APA Florida 2008 Annual Conference Presentation Summary Form Conference Theme: Sustainability… just plan it Sustainability: ―Meeting the needs of present generations while not compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.‖ (1987 UN ―Our Common Future‖) Sustainability is a term that has become an important part of the planning profession. In 2008 Florida planners will converge on downtown Miami to explore this topic in greater depth. If you have a plan or relevant experience with sustainable planning, please consider submitting it as a proposal for the 2008 conference. The conference tracks are as follows:       Environment - How does the built environment impact our ecosystem? Can we do a better job? What have planners done to improve our built environment and to encourage sustainability? Society - Are we doing enough to preserve our culture? Are we creating nurturing environments for our communities? How are we doing with affordable housing? Crime prevention? Education? Health? Economy and Transportation - What are the economic benefits to sustainable design? What is transportation’s role? What redevelopment challenges are we facing and how does that affect the economy? Sustainable Initiatives - What are other communities doing to employ environment, society, economic development? What can be learned from past sustainable planning efforts? Professional Development - What tools do we have as planners to promote sustainability? What are our ethical responsibilities? Hot Topics – Sustainable planning topic of your choice. Information Requirements: The following information must be provided in order for the Conference Host Section and APA Florida to consider the session for the conference and sponsor approved sessions for AICP CM Credits. Complete information is required for each item. Do not attach any additional information beyond what is requested and respect the identified word limitations. Please utilize a marketing approach when describing sessions. Proposals must be received by 5 p.m., March 1, 2008. E-mail a completed form to submissions@floridaplanning.org After you have submitted a proposal, you will receive an email acknowledging the receipt of the proposal. This email is your indication that the submittal process was successful. If you do not get this email, please contact the Chapter Office at 850-201-3272 or fapa@floridaplanning.org to ensure that your proposal was actually received. Ethics/Law Credits – Please mark with an X if your session is designed to meet the AICP CM Ethics or Law Requirements. ___ Ethics ___ Law Additional Presentation Information Attached (a) Speaker Biographies (including current professional title and notable achievements that indicate required level of expertise (short - 100 words max for each speaker)—this information WILL be required to complete AICP CM Accreditation. Do not submit attachments or resumes as part of a biography; please respect the 100 word limit for each speaker. (b) In 300 words or less, please describe how the proposed session meets or fulfills each of the following criteria: 1) designed to meet a specific planning-related training objective; 2) designed to teach subject matter appropriate in depth and scope and at a level beyond a planner with at least two years of professional planning experience; 3) is non promotional in nature; 4) communicates a clearly identified educational purpose or objective, uses learning methodologies and formats that are appropriate to the activity's educational purpose or objectives; 5) designed to address demonstrated educational needs. (c) For ethics requirement: in 100 words or less, describe how the content is related to the AICP Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. It should be clearly stated that the session is designed to qualify for ethics CM credits. (d) For law requirement: in 100 words or less, describe how the content is related to planning law, such as environmental law, land use law, redevelopment law, administrative law, housing law, etc. Presentations seeking law-credit CM approval must be closely related to existing planning laws or case decisions or trends in existing planning laws or case decisions. Political movements, policy recommendations, and policy initiatives are not ―current planning law‖. Existing planning laws or case decisions must clearly constitute a majority of the content of the activity. It should be clearly stated that the session is designed to qualify for law CM credits.
