Nothing to celebrate Alex Matlala WHILE thousands of South Africans converged at stadiums across the country to celebrate Freedom Day last Friday, Nchakga Maria Mmola (51) of Namakgale near Phalaborwa was sitting sadly in a tent with five of her grand children wondering were their next meal would come from. In her experience, , there was nothing for her to celebrate on Freedom Day. Motloutsi was just one of the many hundreds of women in South Africa who did not see or taste the fruit of ’Freedom’ ... even 13-years after the advent of democracy. Mmola's ordeal started last November when her house was gutted by fire. Her clothes, food and furniture were all lost. Mmola, together with the children, were asleep when they were awakened by a terrible smoke smell. By then their house was already surrounded by fire that trapped them in the house. The brave Mmola wrapped two of children with a wet blanket and ran with them through the fire until she managed to exit the burning house. Without any further word, Mmola then plunged a second time into the vicious fire into the bedroom where two children were left and wrapped them with another wet blanket. Once agan, she ran as if her life depended on it to save the children. People, who were outside the house helped to to exstinguish the fir, They also sang and danced for her bravery. It was not known yet what caused the fire but neighbours alleged the fire was possibly caused by an illegal electric connection.
