Director: Business Operations
Reports to: Scientific Director - CLUMEQ
Reporting to the Scientific Director - CLUMEQ, the Director, Business Operations (DBO) is
responsible for the management and advancement of the CLUMEQ High Performance
Computing (HPC) centre at McGill University. The DBO proactively supports the Scientific
Director in the promotion, development and expansion of the CLUMEQ system throughout the
scientific community at McGill, provincially, nationally and internationally. The DBO manages
the HPC programmer and analytics team and plays a key supporting role in the design of HPC
infrastructure, in particular to upgrades and system expansion projects. He/she leads the
implementation of major system and/or equipment upgrades and expansions and will liaise and
negotiate with external vendors as well as internal McGill departments as required to
acquire/update equipment for the unit. Working with the Scientific Director, the DBO will
interact with appropriate funding sources in both the public and private sectors to secure
funding for the ongoing work of CLUMEQ.
The Director, Business Operations must be able to function at a high level of responsiveness
and effectiveness within a complex environment. This is a position that often demands quick
turnaround times, flexibility in work hours, and significant initiative and independence in
carrying out work. He or she must have excellent leadership and management skills in order to
effectively lead a professional team. In addition, he/she must have excellent communication
skills, both verbal and written, and have a strong business development and negotiations
background in order to promote CLUMEQ and broaden its user base within the scientific
community. Very strong information technology and computational skills are required in order
to lead the programmer team, manage the physical resources of the unit and promote CLUMEQ
to the scientific community. Direct experience in high performance computing and/or a
computational research environment is required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Lead and manage the ongoing operations of the CLUMEQ unit. Participate in the design
process and lead the implementation of major system/equipment upgrades and
expansions. With the Scientific Director, liaise with the research community of CLUMEQ
institutions to promote the expansion of the user base, notably in the health sciences.
• Lead and manage a team of systems administrators and (HPC) analysts responsible for
providing a superior computational systems environment both technologically and from
a service perspective in support of application scientists. Develop, produce and
implement best in class training programs for CLUMEQ users, both current and
prospective. Responsible for ensuring the customer service focus of the CLUMEQ
team in all areas and for ensuring the highest standard of service delivery. Assess and
address the team’s ability to maintain high-quality, value-added services in response to
the expansion of research at McGill and develop and implement new, creative
approaches where necessary to address increases in workload volume or complexity.
• Responsible for the professional development of all staff, setting team goals and
objectives, implementation of team-building strategies, employing outcome measures
to evaluate goal attainment, evaluating individual and team productivity (quality and
quantity), recognizing and rewarding staff achievement, and taking corrective action
In conjunction with McGill’s Central Administration departments, negotiate major
equipment purchases with external vendors. Ensure compliance with all McGill policies
and procedures as well as any funding agency policies and requirements. Ensure
application of appropriate and most recent risk management requirements.
• Develop/expand relations with other HPC facilities worldwide to remain up to date on
key HPC developments worldwide and assess opportunities for collaborations in order
to better serve the clientele and exploit potential opportunities.
• Report on important external developments as they relate to high performance
computing, best business practices, risk management and research activities in both the
public and private sectors. Provide strategic recommendations for enhancing CLUMEQ’s
success both nationally and internationally.
• Represent CLUMEQ at internal and external meetings.
• An advanced degree in computer or computational science
• Proven leadership ability, the ability to build consensus and manage through execution.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multi-disciplinary teams, take initiative,
prioritize workload, and work independently.
• Demonstrated management skill and experience, including personnel management.
• Strong business skills to develop new business, create business plans, establish and work
within budgets and negotiate with vendors.
• Experience working within a funding environment with both the public sector and
