                                 NutriCal® Technical Guide
                                 I. Background Information
NutriCal® – Calcium Supplement for cows at calving was developed
on the basis of research published in the Journal of Dairy Science.
USDA researchers discovered that both calcium chloride and calcium
propionate (ingredients of NutriCal®) are effective for preventing clinical
and subclinical milk fever cases. The NutriCal® dosage of 600-800 mls
provides 75-100 grams of calcium per treatment, similar to the research
                                        protocol.

Hoard’s Dairyman magazine (Gieger, 1996) cited that milk fever cases cost
an average of $340 USD/day ($500 CDN), not to mention secondary
problems that often develop. We believe that, by using NutriCal® for milk
fever prevention, dairy producers will easily gain a positive return on their
investment, as well as peace of mind.

“Both Calcium Chloride and Calcium Propionate are
University tested and proven to be effective in preventing
Milk Fever in cows at calving.”

                                    A. NutriCal®
                                    1) Drench form of Calcium Chloride/Propionate has been proven to be
absorbed more efficiently compared to pastes/gels.

                                    2) NutriCal® was the first drench on the market to contain both Calcium
                                       Chloride/Propionate.
                                    3) Manufacturers are commited to keeping NutriCal® cost competative
compared to similar products throughout North America.
                                    4) Calulated return on invesment = [6% (less milk fever) x $500 CDN (avg. cost
per milk fever case) ÷ $10 (cost of NutriCal administration)] = 3:1

                                    B. The “Easy Drencher”
                                    1) Easy-grip handle
                                    2) 1 litre capacity marked in 100ml graduations
                                    3) 12cm plastic spout designed to allow animal some control of liquid flow
                                    4) Wide neck opening for easy mixing of dry or liquid remedies
                                    5) Eliminate use of dangerous glass bottles.

                                                              Apply the
                                         Easy Drencher spout between
                                         the cheek and teeth during
                                         administration. This allows the
                                         cow to swallow and prevents
                                         the chance of causing
                                         aspiration pneumonia via
                                         inhalation of NutriCal®

                                 III. Benefits of NutriCal®
Why Should you recommend the use of NutriCal® as part of a calving
                                     management program?

                                     1) To reduce the costly incidence of milk fever and secondary metabolic
                                        problems.
                                     2) To reduce cases of subclinical milk fever and, as a result, increase DMI
and milk production of fresh cows.
                                     3) It contains calcium chloride for quick release of calcium.
                                     4) It contains calcium propionate for extra energy and sustained release
                                        of calcium.

                                     5) The combination of calcium chloride and calcium propionate is less
                                        caustic than calcium chloride alone.
                                     6) It is easy to administer using the easy drencher.
                                     7) It is economical.

To use NutriCal® as part of a calving management program:

                                     1) Treat all mature cows with a 600-800 ml dose after calving.
                                     2) If cases of clinical milk fever arise, then NutriCal® treatment should be
                                        continued along with i.v.
                                        calcium treatment (be sure
                                        to consult your veterinarian)
                                     3) Do not administer more than
                                        2 doses of NutriCal® within
                                        a 24 hr. period.
                                     4) Do not administer to downer
                                        cows.
                                     5) To administer, place easy
                                        drencher between cheek
                                        and teeth.
