Message from Our Bishop
Dear Friends in Christ,
Area Day 2010 was a great event as we explored the theme of Water and Travelling
Together with God. There is a vibrant energy and delight when Trent-Durham Anglicans
gather together for learning & worship! I hope you will join us for our 2011 Area Day. Our
theme will be The Tapestry of Life: Bringing the Threads Together.
Come on Saturday, March 5, 2011 to St. Peter’s, Cobourg for a day of worship &
learning. Come with a team from your parish and sample the wide variety of workshops
that will help us weave the threads together. We will have a weaver weaving something
wonderful for the Closing Service. Workshops include: Labyrinth-Walking, Celtic
Spirituality, Spiritual Direction, Connecting to the Internet, Bible Study, Messy Church,
Friendship Evangelism, Affirmative Prayer, Visioning and more.
A concurrent program for children ages 4 - 9 and teens aged 10 – 17 is offered!
I look forward to seeing you on March 5th.
Blessings,
The Rt. Rev. Linda Nicholls
Area Bishop of Trent-Durham
Area Day 2011 Theme
It is the uniqueness of each thread that creates a tapestry. We weave our life’s
tapestry from a place deep within our hearts. The desire to create calls us. The colours
please us, the textures warm us, the snags and broken threads grieve us. God, our Master
Weaver, has put in place the desire, the vision, and the patterns with which to weave a
faith-filled life. We pick up the threads we are given and with his guidance hope to weave a
life of colour, pattern and texture, celebrating life in Him. We begin with faith but must add
skills, patterns, even a framework in which to create our tapestry the way we wish it to be.
Creating the design, connecting the pattern, coping with loose or broken threads, we need
the support of fellow weavers to help, encourage and praise. Thus, individual tapestries
become part of the Tapestry of Life – His Creation and Blessing.
Our workshops this year reflect this gathering of threads to create our life’s tapestry.
We hope the day will be an inspiration and encouragement to you all.

Workshops A1- A10 (10 -11am)
(Participants are requested to select ONE workshop from each of the three sessions A, B, & C)
A1 Words to Live By – Weaving God’s story and yours together
Bishop Linda Nicholls is in her third year as Bishop of Trent-Durham.
The Bible is central to our faith. We need to ‘read, mark, learn and inwardly digest’
the scriptures. We will engage in a practical model for study of the New Testament.
Bring a bible and come willing to share in small groups.
A2 Joy-filled Service - Volunteer Management
Heather Steeves is the Congregational Development and Volunteer Management Consultant in the
Diocese of Toronto and has been a manager of volunteers for over 20 years.
Congregational lay ministry, a.k.a. volunteer management, is key to congregational
success today. Does the position you hold in your congregation bring you and
others joy? Do you love telling others about it and what you are accomplishing? Is
that possible? Come, let’s imagine and discuss how to make this a reality.
A3 Messy Church
Ruth Delaney and Peter Bowman are part of the team that leads Messy Church at Christ Memorial
Church, Oshawa.
We're not talking about polishing pews twice a year; we're talking about
connecting. It is our attempt to be church for families who want to meet Jesus and
bring up their children as Christians, but are unable to fit a traditional Sunday
morning service into their busy lives. We will share our story of how God is leading
us with Messy Church.
A4 Learning to Pray with Others
The Rev. Canon Anne Moore is a member of the national board of the Anglican Fellowship of Prayer
and the Diocesan Committee of AFP, and previously a shy, timid, scared pray-er.
Are you afraid to pray out loud? Do you envy those who pray long, beautiful
prayers? You are not alone! This workshop will teach you a very simple, step-by-
step method which will turn shy, scared mumblers into confident pray-ers. And then
you will be able to teach your friends.
A5 Simple & Profound: Drawing Celtic Knots with Easy Dots and Lines
Brian Dench (MDiv) is former President of the Calligraphic Arts Guild of Toronto
and author of “The Knotty Book”.
This how-to doodle method has you weaving Celtic knotwork in minutes -
guaranteed! It is meditative, and reveals why the art and architecture of church
history saw spiritual depth in the pattern. Please bring paper and black point-tip
marker.
