					JOB TITLE:                       TECHNICAL WRITER

REPORTS TO:                      Supervisor, Technology Services

POSITION PURPOSE:

Creates and updates Technology Services technical documentation, Web-based documentation, and other
department and customer communications. The Technical Writer s duties include responsibility for
department and customer liaison, publication planning, drafting, editing, design, production liaison and
distribution.

NATURE & SCOPE:

This position is subject to board policies, administrative rules and procedures, department regulations and
applicable State and Federal statutes. This position carries no administrative authority or responsibility.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Research, write, edit and proofread TS related technical data for use in documents, or sections of
   applicable documents such as manuals, procedures, or specifications; including printed, on-line, or
   web based.

2. Provides technical documentation update planning assistance to TS colleagues, MESD colleagues, or
   customers including analyzing project needs; conducting user studies and reference reviews.

3. Develops and adheres to standards for completeness, accuracy, quality, format, and style and
   maintains archive records for both technical documentation and illustrations.

4. Creates and modifies page layout, forms, flowcharts, graphics, and illustrations with software
   products such as Word, PageMaker, CorelDraw and Visio.

5. Arranges publication plans with production department, obtains appropriate final approvals, and
   arranges for publication production and distribution.

6. Maintains confidentiality of customer data; obtains customer authorization prior to modifying and/or
   releasing customer data.

7. Visits customers in their own surroundings in order to define standards, provide supplemental
   training, strengthen communications, and maintain an awareness of the customer needs and
   requirements.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Maintains a working knowledge of MESD Technology Services activities and service.

2. Attends department and other staff meetings.

3. Performs other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in an office and computer operating environment; involves sitting, walking and lifting
up to 40 pound loads, and requires hand/eye coordination in the efficient operation of computers and
related equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Ability to develop and maintain a working knowledge of computer software/hardware concepts
    applicable to mainframes, microcomputers, peripheral equipment, software applications, networks,
    and web pages.

    Ability to listen and effectively work with customers through telephone and in-person meetings about
    technical writing concepts and publication needs.

    Ability to learn new technologies as needed.

    Outstanding ability to convert technical language into easy-to-understand English.

    Ability to communicate effectively with other employees and customers using tact, courtesy and good
    judgment.

    Effective technical publication planning, writing, editing, publication, quality control skills, problem
    solving, and multi-tasking skills.

    Position requires a team worker who is self-directed.

    Demonstrated interest in professional growth and development.

    Ability to physically perform assigned duties.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Associate degree level training and two years of technical publications experience with information
systems customer service and basic information systems training, or any combination of education and
experience, which would provide the applicant with the skills, knowledge and ability required to perform
the job.
