● Participated in the Nordic Antarctic Research Programme (NARP) 1991/92 and the
Norwegian Antarctic Research Expedition (NARE) 1992/93.
● Leader for the oceanographic program during the Norwegian Antarctic Research Expedition
(NARE) 1996/97, the Swedish Antarctic Research Programme (SWEDARP) 1997/98 and the
Norwegian Antarctic Research Expedition (NARE) 2000/2001.
● Participated in one cruise to the Kara Sea in August/September 1995 on the Russian research
vessel RV Ivan Petrov.
● Participated in two cruises to the ice edge region in the central Barents Sea in May 1999 and
March 2000. In the March 2000 cruise I was cruise leader on the second half of the cruise
from 23 March to 2 April.
● In addition to this I have participated in numerous shorter cruises running sections from
Fugløya at the Norwegian Coast to Sørkapp at the southern tip of Spitsbergen. The Norwegian
Polar Institute did this section 13 times as one of our contributions to the VEINS project.
● Participated in the two cruises to the Fram Strait in 2002 and 2003.
● In 2005, 2006 and 2007 I was student supervisor on a cruise in the Fram Strait for the
University Center in Svalbard (UNIS).
Project leader experience
● I have been leading three oceanography programs on expeditions to Antarctica in the seasons
1996/97, 1997/98 and 2000/2001.
● I was project leader of a project funded by the Norwegian Research Council under the “Arktis
Lys og Varme” (ALV) program dealing with dense water production in Storfjord, Svalbard
(grant no 127802/720). Jurg Haarpaintner got his PhD degree from the work on of this
● From April 1998 to September 2000 I was the leader of the oceanographic group at NP.
● In 1998-2000 I was responsible for NP's contribution to the EU project VEINS.
● From 2003-present I have been leading a group of 3 oceanographers here at NP that work on
simplified modeling and eddy transports within the Nordic Seas and Arctic Ocean.
● I am currently leading the project “Fimbul Ice Shelf – top to bottom”, and was expedition
leader on the expedition to Fimbulisen, Antarctica, in the 2009/10 season.
