      (1) The evolution of the causes of World War I.


      According to the textbook authors, Colonel Edward M. House went on a fact

finding mission and found tensions were rising with in the European nations. Kaiser

Wilhelm wanted a world empire just as Britain and France had. With England, France

and Russian in a treaty and Germany, Turkey and Austria-Hungary in one as well,

tensions would soon to build. After the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, the U.S.

remained neutral. With the U.S. still shipping goods to the Germans, Allied forces

started putting pressure on President Wilson. With the introduction of U-boats, things

started to get worse. Sinking passenger ships at the loss of American lives was starting

to strangle relations with Germany and the U.S. In April of 1916 Wilson sent an

ultimatum to Germany that “unless the Germans immediately called off attacks on cargo

and passenger ships, the United states would sever relations” (Brands, 2009, pg. 658).
