World Cup Final Day! If this newsletter seems a little dis-jointed, please forgive me.
Soccer is my second favourite sport and as I sit here on the Sunday afternoon of the
World Cup Final in South Africa, my mind may wander. We (as a country) have had
a fabulous month and it’s seems almost a pity that we are going to get back to
“normal” on Monday! Enjoy the game this evening. My heart would love Holland to
win but my head says Spain. We shall see.

My good chum, Renee Nell, went out last weekend and did the Rhodes Ultra Trail
run. 52km over snowy mountains in the North Eastern Cape. A brave thing to do just
one month after Comrades in any event, but doing it when sick is either brave or stubborn, depending on which way you
look at it. It didn’t go according to plan, but she has written a great race report for us, so enjoy that.

I’ve added my race reports on the two races this weekend, including somewhat of a personal triumph for me at Pirates.
Very few CSIR runners evident at races at the moment, but with the Metro Police restriction ending this week, hopefully
we’ll see more of you from next week. Ken Nurden of Agape wrote the following in his club’s newsletter: -

We owe a debt of thanks to those that managed to make a plan so that we did in fact have the odd race
here and there. Andre Gobey with the cross country, Daan Du Toit, RWFL and Irene for the race this past
week-end are the ones that come to mind … apologies if I left someone out.

I agree with him 100%. If it wasn’t for these dedicated people, what would we do?

Some 1000km Challenge news as well for those of you who have done this competition.

Enjoy this week’s news – don’t forget our own race on the 18th September!

Yours in running,

Ken Swettenham

2. SHORTS
Time Trials: Every Tuesday 17:15. The Time Trials will start after the announcements from outside the Lapa near the
Tarantaal. We have 4km, 6km and 8km routes available. Please join us for a drink in the Tarantaal afterwards!

Please note the change of start time for the winter months – we do start 15 minutes earlier to take into account the
earlier darkness hours in the evening. The Time Trial route is also run in the reverse direction during these months
and this arrangement will remain in place until the 31st August 2010.

The next “Special Time Trial” evening will be Tuesday 27th July 2010. Remember, a free drink voucher will be
given to all paid-up club members who run the official Time Trial over any distance. This voucher will entitle you
to a free beer, glass of wine, single tot of spirits, cool drink or cooler. Please note that if this “Special Time Trial”
is not supported by the members, then regrettably it will be the last one – other than the first one that we did, the
support has been poor – so please come and run the Time Trial that evening!

As a special concession to our walking members, they may start the Time Trials at 17h00 and still qualify for the
free drinks voucher on the special Time Trial days.

Club Clothing: As you are all aware, we have just had new colours for our vests introduced. Maryna Meets has gone
one step further and at her own cost and investigation has had a long sleeved top made in the new colours. This top is
shown below, so that you can see how stunning it looks: -

If you would be interested in purchasing a top similar to this, please e-mail me at kenjohn@iafrica.com. If we do
get enough interest from club members, we will investigate the cost of getting these done in bulk!

Sadly, at this stage only 8 people have indicated that they would be interested in buying such a top. This is less
than 10% of our membership and it would not be worth while for us to negotiate a bulk discount for such a low
number – we need a lot more. I will keep this offer in the newsletter for one more week to see if we get further
response. If not, I’m afraid we will have to withdraw this offer.

Membership: All queries regarding membership may be directed to Annette Boshoff. She can be contacted on 076 743
6994 or annetteb@realnet.co.za

Club Colours: Club colours are available from Run-a-way Sport (Glenfair Shopping Centre, Lynnwood). They can be
contacted on (012) 3613733 with any queries.

Our new club colours are now available. If you haven’t received your club colours, then please contact Henk
Breytenbach on hbreyten@csir.co.za to arrange to collect them from him or collect them on our Time Trial
evenings. There is no cost for existing club members.

Website: Our club website is www.csirrunner.co.za. Chantelle Breytenbach has done a fabulous job on the website, so
please check it out. All submissions and suggestions for the website may be e-mailed to her at
chantelle@csirrunner.co.za.

May I offer my personal congratulations to Chantelle on the awesome job that she is doing. Our website is looking
the best it ever has done!

4. CSIR 10/21km ROAD RACE
18th of September 2010 is the date of our race this year. Please mark it in your 2010 diaries now. We will
need your help on the day. It is a call to arms for all club members!

Our club Chairman, Thabo Pooe, is on the lookout for sponsors for our race this year to make it bigger
and better than ever. If you know of anybody who may be able to sponsor our race, or if you are a
decision maker in your business who may consider offering us some sponsorship, please contact Thabo!
All sponsors will be recognised and permitted to advertise at the race.

We have already started race organisation meetings. There will be some minor route changes for 2010.
The Helper’s run will be held on the 11th or 12th September 2010 – this date will be confirmed to you as
soon as it is finalised. Please do the Helpers run, as it counts towards league points for our club as our
race is a league race this year.

Please think about your preferred Helper’s task on the day. Helpers lists will be out during July.

