The MSc in Environmental Biogeochemistry is a one-year full-time programme
and can also be studied part-time by taking block modules. The course equips
graduates from diverse science backgrounds with the skills, knowledge and
understanding necessary for successful careers as technically aware scientists in
the environmental industry. With its large hands-on component, the course also
forms an excellent introduction to environmental geochemical research.
Specifically, you will learn about:
• The low-temperature biogeochemistry of waters, soils and sediments
• The origins, toxicity and fates of environmental pollutants
• The management of environmental pollutants using biogeochemical tools
• Modern techniques for the analysis of environmental materials
The fundamental role of microorganisms in catalysing low temperature geochemical
reactions is highlighted, as are the techniques by which microorganisms and their
activities are studied.
The course consists of two parts: a taught component and research project
The taught component begins by addressing the key concepts of low-temperature
geochemistry and of environmental microbiology. As the course progresses, pollutant
behaviour is considered, and you develop practical skills through a comprehensive
series of classes focussing on real sites of biogeochemical interest. Further modules
introduce the mechanisms by which microbes degrade organic pollutants, address
contaminated land and groundwater geochemistry and demonstrate current
approaches to pollution control.
The research project allows you to use the skills and knowledge gained in the taught
part of the course. Projects may be laboratory based, or may involve modelling or desk
studies. You may work within one of our research groups, or you might work elsewhere
in collaboration with another industrial or academic partner. Many past MSc students
have been successful in publishing their project work.
The course is supported by NERC studentships, and UK students with first class, 2:1 or 2:2
degrees can usually expect to receive full or partial funding (NERC support is never less than
50% of a full grant).
