D uring April, Sasbo wrote to Nedcor pointing out that the group’s maternity leave conditions were inferior to those of the other major banking groups and suggested improvements. To its credit, Nedcor got the message and has Sasbo News Nov/Dec 2000 up-graded its maternity leave conditions in line with Sasbo’s recommendations. Its scheme is now one of the best in the industry. Significant features of the new conditions are the improvements to the maternity leave allowances for female employees with more than three years’ service, and the provisions for miscarriages and stillborn births. Its new maternity conditions, which will come into effect from February 1 after the bank’s administrative software has been upgraded to accommodate the changes, are: • 0 –1 year’s service, still no benefit. • 1 to 3 years’ service, 15 % of pay plus the 45% UIF payout for four months. Employees not on UIF will receive 60% of their pay over the same period. • Women with 3 years’ service and over will be paid 75% of salary for four months, i.e. 30% from Nedcor plus the 45% UIF payout. This is a 15% improvement on the previous provision. • Women not contributing to UIF will receive the full 75% payment from the bank. • Women who suffer miscarriages in their first or second trimester will be granted sick leave as prescribed by their medical practitioner. • Women who suffer miscarriages in the 3rd trimester (after the 26th week of pregnancy) or stillborn births will be granted six weeks’ maternity leave on full pay from the time of the event. “These achievements were thanks exclusively to Sasbo,” Eugene Ebersohn told Sasbo News. Pointing out that no other union or staff association can match Sasbo’s exposure to the finance industry, he said: “Sasbo’s 30 different recognition agreements enable us to compare conditions at the various institutions. “Nedcor employees realise the value of belonging to a well- resourced, professional and representative trade union. Sasbo increased its Nedcor membership by 18% over the past nine months and we expect this trend to continue in the new year,” says Eugene. 16 - Sasbo News/Nuus November/December, 2000 Sasbo News/Nuus November/December, 2000 - 5 BEACONS FOR 21ST CENTURY UNIONS tory core courses, aspirations. based study materials information on existing efficiency and flexi- to become consul- from page 11 Consequently, in Aug- Background to the FNB APESMA’s pro- Renewal: APESMA used in distance programmes. bility,’ the APESMA tants.’ ust 1999 APESMA FNB pay dispute grammes offer a regularly surveys education.
