
development of coal bed methane industry. Lack
of estimated methane reserves that would be
reliably proved, prevents attraction of investments
into this industry. That is why development of
regulations for the estimation of methane reserves
at different levels of coal deposits development,
which would take into account the special mining
and geological conditions, is certainly an
important and urgent problem for the national
geological survey.

State Commission of Ukraine on Mineral
Resources is on its way in creating the
regulations for application of the Classification
of reserves and resources of the State fund of
subsurface resources of Ukraine in order to
estimate the resources of coal bed methane
deposits. This  problem  was  not  earlier  solved  by 
SCMR of USSR because of extreme complexity of the 
problem.

SCMR of Ukraine together with scientific and research
organizations as well as production geological companies
of the coal mining complex has learned the state of the
problem and worked out the Concept of activities,
according to which METHANE IS VIEWED NOT AS
ASSOCIATED MINERAL, BUT AS A STANDALONE
MINERAL RESOURCE OF THE COMPLEX METHANE AND
COAL DEPOSIT, and estimation of the produced methane
reserves is accomplished according to the stages of
degasification treatment during the coal bed development:

  advance degasification, generally surface drilling;
  attending degasification, generally underground well
drilling;
   degasification of technogeneous deposits in the mined-
out space;
  there should be separate regulations for the control of
coal bed methane estimation beyond the coal mine fields.

This kind of distinguishing the above mentioned areas
is appropriate for the natural properties of methane
accumulation in the coal deposits,         and for the
extreme diversity of the flow charts of its production
and preparation to the actual use, as well as for settled
staging of geological exploration and industrial
development of the methane and coal deposits

IN THE PRESENT TECHNICAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL
STAGE IT IS POSSIBLE TO CARRY OUT THE
FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES ECONOMICALLY SENSIBLY:


  extraction  of  methane  by  means  of  underground 
degasification, attending the coal production; 
  extraction of methane through the surface‐drilled wells  in 
the  mining  areas  and  in  the  idle  areas  in  the  advance 
degasification mode;
  extraction  of  methane  in  the  fields  of  closed  mines  by 
means  of    post‐production  degasification  of  the  shifted  coal 
deposits.

Accordingly, determination of resource potential of coal bed
methane should be based on the separate estimation and
geological and economical evaluation of its extractive and the
way of its production.
In this view coal bed methane is classified into three types of
mineral resources that differ in their formation conditions and the
ways of their production and use:

   Extractive coal mine methane, captured along with the mining
activities by means of vacuum-pump station of the system
attending the coal production degasification through the
specially drilled wells.
  Extractive coal mine methane – coal bed methane, extracted
through the surface-drilled wells along with advance and
attending degasification.
   Methane of technogeneous deposits in the mined-out coal bed
areas of the operating and closed mines, extracted through the
surface-drilled wells during the post-production degasification.
   Methane of natural deposits in the untouched coal beds,
extracted by means of oil and gas complex technologies.

 THE ABOVE MENTIONED TYPES OF COAL BED
METHANE MUST BE SEPARETELY REGISTERED
          IN THE STATE BALANCE
IN THE SAME WAY AS UNDERGROUND WATERS
 ARE REGISTERED: MEDICINAL, DRINKING AND
              POWER WATERS.

As of the present moment the following documents were
approved and registered in the Ministry of Justice by the
SCMR Order of 07 November 2008:

1) Regulations on application of the mineral resources and
reserves Classification of the State Fund of mineral
resources in the geological and economical estimation of
general (emissive) and extractive reserves in the areas of
attending technologically required degasification during
the coal deposits development, and
2) Methodological guidelines on coal mine methane
reserves estimation in the areas of attending
technologically required degasification during the coal
deposits development.
Therefore, regulatory and methodological basis was
prepared for estimation and state registration of the
extractive reserves of coal mine methane.

THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS ARE BEING
DEVELOPED IN SCMR:

 1) Regulations on application of mineral resources
and reserves Classification of the State Fund of
mineral resources in the evaluation of resources and
estimation of the borehole methane reserves of the
coal deposits in the advance degasification areas by
daylight surface drilling;

 2) Methodological guidelines on technogeneous
methane reserves and resources estimation in the
mined-out coal deposits;

  3) Methodological guidelines on reserves and
resources estimation of free methane deposits in the
untouched coal beds.

Methodology of coal bed methane exploration must
comply with the coal production safety requirements
and conform with methodology of extractive reserves
exploration and estimation of oil and gas deposits.
Specifically the criteria of coal deposit areas or
individual balance coal beds preparation to industrial
development in the view of study of their methane-
bearing quality in the stage of advance degasification
are to be determined. Based on these criteria, the
necessary density of boreholes and observation holes
form the daylight surface is to be determined and,
accordingly, the coal reserves extracted during
advance degasification are to be calculated.
In the stage of coal bed development the part of coal
methane emission reserves that should be extracted
from the coal deposit by means of attending
degasification is to be determined in order to provide
coal production safety.                             11
This concept of exploration and estimation of
the extractive coal bed methane reserves is
going to make the following actions possible:
estimation of this fuel and energy raw material,
that can be actually extracted given the
present technical and economical conditions:
that is of extreme importance for planning and
investing into methane production;
coordination of coal production safety and
ecological problems dealing with coal mine
methane with the methodology of geological
exploration in the methane and coal deposit
areas.
