FROM THE CHAIRPERSON
An exciting couple of months have passed. In August, the Queensland Branch held its annual
Symposium and it was again a great success. The Symposium will be described in more detail
later in the newsletter, but I would like to thank Heidi Wong, the Convenor of the event, for her
tireless efforts to make the Symposium such a great success. I would also like to thank the other
Committee members that assisted Heidi in preparation for the day, and I would also like to
acknowledge the generous sponsorship provided by Astra Zeneca to make the day possible.
We still have the SHPA Queensland Branch Annual General Meeting and the annual Trivia Night
coming up in December. So more exciting activities ahead!
We are now under a month away from the 36th SHPA Conference in Melbourne. By now, those of
you who submitted abstracts should know whether you were accepted for either an oral or poster
presentation. I am led to believe that many submissions were not accepted which was due to the
record high number of high-quality submissions. This is unfortunate, but I encourage each of you
to submit to our Qld Branch Symposium next year, so that you may communicate your results to
other pharmacists. For those of you that will have an opportunity to showcase your research, I
wish you well!
A final comment I would like to make relates to the 50th anniversary of SHPA becoming a national
organization – this will occur in 2011. Some special activities are planned for the 37th SHPA
Conference in Hobart. This may be a good conference to mark in the calendar early!

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN NEWS
Formation of National Technician Network
At the February meeting of the SHPA Federal Council, approval in principle was given for the
formation of an SHPA National Technician Network. Technician representatives from each branch
committee were invited as observers to the Federal Council meeting on Sunday 23rd and Monday
24th May where the formation of the network was discussed and endorsed by the SHPA CEO and
council members.
The members of the group are Jackie Abercrombie (Vic), Paula Caird (WA), Judy Manning (SA),
Joan Semmler (Qld), and Becky Walsh (NSW, Chairperson). The aims of the network will be to
actively promote education for technicians, and to provide a forum for communication and
discussion of technician specific issues. For the first few months the group will be meeting by
teleconference to gather information on technician roles around Australia and identify where there
is common ground and where there are differences.
All members of the network are grateful to their Branch Committees and the Federal Council for
their support and encouragement. I occasionally hear suggestions that pharmacy technicians
need their own professional organisation, but I wonder if we appreciate the benefits of having the
support and backing of an organisation such as the SHPA. Nowhere else in the world does the
professional society for hospital pharmacists welcome and support technician membership as the
SHPA does. I would encourage all interested pharmacy assistant/technician members to contact
members of the national network to bring forward any issues they would like discussed at a
national level and to share ideas.
There will be a breakfast session on the Saturday morning of the Medicines Management 2010
conference in Melbourne to introduce the network and provide a forum for discussion. Come along
to the Technician Network Breakfast for more information, or contact Joan Semmler
(Joan_semmler@health.qld.gov.au )

QUEENSALAND BRANCH SYMPOSIUM FEEDBACK
In August, the SHPA Qld Branch held the Symposium themed ‘Points of Entry to Hospital’
which focused on multidisciplinary care for patients on admission to hospital through various
pathways. It included clinical services provided in Emergency Departments, Ambulance
Service, Poisons Information Centre, Pre-admission Clinics and Medical Assessment and
Planning Unit.
Participants’ evaluation of the Branch Symposium was summarised in
diagrams below.
PART A: Overall Evaluation
Attending the CPD event
was definitely worthwhile
There was adequate
opportunity of ask
questions
The materal was up to
date
The material was well
presented
The educational content
of the CPD event was of
high quality
8 8.2 8.4 8.6 8.8 9
Mean Score (10 = Strongly Agree, 1 = Strongly Disagree)
Having good speakers who were experienced in the field ensured the currency of information.
The Symposium was considered as a practical rather than therapeutic continuing education
event and therefore decreased the perceived educational content of the CPD event. The
committee may wish to consider therapeutic topics for future programs.
PART B: Learning Objectives
This Symposium w as a good
opportunity to share
professional know ledge,
experience and expertise
I am more confident in fluid and
electrolyte management and
managing toxicology scenarios
I have better understanding of
patient admission pathw ays and
how they may impact on
management
I have increased know ledge and
skills to practise in Emergency,
pre-admission clinic and MAPU
7.2 7.4 7.6 7.8 8 8.2
Mean Score (10 = Strong Agree, 1 = Strongly Disagree)
The Symposium was successful in achieving its key learning points – “a better understanding
of patient admission pathways and how they may impact management”. However due to its
didactic nature, there were insufficient opportunities to share professional experience. Group
discussions and oral presentation sessions may be good alternatives. Participants reported
less improvements into their skills to practise in Emergency, pre-admission clinic and MAPU
may be due to a few reasons. For example, participants may have already been practising in
these areas. Limited time was allocated to pre-admission clinic and MAPU sessions. The
presentations had strong emphasis on setting up the service rather than the clinical problems
seen in these areas.

