Falling Panels, Bracing or Hardware
Can Cause Property Damage, Severe Injury or Death.
All instructions and information should be clearly understood by all job site
personnel involved in the construction and erection process prior to
proceeding with construction. If anyone is unclear or has doubts about the
proper use or installation of the products shown, contact Advanced
Building Systems representative or your Design Engineer for clarification.
Failure to do so my result in exposure of workers and other personnel in
the area of the job site to unsafe conditions of hazards, resulting in the
possibility of injury or death.
Warning Do not weld or modify products.
Welding or modifying products may reduce the products load carrying capacity causing unexpected
failure of the product, resulting in possible property damage, injury or death.
Warning Do not substitute products or interchange components from other
manufacturers.
Substituted products may not have the same load carrying capacity or functionality as those
specified. Product components from different manufacturers may not be compatible, causing
product malfunction and/or a reduction in the products load carrying capacity. Either case may result
in an unexpected failure of the product, resulting in possible property damage, injury or death.
Warning Do not use drill-in expansion anchors as lifting inserts or brace
connections unless approved in writing by your Structural
Engineer.
Drill-in expansion anchors do not have the same load resistance characteristics or load carrying
capacities as cast-in inserts. Their improper use may result in a serious accident causing
possible property damage, injury or death.
Warning Do not use damaged or worn products.
Failure to check and replace damaged or worn products may result in product failure causing
property damage, injury or death.
Warning Do not climb on or ride panels during erection.
Riding or climbing on panels can cause severe injury or death.
Warning Do not alter rigging, reinforcing steel or strongbacks.
Altering the rigging can change the applied lift insert loads, panel stresses and overall behaviour of
the panel during erection. Altering or omitting reinforcing steel or strongbacks can cause cracking
or complete panel collapse during erection. Both can lead to property damage, severe injury or death.
Warning Do not deviate from the information shown on the drawings without
notifying Advanced Building Systems Pty. Limited and obtaining
approval from the Design Engineer for the project.

Working Loads in kN in 17 MPa Concrete, 2.5:1 Safety Factor
(This table shows loads based only on the dead load. The dead load should be increased at least 40%
to compensate for initial bond and impact). Additional increases due to unusual live loads or cable
angle magnification may be required for some job conditions. The minimum edge distance required
to obtain the rated loads for face applications is twice the insert depth. For lightweight concrete,
reduce loads by the ratio of the concrete densities.

COIL LIFTING INSERTS
Although generally replaced by the Super Lift Insert, the Meadow Burke Coil Insert system is
suitable for lifting panels with exposed aggregate or other specialised surface treatments. The
small hole created by this type of insert facilitates patching of the surface. Coil Lifting Inserts
use 32mm diameter coil bolts.
SINGLE LIFTING INSERT (For use with single swivel lift plate).
Dual lifting inserts connected by a spacing
rod. For use with Double Angle Lift Plate or
strongback. Comes complete with caps and
seepage plugs.
N.B. When using lifting inserts with exposed
aggregate panels, it is recommended that one
size smaller than indicated be used to prevent
corrosion problems and facilitate patching.
AVAILABLE IN SIZES: 125mm
150mm
175mm
DOUBLE LIFTING INSERT (For use with double angle lift plate)
32mm coil insert is large enough to provide
a safe lift, yet small enough to facilitate
patching of the surface.
Although replaced by the Superlift anchor,
this insert is still used as a lifting anchor on
some exposed aggregate panels.

PRE-CAST
ANCHORS
The four standard Burke Rapid-Lift anchors together with the Hairpin Anchor are designed to handle
nearly every pre-cast panel currently in production. Regardless of use, each size anchor - 1.2 5, 2.5, 5
and 10 tonne - is matched to an equivalent size lifting device. The feature makes Burke Rapid-lift
anchors as safe to use as they are easy to install. Your Advanced Building Systems representative will
help select the best anchor for your particular application.
SPREAD ANCHOR
The most versatile anchor in the Burke Rapid-Lift
line, the Spread Anchor can be used for stripping and
erecting and in tension and in shear loads (except
edge shear in thin panels). Its spread feet design
produces high pull-out strength and allows for back
stripping of panels as well as rotation from horizontal
to vertical.
TWO-HOLE ANCHOR
The bottom hole in this anchor is located well
beneath the concrete line. Thread this hole with a Spread Anchor
tension bar, as specified in the Pre-cast Manual, to
achieve a pull-out load equal to the ultimate
mechanical load. This allows lifting of very thin wall
panels that must be handled at low compressive
strengths, as well as panels made of lightweight Erection Head
concrete. Often used for high tension loads which Two-Hole Anchor
cannot be resisted with spread anchors.
PLATE ANCHOR
The low profile and wide, flat base of the Plate
Anchor make it ideal for face and brick lifts of thin-
walled units. The horizontal plate welded to the
bottom gives the anchor high pull-out strength in
stripping, handling and erection applications.
FLAT FOOT ANCHOR
The Flat Foot Anchor is perfect for back-stripping
and for lifting thin-walled units. Slightly less
expensive than the Plate Anchor, this unit permits

