Welcome to Rotor Ops Flight Training
It is our pleasure to introduce you to Rotor Ops. We specialise in helicopter flight training
from our new facilities at Grand Central Airport, and offer students professional flight
training at competitive, market-related prices.

Ab-initio training is conducted on the world-renowned Robinson R22 Beta II helicopter. This
two-seater, piston-engine helicopter has become world famous for its versatility both as a
trainer, but also in game capturing and photography applications.

Current legislation dictates a MINIMUM OF FIFTY (50) flying hours before the issuing of a
Private Pilot Licence (PPL) is allowed. This figure might, however, be more based on
individual progress. Legislation furthermore requires that 35 hours must be dual instruction
(i.e. with an instructor) and at least 15 hours solo flying, of which at least 5 hours must be
cross-country flying time.

Students must hold a Student Pilot Licence (SPL) before flying solo, for which the following is
required:
•     An official notification of a passed flight medical examination;
• Sufficient flying instruction experience as determined by the Chief Flight Instructor
      (minimum 15 hours);
• Passed both the R22 and/or R44 Technical- and Pre-solo examinations; and
• Completed Part 61 paperwork formalities as required by the South African Civil
Aviation Authority of South Africa (SA CAA).

Rotor Ops Flight Training has access to a list of designated Flight Medical Examiners (FME).
Booking is essential and should be made in advance with the FME. Our advice to new
students is to complete the medical examination before commencing flight training,
although it is not a legal requirement to complete a flight medical examination PRIOR to
commencing flight training.

Once enrolled at Rotor Ops Flight Training, a file containing all the student’s details will be
kept for immediate reference. Included in this file will be a record of all flying and ground
school experience, as well as personal details for official purposes only.

All training is scheduled around the students’ requirements. The ground school and flight
instruction takes place concurrently, according to a Flight Training Syllabus. It is important
for students to adhere to this syllabus, especially during the first 15 hours of ab-initio
training. The cost of the ground lectures is included in the flight training component and is
structured to equip the prospective student with sufficient reference material to obtain the
required level of knowledge. Individual ground school theory for exercises 1, 2 and 3 are
charged at R450.00 per hour.

Typical course duration, should you be able to attend three times a week, is approximately
four months. It is however possible to obtain your PPL within five to six weeks on a full-time
basis. Pilots holding an aeroplane licence or other flying experience should be able to
accelerate their progress. It is important to note that in all cases the flying period includes a
ground lecture period of approximately 30 minutes. Students should therefore plan on a
session of approximately 2 hours for each flying session booked. A 48-hour notice period is
required from students should they not be able to attend a booked flying session. A late
cancellation fee of R650.00 (excl. VAT) will be payable if a booking is cancelled within the
stipulated 48-hour period or a "no-show" situation arises. All students are advised that
payment for any form of training is strictly COD. The ideal situation is for a credit amount of
at least R10 000 to be paid in advance with Rotor Ops, which is then constantly topped up in
order to ensure a credit balance at ALL times.

In addition to the ground lectures, students would need to attend at least 7 ground school
lectures for theoretical PPL computer based examinations. These lectures are charged at
R650.00 per ground school lecture. In addition a Restricted Radio Licence course will be
arranged at the students own cost. This is conducted at Rotor Ops and forms an integral
part of the entire syllabus. The requisite final PPL (H) examinations are conducted at SA CAA
based in Midrand, 10 minutes from our premises.

Owners wishing to train on their own aircraft are most welcome, although certain provisions
will apply. Students furthermore have the option of including a turbine helicopter
conversion on the Bell Jet Ranger into the initial flight-training syllabus.
Please contact Bernard Ubbink for more information in this regard.

We look forward to seeing you onboard with Rotor Ops soon.