GUIDELINES FOR DISBURSEMENTS FROM THE TRAVEL FUND
The purpose of these guidelines is:
A) To outline the conditions with which applicants must comply in order to apply for a subsidy and to preserve their eligibility for receipt of
any allocated subsidy.
B) To indicate the manner in which the State Branch Committee decides which applicants are eligible to receive assistance from the fund,
and the amount of subsidy in any particular case.
The Queensland State Branch Committee of SHPA may, at its discretion and subject to the availability of funds, allocate an amount to the Travel
Fund. The State Branch Committee is not obliged to disburse all monies in the Travel Fund, and may specify a maximum disbursement per
applicant in years when a heavy demand is placed upon the fund. Travel Fund assistance is available to members with at least 12 months
continuous membership
CONDITIONS
The Travel Fund belongs to every member of the State Branch. The State Branch Committee, as trustee for the Fund, has a duty to ensure that it
is used for the benefit of all members. Consequently, it is expected that a recipient will provide a report that will be of interest and possible
educational benefit to members who did not have the opportunity to attend the event for which the disbursement was awarded. Conditions to be
met by the applicant are:
i) The applicant must have made prior application for assistance to her/his employer; application may be made to the State Branch pending
s
the employer' decision. A copy of the reply from your employer MUST be forwarded to the committee before any monies can be
disbursed.
ii) The applicant must be a current financial member of the Qld. State Branch of SHPA.
iii) The assistance is solely towards travel and accommodation (not registration) associated with events within Australia.
iv) Written application must be lodged at least 45 days of the event in question. (The Committee may suspend this condition in specific
instances.)
v) Photocopies of receipts must be provided to substantiate a claim for allocated assistance.
vi) A report is to be furnished to the State Branch Committee, within twenty-one (21) days of the last day of the event. Reports must include
• s
A front page showing the author' name and address, current employment designation. place of employment, location and date
of the event, length of attendance at the event and clearly indicated report title.
• The report must be between 750 and 1500 words in length and should be interesting, containing viewpoints and conclusions
belonging to the author as well as a statement of benefits derived from attendance at the event. A mere listing of the
programme, or of sessions attended by the author is insufficient. An in-depth treatment of one or more subjects is preferable to
a light discussion of the event in general. An abstract of the report, between 200 and 300 words in length, with content such
that it would be suitable for publication in the State Branch Newsletter is also to be provided.
• This report is to be freely available to any member upon application to the State Branch Committee.
viii) The State Branch Committee decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into.
COMMITTEE DECISION PROCESS
Consideration will be given to (not necessarily in order of precedence):
i) Funding received by the applicant from other sources, e.g. the employer.
ii) The total, non-registration, expenses incurred
iii) Whether the applicant is making a specific contribution to the event, e.g. poster, paper.
iv) Relevance of the event to, and anticipated benefits for, hospital pharmacy practice.

vii) The total number of applicants.