PRECAST
ERECTION ANCHOR 2.5t, 5t, 10t
w/SHEAR PLATE
The Erection Anchor with Shear
Plate is specifically designed for
horizontal to vertical edge pulls and the
shear rotation of thin-walled units. Two
steel protusions or ears on the head of
the anchor provide added protection against
spalling. These protrusions hug either side of
the ring clutch, restricting its rotation during
lateral pulls. As a result, lateral forces are transmitted directly to
the edges of the anchor instead of the concrete. The shear plate of
this Erection Anchor is positioned to resist shear loads for spall-
free rotation. No shear reinforcement is required.
Reinforcement
The stress caused by the shear lift of a thin panel is resisted by the shear plate.
While the panel is being rotated on its edge, the load can usually be factored by 0.5. During this phase
of the lift, the anchors are not bearing the full weight of the panel. The rated loads and minimum
panel thicknesses can be found in the accompanying table.
During rotation, it is recommended that the sling angle be perpendicular to the surface.
Once the panel has been rotated to vertical, the tension lift is initiated. During the tension phase of the
lift, the Erection Anchor with Shear Plate will work like the Spread Anchor or the Two Hole Anchor.
A glance at the accompanying table will show that there are two sets of data. If the higher loads are
desired, additional reinforcement should be placed through the lower hole of the anchor. Consult the
reinforcement charts for rebar length, diameter, and bend angle.

BRACES
MEADOW BURKE SUPER BI-POD
BI-POD BRACE INSTALLATION
1. Follow Bi-Pod Brace Assembly instructions for your style
of Bi-Pod, leaving the Upper brace or Extension out of the
center sleeve so the brace is in two pieces. To assist in
handling, tie the Bi-Pod legs to the lower brace with tie
wire (fig. 1).
2. Using two people, take the upper portion of the brace to the
panel and connect the shoe with a 19mm Burke Coil Bolt to
the Burke B-75 Coil Insert embedded in the panel (fig.2).
3. Using two people, take the lower portion of the brace to the
panel and insert its upper end into the sleeve and attach
with Bolts and Nuts.
4. Repeat this operation for the other braces on this panel.
5. Erect the panel being certain that the brace or Bi-Pod legs
do not strike the floor during the erection.
6. After the panel base is set in its final position and while the
crane is still balancing the panel, connect the shoe on the
lower end of the brace to the floor slab using a Burke Super
Bolt or 19mm coil bolt into an embedded Burke floor slab
insert (fig. 3).
7. Install a temporary support under the centre of the brace
length to maintain the brace straightness (fig. 4).
8. Disconnect the tie wire holding the Bi-Pod legs to the main
brace.
9. Rotate a Bi-Pod leg over to the wall about 1.52m from the
centreline of the brace and mark for an expansion anchor
drill hole (fig. 5).
10. Drill the hole and install the expansion anchor which
connects the Bi-Pod shoe to the wall.
11. Repeat steps 10 and 11 for the other Bi-Pod leg and then
remove the temporary support.
12. Repeat for other braces on the panel until the panel is
completely braced.
13. With all the bracing in place, the panel can now be plumbed
by turning the lower main pipe (fig. 6).

BRACE GUIDE
GUIDE FOR
TILT-UP WALL PANEL BRACING
KEEP THIS DATA ON FILE
The reason for producing this guide is to help Engineers, Architects and Contractors in selecting
suitable Tilt-Up temporary brace sizes when completing work shop drawings and panel layouts.
Advanced Building Systems has the largest stock of Tilt-Up braces. These braces are for hire and are
maintained by Advanced Building Systems in accordance with Australian Standard 3850.
Here are some bracing set out design recommendations.
1. Do not locate the wall brace inserts above the lifting inserts or the structural steel inserts, as the
braces will foul the rigging. Locate the wall brace inserts either under or to one side of the
lifting inserts.
2. Locate the wall brace inserts 900-1000mm from the sides of the wall panels.
3. Offset braces 300mm away from each other in the corners.
4. DO NOT BRACE one panel to another panel for structural support.
5. Brace angles can vary from 45° to 60° the ideal brace angle is 60° to the horizontal.
6. The vertical panel dimension for the wall brace calculation should be measured from the
finished floor level.
7. Check when setting out ground brace inserts, make sure the measurements are taken from the
inside face of the panel.
8. Whilst awaiting the installation of the roof steel make daily checks on the tightness of the coil
bolts connected to the panels and floor.
The following brace sizes are available ex-factory.
Any variation to these brace sizes requires:-
1. 4 days notice for assembly.
2. Assembly charge of $15.00 per brace plus the hire charge for the extension.