Facebook
For those of you on Facebook, there is a group simply called “CSIR Running Club”. I post updates of club
events and happenings on the group and encourage all members to join this group. We have 53 members on
the group, including a number of non-CSIR running club people who are interested in what we are doing here.

There are some fabulous club photographs on our Facebook Home Page. My grateful thanks goes to
Chantelle Breytenbach for posting these photos. Please go and have a look at them! This includes some
photographs from the Comrades Marathon.

This is a great way of keeping in touch and I encourage all members to add me as a Friend and to add each
other as Friends, so we can all keep in touch with each other. If you are not a member of Facebook, then join
at www.facebook.com. If you are a member, then join the group on the link

AGN League

According to the Carlton Race Flyer for the 7th August 2010, that race has been granted League Race status. Other
than the race flyer, I have not heard anything official from AGN yet.

Please note that the club Gazebo with eats & drinks for free for all members will be at Running League Races
only.

For the benefit of all those that are new to participating in league races … both running and walking … there are
some important points that you should be aware of when entering a league race.

    1. The league races only apply to Athletics Gauteng North … AGN. It does not apply to Central Gauteng
Athletics … CGA. If you therefore fill in the ‘Prov’ section with Gauteng or GP or G or leave the ‘Prov’
section blank you will be deleted from the league calculation unless someone from the club emails that you
are in fact a registered AGN athlete. This rule applies to every AGN athlete and not only to some who
happen to be members of a club with a sister club with the same club name in another province.

    2. If you don’t fill in your gender or sex you will default to “Male’

    3. If you do not fill in your age you will default to ‘Senior’

Comrades 2011

The 2011 Comrades Marathon will take place on Sunday 29 May and will be an Up Run,
starting in Durban and finishing in Pietermaritzburg. The race will commence at 05h30
from the Durban City Hall and finish at the Midlands Cricket Oval in
Pietermaritzburg.

After the hugely successful implementation of the new early entry process for the
2010 Comrades Marathon, when over 23 000 athletes responded to the call for entries,
the CMA has opted to stick with the winning formula and will open entries for the
2011 Comrades Marathon on Wednesday 1 September 2010!

All former and aspiring Comrades runners are invited to submit their entry for the
2011 race from 1 September to 30 November 2010. There will only be one three-month
window (September - November) for athletes to enter, be they former Comrades runners
or Novices. Entries will be limited to a maximum total of 18 000 athletes. This means
that entries will officially be closed when the maximum number of 18 000 entries are
reached, e.g. if 18 000 entries are reached on 7 November 2010, entries will be
closed immediately and no further entries will be accepted for the 2011 Comrades
Marathon.

Entry fees for the 2011 Comrades Marathon are as follows:
* Local athletes (SA Citizens) R270.00

Old Mutual Two Oceans Ultra Marathon 56km

The 2010 race is well behind us, but please make a note if you wish to run this fantastic event in 2011. The
date for the Two Oceans Marathon in 2011 will be 23rd April 2011. A little later than usual. Gives you more
time to train.

Club Away Weekend
The committee has decided that once again, our “official” club away weekend for 2010 will be at the Parys River
Jol 10km / 25km on the weekend of 9th / 10th October 2010. This is a race that everybody has enjoyed in the past
and we look forward to it again this year. Please keep that weekend free in your diaries. Arrangements regarding
accommodation and other benefits to club members will be advised to you later in the year.

Mark Thompson who is kindly organizing the accommodation for us, sent in the following for your attention: -

Here’s the contact info for the Parys w/e.

We agreed at the meeting that the club would make a booking / payment reservation for only the camping
sites (25 x pax) and that anyone wishing to reserve a chalet must do so in their own capacity (including
own payments).

Camping will cost R100 p.p.p.night assuming we can get 6 pax x site. Kids are R50 if under 12.

We need a R50 deposit per person to reserve a camping site.

Race Reports

Rhodes 52km Trail Run by Renee Nell

Let me start at the beginning, I took 2 weeks off from Comrades, and then started training again and had a
wonderful week of running feeling great with no ill effects from the big C, so felt I was fully recovered, however the
following week I picked up a tight chest and a bad cough, so put the training on hold, hoping to clear the chest,
                  t
although I didn'feel ill I just had this persistent cough and tightness in the chest, by Monday the week before
Rhodes I realized I needed to do something quickly as it was not clearing up, so I saw my doctor on Tuesday. He
                                                                                              t
put me on antibiotics and cortisone and said it was a quick fix, but would suggest I don'run, but as you know we
     t
don'listen to those guys, so off to Rhodes we went. I did see the Rhodes doctor as I was a bit concerned about
the high altitude and the effects it would have on my lungs and heart, he also advised me not to run, and gave me
a certificate. I promised to pull out if I felt any chest pains or anything untoward. I also felt better about running
because Joseph had said he would stick with me, and at least he has some medical experience. (Sorry Joe-I didn' t
need CPR)