5
A6 Singing the Lord’s Song in a Strange Land
The Rev. Bryan Beveridge is the Incumbent of St. Peter’s, Cobourg.
One of the principal challenges facing the church in these days is how to sing “our
song” in a strange land. We will look at small town rural and large town ministry
and what recent research suggests about how we may better be heard.
A7 Getting the Passion Back: Spirituality in Your Parish
Bill Bickle is the Canadian National Partner for Natural Church Development (NCD) and works with
over 300 churches in 46 denominations across the country. He has held key positions in the church
and worships at St. John’s, Port Hope.
More Anglican parishes in Canada struggle with Passionate Spirituality than all the
other 7 Quality Characteristics of Healthy Churches. This workshop will be ideal,
whether your parish is dealing with Passionate Spirituality or you just want to know
more about how you and others most naturally connect with God - and how that
drives passion or purpose.
A8 Friendship Evangelism
The Rev. Michael Calderwood is Incumbent of St. Paul’s, Brighton and works with committees such as
Back To Church Sunday and Fresh Expressions.
Ever get the sense that God is working through your friendships in order to share
the gospel? Ever look at your neighbours and think they might benefit from going to
church? Do Anglicans really do this sort of thing? Discussion will include connecting
this with Back to Church Sunday and some of John Bowen’s work on Evangelism for
Normal People.
A9 Putting Faith and Belief into Action!
Kim Lauder is the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Northumberland with more
than 20 years experience working with not-for-profit organizations.
Do you want to make a difference in people’s lives in your community by putting
your faith and belief into action? Kim will share the Habitat for Humanity model and
the ways in which Habitat makes a difference in both the community and a family’s
life. You could be the person that gives other people a hand up!
A10 Living in Right Relationships
Trent Durham Ambassadors of Reconciliation will lead the workshop. They are Bob Fenton, Dee
Fenton, Lois Brennan, Shelly Wild, Brian Stonehouse, Adele Finney and the Rev. Frank Tyrrell.
The work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the history of the
Residential School Program will be shared. The mandate of the Commission is to ensure that
every church member has knowledge of the history of the Indian Residential School System,
communicates the role of ordinary citizens and encourages Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal
church members to actively work together to build right relationships with each other.
Workshops B1- B10 (11:15am -12:15pm)
(Participants are requested to select ONE workshop from each of the three sessions A, B, & C)
B1 The History of Old Testament Israel Made Easy
Pat Paulsen is a retired Audiologist and husband of the Rev. Judy Paulsen, Incumbent of
Christ Memorial Church, Oshawa.
Many people are (understandably) confused and intimidated by the complexity and
length of the Old Testament story of Israel. Where do the Kings/Prophets/Judges/
Patriarchs fit in? Let's learn to see this story as a story rather than as a collage of
confusing and overlapping images. You'll be surprised at how easy it can be and
you'll never read the Old Testament the same way again!
B2 Sunday Schools for Small Churches
The Rev. Michael Calderwood is the Incumbent of St. Paul’s, Brighton.
Remember the days when your parish Sunday School boasted 100 children and
there were big Christmas pageants? But things have changed. In many of our small
churches, it is hard to get teachers and the attendance of children is sporadic. St.
Paul’s, Brighton, has been experimenting with new ways to do Christian Education
for children. Come and share ideas about Sunday Schools for small churches - the
challenges and the blessings!
B3 Cops and Clerics – Building a Community
The Rev. Michelle Childs is the Incumbent of St. John’s, Weston.
Cops & Clerics is a multifaith & ecumenical initiative in cooperation with Division 12
in West Toronto to help build community relationships. Michelle will share her
experience working with the police and the community by walking the streets to
help build safe, friendly communities.
B4 Labyrinth - A Way to Wholeness
Marilyn Metcalfe, an active member of St. George's, Pickering Village, is involved in prayer
ministry, including Lay Reading, Lay Anointing, Christian Meditation, Pastoral Care and
Labyrinth-Walking.
Walk or trace the sacred path of the labyrinth as a form of prayer with our whole
being. Discover how this ancient spiritual practice has been followed by Christians
over the centuries as a tool to guide healing, deepen self-knowledge, gain peace or
ignite creativity on an inward journey toward God.

