                    PLAYGROUND DUTY POLICY

                                         Playground Duty Requirements
Be familiar with your areas and the rules that apply to each area. Active supervision of students during assigned duties is
critical to the good order and safety of the school and is an essential part of meeting your “duty of care” responsibilities.
Recess duties are 30 minutes in duration. Lunch duties are 20 minutes in duration. After school duties are 30 minutes in duration.
Fulltime teaching staff can expect to have a total of 60 minutes of duty in a week.
Each department within the school has been allocated to specific playground duty areas across the school. Heads of Department are
responsible for the allocation of duties with the allocated areas.
At Recess, the ovals and all sports courts (i.e. Areas 8, 9 and 10) are out-of-bounds. The oval side of the bitumin bike track and the
oval side of buildings that border the oval, such at the Performing Arts Centre and Music blocks, are also out of bounds at Recess.
PLAYGROUND DUTY GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
    •   Instruct students to pick up litter and place it in the bins provided.
    •   All ball sports (apart from handball) must take place on the oval and courts provided and during only Lunch A and B.
    •   All classrooms, including balconies and verandahs, are out-of-bounds to students.
    •   All student conduct is to be safe and sensible at all times. Students should not be running around buildings or on hard
        surfaces, throwing objects, or climbing on walkways, buildings or trees. All unsafe behaviour should be addressed
        immediately.
    •   Toilets in respective areas must be checked regularly.
SPECIFIC AREA REQUIREMENTS
CAR PARKS:       All car parks are out-of-bounds to students. Senior students who drive to and from school are not to be in the main
                 car park except at the beginning of the day when they arrive and the end of the day when they leave. Students must
                 leave their car keys with the Head of Department (Senior Student Well-Being) if they park on school grounds.
AREA 1:          Area around the main car park, sheds, demountable buildings and Performing Arts Centre. There should be
                 no students in the car park or congregating behind any of the buildings in this area. No students should be moving
                 beyond the Performing Arts Centre to the ovals at Recess.
AREA 2A:         Area around the Home Economics, First Year Centre, and Administration blocks. Students should not
                 congregate on the seats outside of the Administration block.
AREA 2B:         Year 8 Eating Area and paved area including deck around tree. Only Year 8 students should be sitting in the
                 allocated area. Students should be sitting on seats and not on tables. The Year 8 Coordinator will also visit this area
                 regularly.
AREA 2C:         Area around the Graphics, Industrial Skills, Art and Business Education blocks.
AREA 3A:         Tuckshop Area and Lines. Ensure that canteen lines are orderly and that students wait patiently in line. Teacher
                 attendance just prior to the bell for the beginning of Recess and Lunch A is essential.
AREA 3B:         Area between the Amenities block and Multi-Purpose Shelter including Toilets. This area contains the Year 10
                 eating area. Only Year 10 students should be sitting in the designated area. Students should be sitting on seats and
                 not on tables. Litter is of particular concern in this area and should be monitored carefully. The Year 10 Coordinator
                 will also visit this area regularly.
AREA 3C:         Year 11 Eating Area and paved area across to First Year Centre. Only Yr 11 students should be sitting in the
                 designated areas. Students should be sitting on seats and not on tables. Litter is of particular concern in this area
                 and should be monitored carefully. The Year 11 Coordinator will also visit this area regularly.
AREA 3D:         Year 9 Eating Area. Only Yr 9 students should be sitting in the designated areas. Students should be sitting on
                 seats and not on tables. Litter is of particular concern in this area and should be monitored carefully. The Year 9
                 Coordinator will also visit this area regularly.
AREA 3E:         Area around the Music blocks. This area includes the Year 12 eating area. Only Year 12 students should be sitting
                 in the designated area. Students should be sitting on seats and not on tables. Litter is of particular concern in this
                 area and should be monitored carefully. There should not be any students on the oval side of the Music blocks at
                 Recess. The Year 12 Coordinator will also visit this area regularly.
AREA 4:          Multi-Purpose Shelter. No food or drink is to be consumed in the MPS at any time. The stage area and climbing
                 walls are out-of-bounds. The only sporting activities permitted are handball and netball. Other activities may be
                 organised by the teacher on duty.