So at 07h00 we set off with the temps at -5C, keeping a close eye on my heart rate, which did shoot up every so
often and we would then walk to normalize it a bit, about 2hours into the run I felt better, so forward we kept going
with Mavis still looming and not sure what the altitude would do to my breathing, but to my surprise I got up there
quicker then Joe did, arriving in 04h15 and Joe in 04h21, both making the cut off. Joseph started taking strain after
                                                                                                              s
Mavis and I took over the carrying of the water bladder for about 2 hours and we walked / ran the 8-9km' on the
top, this year with no snow which made it much easier. Once we got to the Tiffendell view point we were taken off
road again, this section was not runable with tufts of grass and loose gravel making it very difficult terrain to cross,
                                                        Page 8

                     s
this lasted about 9km' having to duck through 2 barbed wire fences, luckily I had 2 guys to hold the fence open for
me(we had picked Ian up on the top of Mavis also struggling with a tight chest) and they were true gentlemen and
we waited for about 2min for a lady behind us to help her through the fences as well, we then had to climb over a
home made ladder over another fence and then about 200m to the next feeding station, from there they put us
back onto the sand road, which we could now run.

Taking it easy down the mine shaft we kept moving forward, although I had been feeling okay all along I started
taking strain and the pace slowed down Joe had taken over the bladder again, on one of the sharp turns I stopped
to take a photo of the sheer drop on the side and I slipped on the loose gravel and fell flat on my tummy, no serious
damaged done though just some time lost, but we continued on and on, just before the 12km (I think) to go water
point Joseph decided to outdo my fall and somehow lost his footing on the loose gravel and fell quite hard hitting
his elbow and knee, turning onto his back to break the fall, he sat up to try and get up and his left hamstring started
to pull into spasm, fortunately Ian was still with us as we had to put our feet out for him to push against because the
gravel was so loose he needed something to push against while we were pulling him up, and on we went stopping
                                                                                                s
at the water point to pour some water on the bleeding wounds. When we got to about 6km' to go with only about
40min left for the final cut off I started to take strain knowing we had not left enough time in the bag, but we kept
moving forward and so sadly to say we were about a km out with 5 min to go and no fuel left in any of our tanks we
shuffled in 09h05.

Although they had closed the finished area with a board, when they saw us walking up they did open the area
again and allowed us to run/shuffle into finish the distance, we did get a goody bag and another wonderful long
sleeve shirt for our efforts, but unfortunately no medal and not an official finish, but fortunately the number is still
safe and I feel privileged to have managed the distance considering I was not 100%. And Joseph being the good
man that he is stuck with me every step of the way. THANKS JOE!!!! I also need to apologies to Phyllis as I think I
made a comment that may have been uncalled for, as we were heading up the last little pull about 200m to go,
Phyllis mention that we had missed the cut off and asked what had happened, the guys said nothing and I chirped "
we all took strain at some point" SORRY Mom I was just buggered and should have kept my mouth shut too!!!
     t
Didn'mean to be rude.

I had to sit down immediately as my chest had closed totally and I was gasping for air not even being able to talk, it
took about half an hour for the bronchial tubs to open enough for me to feel human again, but I did suffer Saturday
night with the worst cough I have ever had in my life. I enjoyed being able to appreciate the beauty and the
privilege of being able to be out there running in such an amazing event again and will be back next year if I
receive another invite.

We stayed for prize giving and enjoyed the company and swapped war stories with Francious and Pierre that ran
as well, they finished in 08h36 and 08h38 or there about. So a wonderful weekend again.

I will now be nursing my lungs/chest and get that sorted out before I hit the road again.

Ed: I’m am thrilled and honoured to have been asked by Peter to be involved in the committee organizing the “new” 1000km
Challenge. As having completed it 13 times myself, I am also thrilled that the Challenge is not dying but moving to, hopefully,
bigger and better things. It has been a motivator for me in my running over the last 14 years and I’ve achieved things in my
running career that I would never have done without the motivation of the 1000km Challenge. May I say a huge “Thank You” on
behalf of the CSIR Running Club, we have had many members completing this challenge, and myself to Paul and Jenny Selby
for their vision in starting this competition and inspiring many “average” runners to go further and be better than they ever
dreamed that they could be!

Photo of the Week!

Not a photo of a CSIR Runner this week, but a fantastic shot of the Russian twins during the 2010 Comrades Marathon.
(note the “Michael Jackson” one glove running style of Elena. Maybe that’s her secret to her success!)

8. JOKE OF THE WEEK
A mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a Harley
motorcycle when he spotted a well-known heart surgeon in his shop.

The surgeon was there, waiting for the service manager to come and take a
look at his bike.

The mechanic shouted across the garage, "Hey, Doc, can I ask you a
question?"

The surgeon a bit surprised, walked over to the mechanic working on the
motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and
                                                                            em,
asked, "So Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, take valves out, fix '
    em
put ' back in, and when I finish, it works just like new. So how come I get
such a small salary and you get the really big bucks, when you and I are doing
basically the same work?"

The surgeon paused, smiled and leaned over, and whispered to the mechanic...

"Try doing it with the engine running."