be needed ?
B. When panels have very wide openings. The strongback keeps
the panel from sagging under the opening.
C. When panels have slender legs, less than 178mm thick, where
the height of the leg divided by the width of the leg is less
than 0.12. A strongback is needed because the leg
cannot support the weight of the panel bearing on it during
lift. For legs 178mm and thicker often ties can be added
around the reinforcing to avoid strongbacks.
D. To avoid large amounts of added reinforcing. In certain
instances strongbacks are cheaper.
Using splice plates on 200mm channel allows a hinge to form
How to attach thereby reducing the capacity of the strongback, depending on
Strongbacks the location of the splice. So its important to know where to splice
properly a strongback.
1. Strongback Legs - We do not want the hinge to occur
between H/2 + 910mm above the Double Lift Plate (DBL).
H - is the distance from bottom of panel to DBL coil.
H/2 - 1/2 of that distance. If you have a notch that is 3.66m,
its 1/2 of 3.66m of 1.83 + 910mm = 2.74m.
2. Second condition is strongbacks spanning openings. We dont
want the splice to occur within 910mm above to 910mm below
the first strongback insert around the opening.

a guideline of some of the more common cases and does not cover all of
the many possible requirements for strongbacks.

Sloped Bottoms the panel. The three step conditions shown represent cases where
strongbacks may be required to provide support.
2. When the bottom of a panel slopes, strongback legs may be required
to ensure the panel lifts straight. As a general rule, if the slope of the
bottom end of the panel has a rise of 100mm or more per 3.0m of panel
width, strongback legs will be rquired. The following conditions are
common and will normally need strongback legs to lift.

with strongbacks for added strength.
Narrow As a guideline, any leg less than
610mm in width, whose width to
height ratio is less than 0.12, will
normally require a strongback
over its entire height.
2. For panel legs 178mm or
more thick, it may be possible to
eliminate the need for added
strongbacks by the addition of
added reinforcing steel, and ties
in a column pattern. In order for
this method to work, the
reinforcing steel must be detailed
with minimum concrete cover.
1. A non-reinforceable section is one in which reinforcing steel cannot be
Panels added to adequately resist the bending stresses created during the lifting
with non- process. This may result from many different conditions. The following are a
few typical cases.
reinforceable
sections
a. If the existing structural reinforcing steel is placed too deep in the panel to
be used to resist the erection stresses, and the structural engineer will not move
the steel closer to the surface, there may not be sufficient room to add additional
erection reinforcing at the required clearances.
b. Deep reveals do not allow placement of the reinforcing steel close enough
to the smooth surface of the panel between the reveals to prevent visible
cracking. While it may be possible to place the reinforcing steel close enough to
the reveals to prevent deep cracking within them, the depth of the reinforcing
steel in the smooth areas between reveals, will result in cracks that go deep
enough into the panel surface to still be visible after the panel is erected.
c. Sections of some panels can be subjected to such high bending stresses
that it is impossible to fit enough reinforcing steel in the sections to prevent
visible cracks from occuring.
2. If the insert spacings cannot be adjusted to reduce the concrete bending
stresses and eliminate the need for the reinforcing steel, the only option may be
to use external strongbacks to resist the erection stesses.

CRACK INDUCERS
FASTER! EASIER! BETTER! CHEAPER!
The EASY-T plastic joint former and crack inducer consists
of two sections; an arrow shaped section which locks into the
concrete, forming the joint and a top section which facilitates
handling and placing - this is removed after firming of the
concrete surface.
FINISH:
n Joints can be formed right up to walls, columns and
isolation joints, producing a clear, neat finish. Tooled
joints and saw cuts are eliminated.
n No need for joint sealants.
n The EASY-T joint is ideal for heavy point loads such as
fork lifts.
LENGTHS:
The EASY-T strip is supplied in 3 metre lengths and can be
adapted to any length joint, without wastage, by overlapping
the upper section.
DEPTHS:
The suggested proportion of strip to concrete depth is 1:4 to a
maximum of 1:5. EASY-T is available in depths of 25mm,
38mm, 50mm and 65mm.
