PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT TASK FOR AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGY

1. INTRODUCTION

Schools will be informed of the list of projects (only one is given) at the beginning of the fourth term of
Grade 11 of each academic year to allow the teacher to do his/her planning in advance. Schools will choose
ONE option from those given.

The Practical Assessment Task in Grade 12 is externally set and moderated, but internally assessed. The
project is completed under controlled conditions and assessed by means of a marking/assessment rubric.

The PAT counts 25% of the total promotion mark (400) in Grade 12.

The learners should be familiarised with the assessment criteria before they start with the task.

The Practical Assessment Task counts 100 marks and consists of a design portfolio (25 marks), the
manufacturing processes (50 marks) and the final product (25 marks).

The learners must design and manufacture a GAS BRAAI or any other product that will be useful and
affordable to them, but still requires the necessary skills, for the 2011 PAT.

The project should be completed in the following TWO phases:

PHASE 1: DESIGN: Learners must identify the problem or need in their chosen project, investigate the
project, generate ideas and arrive at possible design solutions to make or produce, evaluate and
communicate the solution to the problem or need. The evidence of this phase will be located in the design
portfolio which will start in Term 1 of Grade 12 and continue to the end of January of the Grade 12 year.

PHASE 2: MANUFACTURING: Learners must construct the actual product or artefact from the beginning of
February in Term 1 and finalise it at the end of Term 3 of the Grade 12 year.

NOTE: Learners must submit the product or artefact for assessment by the end of the second term. The
accompanying planning done in phase 1 (design portfolio) must also be submitted for
            assessment at this time.

2. CRITERIA FOR ASSESSMENT

2.1 The criteria for assessing the Design Portfolio that counts 25 marks are:

 Analysis of problem
 Interrelationship between technology, society and the environment
 Ability to generate ideas
 Providing a solution
 Sketching (dimensions, welding symbols, scale, and projection symbol)
 Materials, tools and equipment
 General safety rules
 Cost calculations and material list
 Evidence of comparisons between different processes and skills
 Portfolio presentation

2.2 The criteria for assessment during the manufacturing of the product (face moderation) that
    counts 50 marks are:

 Safe handling and taking care of tools/equipment
 Skills related to the use and maintenance of tools and equipment
 Knowledge of materials to solve problems
 Application of different techniques and processes
 Skills demonstrated in the application of processes

2.3 The criteria for assessing the quality of the final product that counts 25 marks are:

 Addresses the problem/need. The product fulfills the purpose for which it has been designed and shows
innovation that is appropriate to the problem.
 Dimensions and measurements of the final product
 Appearance: Finishing off. This includes filing, grinding, sanding and painting.
 Functionality of the final product. Does it function properly?
 Time management. Is the product complete?

3. EXAMPLE PLAN

The following is just an example. If learners choose to design and make another product, they have to
compile a new material list for this specific design.

4. MATERIAL LIST

Grill plate
(a) Steel sheet 700 mm x 500 mm x 10 mm (any acceptable thickness)
(b) Flat bar 150 mm x 2 500 mm
(c) Round bar Ø12 mm x 400 mm

Frame
(a) 30 mm square tubing x 11 000 mm
(b) Cover plate 2 mm x 120 mm x 2 400 mm
(c) Base plate for pots: 2 mm x 300 mm x 500 mm
(d) 2 x wheels

Burners
12 mm square tubing x 300 mm

5. STEPS IN THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Step 1: FRAME
- Draw the frame, including cross members on a flat steel or concrete work surface.
- Lay the 30 mm tubing and cover plates on the drawing and mark it for length and angle cut.
- Cut the lengths accordingly and lay them back on the drawing. (TIP: Hold them with magnets.)
- Check that the joints fit closely without gaps.
- Tack-weld each joint. Check for squareness and complete the welds.
- Fit the wheels.
- Clean the welded joints.

Step 2: GRILL PLATE
- Cut the grill plate according to size.
- Weld flat bars at a vertical angle to the sides of the plate.
- Weld two round bar handles to the ends of the grill plate. (Any acceptable shape)
- Grind the welded area smooth with an angle grinder, if the weld is not smooth enough.
- Clean the welded joints.

Step 3: BURNERS
- Draw the frame of the burners, including positions for the upright burners, on a flat steel or concrete work
   surface.
- Lay the 12 mm tubing on the drawing and mark it for length and angle cut.
- Cut the lengths accordingly and lay them back on the drawing. (TIP: Hold them with magnets.)
- Check that the joints fit closely without gaps.
- Tack-weld each joint. Check for squareness and complete the welds using an oxy-acetylene welding set.
- Mark the position of the upright burners and drill 1 mm holes in the frame.
- Place the 70 mm square tubing pieces, with the V-shape cut, over the holes and weld them.
- Drill a 5 mm hole in the middle of one end of the burner frame and fit a connector for a gas pipe.
- Clean the welded joints.

Step 4
- Paint all areas, except the grill plate, with fire-resistant paint.