B5 Listening with the Ears of Your Heart - The Prayer of Lexio Divina
Deb Chapman is a Pastoral Associate and Pastoral Counsellor at St. Nicholas, Birch Cliff.
She loves Benedictine Spirituality and in particular, "Lexio Divina".
This workshop will help you incorporate "Lexio Divina" into your prayer life. This
form of prayer is like experiencing a direct message from God's heart to yours. As St.
Benedict knew, it can lead to a deeper relationship with God...
B6 Spiritual Direction: Guidance for the Journey
The Rev. Beth Wagschal is a Spiritual Director, Retreat Leader and retired Lutheran priest in
the Trent Durham area.
What is spiritual direction? Who is it for? Why do people come for it? What does it
do? What doesn’t it do? We will discuss these and other aspects of direction. Come
with your questions and your interest!
B7 Small Church Visioning - “Home-Grown”
A team from St. Mark’s, Port Hope will present their visioning process.
Coming to a vision for a parish is not a process of ‘one size fits all’. In a small-town
church, the connections that members have are every day and in many places.
Building on that local connection, we will describe how our church developed and
carried out a process of visioning about the future starting from home base.
B8 The Ministry of Presence - Reaching Troubled and Not-So-Troubled Teens
Rev. Jeff Snow, an ordained minister with the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada, has been
on staff with Northumberland Youth for Christ for ten years. Andrew Fortier has been on
staff with Northumberland Youth for Christ for four years and attends St. Paul's, Brighton.
Every church wants to reach out to young people. Often we try and do it with
attractive events and programs, which are all well and good. But have these
attempts to reach youth been successful? We will look at reaching out to youth
through our "presence" – kind of like how Jesus reaches out to us! Come ready to
ask questions and share experiences as we learn together.
B9 Changing Your World: Starting at Your Doorstep
Christian Harvey is the Trent Durham Youth Social Justice Coordinator and the Youth Worker
at St. John’s, Peterborough. He will be assisted by friends.
A workshop to explore practical, step-by-step ways that Anglicans in small
communities can work with low-income and marginalized people around issues they
face. Examples will include the work of church members, including youth, serving
their community around food needs and using art.
10
B10 Frayed Threads in the Tapestry: The Experience of Grief
The Rev. Donald Shields is the Assistant Curate at Grace Church, Markham and
Chaplain/Coordinator of Spiritual & Religious Care at Markham Stouffville Hospital.
At any one moment, numerous members of any parish are somewhere along grief’s
continuum. These losses can range from health, employment, housing, a marriage
or relationship, or the death of a loved one. How do we support one another on this
journey? What role can faith play? How can we respond as a healing presence? Don
will facilitate, through story and theory, a pastoral response to loss and grief.
Workshops C1 – C10 (1-2pm)
(Participants are requested to select ONE workshop from each of the three sessions A, B, & C)
C1 Words to Live By – Weaving God’s story and yours together
Bishop Linda Nicholls is in her third year as Bishop of Trent-Durham.
The Bible is central to our faith. We need to ‘read, mark, learn and inwardly digest’
the scriptures. We will engage in a practical model for study of the New Testament.
Bring a bible and come willing to share in small groups.
C2 Music for Small Congregations
Doug Cowling is the Director of Music at St. Philip’s Church, Etobicoke. He is a speaker, consultant and
leader of workshops in church music. He is co-author of two pieces of music and writer of four Juno
Award-winning productions.
This practical workshop will examine fresh approaches to enriching and
empowering the voice of your congregation. Reconsider your model for musical
leadership and learn to recognize the talents you already have. Explore diverse
music from the global church, Taizé and Iona, and both contemporary and
traditional styles. Bring an instrument!
C3 Weaving the Church into the Net
Brian Dench is a communications designer, webmaster for several parishes, and a Trinity
graduate (MDiv).
The reformation triggered by communications technology means instant cheap
power - everyone can “netcast” to the world, eroding traditional controls over
information. We will explore the challenges and possibilities of re-weaving church
& parish into the fabric of this revolution.