AREA 5:          Area around the Mathematics and demountable blocks and the bike compound. Students should not
                 congregate around the bike compound. The hill behind MT11/12 is out-of-bounds. There should not be any students
                 on the oval side of these blocks at Recess.
AREA 6A:    Area around the Library including the Quadrangle and the area towards the Humanities block. The
            quadrangle is a student sitting area only. No games or ball sports are permitted. All students using the library must
            be working quietly.
AREA 6B:    Area around the Communications and Science blocks and the rainforest area. The rainforest area and fence-
            line are out-of-bounds. The gate to Thuringowa Dr will remain locked until 3pm.
AREA 7:     Area around Humanities block including the Administration car park and the area towards the intersection of
            Hudson Street and Thuringowa Drive. Students need an Area 7 pass stuck on the back of their student
            identification card in order to access this area. No pass - no entry. Students in this area clearly visible from
            Thuringowa Drive and any misconduct should be reported so that offending students’ passes can be revoked. The
            Administration car park is out-of-bounds. Students should not be sitting on pathways in a manner that obstructs clear
            passage. All fence lines are out of bounds and gates will remain locked until 3pm.
AREA 8:     Cricket nets and surrounds. Students should only be in these areas if they are playing sport. Any students
            congregating or loitering in the area must be re-directed to other areas. Out of bounds areas of the rainforest need
            to be supervised closely.
AREA 9A:    Oval: Soccer Field. Food and drink are not permitted on the oval. Students using the oval must be engaged in
            physical activity and are not permitted to sit and congregate in groups.
AREA 9B:    Oval: Touch Field. Food and drink are not permitted on the oval. Students using the oval must be engaged in
            physical activity and are not permitted to sit and congregate in groups.
AREA 9C:    Oval: Rugby League Field. Food and drink are not permitted on the oval. Students using the oval must be engaged
            in physical activity and are not permitted to sit and congregate in groups.
AREA 9D:    Oval: End of Rugby League Field and Multi- Purpose Courts area. Food and drink are not permitted on the oval.
            Students using the oval must be engaged in physical activity and are not permitted to sit and congregate in groups.
            The fence-line is out-of-bounds at all times and students should not be moving past the oval towards Ridley Road or
            Thuringowa Drive. The Multi-Use Courts must be unlocked at the start of Lunch A and re-locked at the end of Lunch
            B.
AREA 10:    Swimming Pool. Students are not to enter the complex until the teacher on duty arrives. Only students participating
            in swimming activities may enter the complex. Students must have their swimming gear and a towel to gain access
            to the pool. They are not permitted to swim in any part of the school uniform.
AFTER SCHOOL:
AREA 11:    Bike compound. Supervise students’ collection of bikes and ensure their prompt and orderly departure.
AREA 12:    Hudson Street crossing opposite Lanark Street. Teachers must control the movement of students across the
            street, allowing students to move onto the crossing only when it is safe to do so. Do not stop traffic under any
            circumstances.
AREA 13:    Hudson Street crossing at the main car park exit opposite Malbon Road. Teachers must control the movement

            traffic under any circumstances. Remain at the crossing until most students leave and then move to the Hudson
            Street bus stop (13B) for remainder of the duty. Students are not allowed to run around or play games while
            waiting for buses.
AREA 14:    Thuringowa Drive bus stop – Ensure students line up single-file and in an orderly manner inside the fence. Control
            student movement onto buses, allowing through groups of six students at a time. Students are not to leave the
            grounds while waiting for the arrival of their bus. Be watchful for students gathering or loitering near the Thuringowa
            City Council offices and pass a message to a nearby staff room or to Administration if you note any suspicious or
            concerning behaviour.
AREA 15:    Thuringowa Drive signal-controlled crossing – The teacher is to control the button for the traffic signals. Ensure
            students do not pre-empt the changing of the traffic signals. Ensure that students walk their bikes across the road.
            Be aware that students may engage in dangerous behaviour when crossing the north-bound lanes which are blocked
            from sight by the metal barrier on the traffic island. Students who are waiting to catch buses should not leave the
            grounds or cross the road.
