This manual can be used as reference for installing Regional Languages and Keyboard Support for
Windows Operating System. Detailed configuration information are illustrated which can be applied to any
Regional Language. This manual can be freely distributed as long as this page is included.

1. Installation of Regional Languages

Before installing the keyboard layout for Tamil, you must make sure that you have installed Regional
Languages support for your Windows Operating System. Windows 7 and Windows Vista by default installs
support for Indian / Thai Languages. However XP does not. Please check if the Regional support is installed. If
not install them first.

      1.1 Windows XP 

      Click on Start and then Run. In the box type intl.cpl and then press OK.




      You will be displayed with the following screen




      Click on Languages tab. Check “Install files for complex script and right to-left language (including
      Thai)” is clicked as shown in the picture above. If it is already clicked then click Cancel button. Go to
      next Section.
             If the Check box is not clicked, then you will need to install Support for Regional Languages.
             Please ensure you have Windows XP original CD or Windows XP Install files in your hard disk.
             Click on the Check box as shown in the above diagram.
             Click on Apply button. (This will be disabled, if the Language Support is already installed).
             Follow the prompt and install Support for Regional Languages.

2. Keyboard Layout Installation

Now make sure you have downloaded and installed “FontInstall” program. This will install Four variations of
Keyboard Layout and 10 different Unicode Fonts for Tamil.
Instructions for installing Tamil Keyboard Layout for Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows Vista are given
below:



      2.1     Windows XP: 

       Click on Start, Navigate to Kamban Software and click on it. You will see Four different layouts. You
      can click any one of them to install or have all four layouts installed one after the other.




      2.2     Windows 7 and Windows Vista: 

      Click on Windows Icon and then “All Programs”. Navigate to Kamban Software and click on it. You
      will see Four different layouts. You can click any one of them to install or have all four layouts installed
      one after the other.

3. Configuring Keyboard Layout

Once the Keyboards are installed, you can configure them as per your requirement. Configuration for Windows
XP, Windows 7 and Windows Vista are given below:

      3.1     Windows XP 

      In order to type in Tamil, you must select Tamil Keyboard. To make it easy for changing keyboards,
      follow the steps given below:
             Right Click on Language Bar (“EN”) on the “Tool Bar” and click on the “Settings..” menu. This
              will bring up the “Text Services and Input Languages” screen. . (If you do not see “EN” see the
              section “Displaying Language Bar”)




             On the “Text Services and Input Languages” screen you can see all the Keyboard Layouts
              installed for Tamil. Optionally click on “Key Settings” to bring up the “Advanced Key Settings”
              Dialog. Here you can change or assign “Short cut” keys for changing between the keyboard and
              Language. For Example, in the figure shown below, pressing left side <Alt> key + <Shift> key
              will change the language from English to Tamil. Pressing left side <Alt> key + <Shift> key +
              <2> key will use “DOE Standard” Keyboard Layout.
              By clicking on “Change Key Sequence...” button, will bring up the “Change Key Sequence”
              Dialog, where you can assign or change any combination of <Ctrl>, <Alt> keys to your favourite
              Keyboard Layout.

            Clicking the “Language Bar...” option will provide additional configuration options:




             Check the box which ever you are comfortable with.


            Also on the Language Bar Settings Clicking on “Restore the Language bar” option will bring the
             Language bar on the top right side screen as shown:




            To Type in Tamil, open “Notepad” application or any of your favourite application and type. To
             change language just click on the “Language bar” and change to Tamil and your favourite
             “Keyboard Layout”. You can also save the file in Tamil name if you want.

             “Text Services and Input Languages” has three Tabs. First one is “General”, where you can see
             the keyboards installed for Tamil.




            Clicking on Language Bar will bring the few options, which you can select as your preference.
             Some of the recommended options are highlighted.

             3.2.1   Displaying Language Bar 

             Finally if you have lost your “Language Bar” or do not see “EN” in your “Task Bar” then
             displaying the Language bar is a twostep process.
             First bring the “Region and Language” Dialog box. Click on “Windows Icon” and type intl.cpl in
             “Search box”, then press <Enter>:

             Click on “Keyboard and Languages” Tab and then click on “Change keyboards...” to bring up
             “Text Services and Input Languages” Dialog box. Select “Language Bar” tab and then click
             either on “Docked in the taskbar” or “Floating on Desktop” option. Don’t forget to click on
             “Apply” once you change your options.

4. Displaying On Screen Keyboard

For ease of use you can display on screen Keyboard. Follow the steps given below:



      4.1     Windows XP 

      Click on Start / Run and then type osk.exe. Click ok




      You will see a On Screen keyboard as shown, which you can use by clicking the keys with mouse.

     Click on “Windows Icon” and then type osk.exe. Press <Enter>




     You will see a On Screen keyboard as shown, which you can use by clicking the keys with mouse.