11
C4 Affirmative Prayer
The Rev. Joan Waters-Garner, an ordained priest for twenty-eight years, is now retired and
serves as Music Director and Honorary Assistant at St. Nicholas, Birch Cliff. She occasionally
conducts retreats and quiet days.
Do you notice how the threads of life's tapestry change when interwoven with
threads of prayer? Affirmative Prayer not only highlights and enhances your life
patterns, but often reveals new ones. This introductory workshop will include
brief experiential sessions, take-home resources, and a website referral.
C5 The Celtic Way: Weaving a Spirituality of Place
The Venerable Gordon Finney is the Archdeacon of Trent Durham and the Incumbent of St. John the
Evangelist, Peterborough.
Rooted in the Trinity, Celtic Christianity has a great deal to offer to our age. It helps
us to see God in the wind, the sea, the hills, the streams and the animals, and invites
us to see life as a pilgrimage. Along the way, we encounter "thin places" where the
holy is encountered in simple things.
C6 Finding God through Creativity
Susan Lago is a Port Hope resident and owner of Blue Cheese Pottery.
We will explore the possibility of finding God through acts of creativity in everyday
life. Through demonstration, participation and discussion, participants will explore
the contemplative, meditative and spiritual nature of the arts. Come and play in the
clay!
C7 Growing Churches Naturally
Bill Bickle is the Canadian National Partner for Natural Church Development (NCD) and
works with over 300 churches in 46 denominations across the country. He has held key
positions in the church and worships at St. John’s, Port Hope.
This workshop will cover the research, organic growth principles and Biblical support
for the NCD Survey and why it is being used in over 50,000 churches around the
globe, and in nearly 100 parishes in the Diocese of Toronto. Discover how the NCD
Survey tool and processes can enhance the work of your parish.
C8 Book Club in a Pub!
The Rev. Christopher Greaves is the Incumbent of St. John’s, Bowmanville.
We’re not experts but we love reading. By enjoying a monthly get-together at Book
Club, we have an opportunity to expand our horizons, regale one another with great
stories and tuck into a hearty lunch. We are reading fiction and non-fiction books
that we never would have read. Come and learn how our book club started and join
in the conversation.
12
C9 My Parish Shaped for Mission? Petrifying or Possible?
The Rev. Jenny Andison is the Archbishop's Officer for Mission for the Diocese and the
Associate Priest for Church Development, St. Paul's, Bloor Street.
We will begin to explore what a mission-shaped parish might look like, regardless of
size or theological and liturgical background. What are the priorities and passions of
people in a mission-shaped parish? How might a parish take some first steps
towards responding to God's call to mission in their local neighborhood? We will
also discuss some of the pitfalls that might arise on this journey.
C10 Let Go & Let God be your Master Weaver
The Rev. Edward Cachia is the Associate Priest of St. Peter’s, Cobourg, now an Anglican
priest after 20 years as a Roman Catholic priest.
Where do you go when the road comes to an end? Father Ed will share his painful
journey in which God led him to a new life ….You will be invited to share your stories
of how God intervened in your life when everything seemed to be lost.
A Book Table from Augsburg Fortress Canada
will be available in the main hallway
from 8:30am until after lunch.
Cash, cheques, VISA and MASTERCARD
may be used to make purchases.
13
Children’s Program – Ages 4 – 9
The Children’s Centre will be open at 8:30am for children to be dropped off by
their parents and to meet their Workshop Leader, Jan Stapleton. Children will
stay in the centre during the lunch break; however, parents are more than
welcome to join their children for lunch.
At 2:15pm, following the last workshop, the children will be brought down to the
Great Hall. Parents are asked to reunite with their children at this point and
encouraged to attend the Celebration Eucharist in the church.
On Area Day, the children will follow the same theme as the adults. During the
day we will have conversation circles, crafts, theme-related stories and some free
time to ‘play’ with the many bible-based story baskets the children have access
to here on a regular basis. We will be talking about their life experiences, what
illuminates them and how we as God’s people grow our faith and show God’s
light in the world. Prayer, filling our hearts and minds with good things,
wonderment, making choices, gathering together, outreach and reaching out will
be part of the learning. As always, our intention is a little learning and FUN.
