Work Experience

Freelance and Consultancy, January 2009 – current (security cleared)
I’ve spent this time working freelance for several companies:
 created a Fund Management web application for the IMA (the trade body for the UK's £3,400 billion
asset management industry) to import, collate and produce industry fund statistics
 performed on-going support for BP Alternative Energy in the UK and US
 provided a web application, hosting and data analysis for John Menzies Digital
 written a mobile phone management system for Arrow Communications
 extended a system that required security clearance
 further developed FatFingers.com and migrated the application to run on Amazon’s EC2 cloud
 written FatFingers for iPhone application (iTunes App Store link: http://bit.ly/iPhoneFF). Both
the web and iPhone applications make use of the eBay API and are certified by eBay.
 Developed two other iPhone applications

BP Alternative Energy, January 2007 – December 2008 (Contract)
During the first year, I designed and built a Health and Safety Management Information Portal using MOSS
(SharePoint 2007). This system extracts data from three external systems and provides powerful mapping
(IDV and Virtual Earth), reporting (custom written webparts) and dashboard information (Dundas Chart and
Gauge). Many custom webparts were created for this project to allow this MOSS based application the same
rich functionality of a bespoke web site, but with a far quicker development timeline.

In the second year, I designed and coded a system to import massive amounts of data from sensors on wind
turbines into a time series database, OSISoft’s PI System. This involved creating services to identify, prepare
and load incoming files via email or FTP. I also wrote two Excel VSTO add-ins to allow users to map
incoming data to wind turbine components and edit data inside the PI System. All code was in C# and
involved interfacing with SharePoint lists and the PI System.

In both projects I also acted as the Business Analyst, gathering user requirements, producing design
documentation, hosting weekly user reviews, weekly project reporting and gaining project sign-off. I was
part of the Vendor Selection process and worked alongside external consultancies.

Inter-Group, Royal Bank of Scotland, September 2005 – January 2007 (Contract)
Inter-Group offer a range of travel, medical and pet insurance products that are sold under various high
street brands including Churchill, LloydsTSB, Boots and Virgin.

I developed and maintained a range of external public websites, internal call centre applications and a
management information system that provided sales data to partner companies. These websites are built
according to RBS standards and required an independent KPMG security audit. The insurance systems
encompass quotes, payment processing, renewals, mid-term adjustments and policy document print runs.
Systems are mainly developed using ASP.Net (using VB.Net and C#) and SQL Server 2000 and 2005.

iMeta, June 2005 - August 2005 (Contract)
iMeta have recently launched a unique mobile phone top-up and rewards system for supermarkets in
Indonesia and employed me to complete the web-based part of this system and enhance the management
reporting capabilities. It involved C# and SQL Server development, data cleansing, data-warehousing and
Business Intelligence reporting. iMeta is a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner and I gained considerable
experience with new technologies, such as Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005.

BP, Global Productions Systems, April 2004 - May 2005 (Contract)
Initially I worked in a team that developed and enhanced a number of .Net / SQL Server based web
applications for the front and back office trading floors. This required the ability to pick new code up quickly
and produce high quality improvements within short timescales to assist traders.

Following this I moved into the Team Lead position for a major invoice processing system and was given the
task of extending the existing system for use in the Singapore and American markets with a team of
developers and business analysts. This was a technical role involving daily hands-on development.

This system was a multi-tiered C# application interfacing with several other internal systems, with an
intranet site allowing full approval and payment of invoices. An Internet view also offered trading partners
full visibility of the payment process. As it was a high profile international application in use 24 hours a day,
it required a high quality code base with dedicated support teams located round the world.
This project made good use of design patterns, automated build tools, NUnit tests and followed the XP
methodology.
BAE Systems, e-capability January 2003 – April 2004 (Contract)
Following the technical success of my previous project at BAE Systems, I transferred to a new unit to
develop a performance measurement portal for the repair of military equipment. The solution was based on
WebSphere Application Server and Portal, with Oracle Reports providing web based reports and PDF reports.

BAE Systems, Ventures November 2000 – December 2002 (Contract)
This contract was to design a next-generation asset/vehicle tracking system. The system was coded as
Enterprise Java Beans running under WebLogic, with ASP.Net.

Following the successful delivery of the system I moved from senior developer into the role of Team Lead
and the system was then developed further to provide integration into ordering, installation and financial
systems. However after 2 years, BAE Systems Ventures withdrew funding for this project.

TV Travel Shop September 2000 – October 2000 (Consultancy)
Working for the digital TV channel I was responsible for upgrading their SQL Server 7 back-end internal and
internet-based databases and enhancing client tools for placing holiday bookings. I was also involved with
another SQL Server 7 data warehousing project for The Body Shop.

The Body Shop/FosterCare August 2000 – September 2000 (Consultancy)
During this time I split my days working on two projects. I worked for The Body Shop, extending their SQL
Server based OLAP data warehousing and also developed a web-based foster-child placement.

Telsis May 2000 – July 2000 (Contract)
This contact was to develop a web-based front end for a telephony system using ASP, HTML, JavaScript,
MTS and SQL Server 7. It allowed service providers and subscribers to add and remove services for mobile
phone users.

William M Mercer February 2000 – May 2000 (Contract)
I was employed by this leading UK pension company to design and create an import, cleaning and export
system.

The Body Shop June 1999 – December 1999 (Contract)
I was employed to implement a Service Level Analysis data warehouse for despatched goods. This was built
using SQL Server 7 and MS OLAP

Bourne Consulting May 1999 (Contract)
Completing and enhancing multimedia training applications using Visual Basic and Access

ICL Travel Trade & Warrants Service October 1998 – April 1999 (Contract)
Initially assigned to the infrastructure, design and implementation team, my work included network design,
server allocation, client and server hardware configuration, SQL Server set-up, backup strategy, room layout
design and handover documentation. Subsequently I wrote VB 6 code for server and client applications.

DataBase Technologies Ltd July 1998 – October 1998 (Contract)
DataBase Technologies Ltd October 1996 – June 1998 (Permanent)
DataBase Technologies (DBT) is a database marketing company whose clients include several large
agricultural companies across Europe. My main role was to provide clients with complex analysis of their data
and present the findings in a clear and understandable format.

The Data Consultancy September 1994 – October 1996 (Permanent)
The Data Consultancy, since acquired by the MapInfo Corporation. I developed Drivetime which was
awarded MapInfo UK Application of the Year 1997 and was re-launched under the MapInfo brand name.

British Coal, Technical Services & Research Executive 1992 - 93 (Permanent)
British Coal employed me as a programmer and systems analyst in the Coal Preparation department to
debug and develop a Quality Management System that was used by Pit Managers to monitor coal output.
