Attitudes to Science Survey Results

The responses to the Science Attitudes Survey can be categorised into four subsections plus an
overall result. The subsections are: Perception of Science, Relevance of Science to Self, Enjoyment
of Science and Environmental Actions.
Perception of Science
This area covers all aspects of science outside the classroom and in the wider world. A typical
Science causes many environmental problems.
Relevance of Science to Self
This section explores pupils' perceptions of how science relates to them, in particular when studying
science at school. A typical question is:

Enjoyment of Science
This area explores pupils' enjoyment of the science they are taught in school. A typical question is:
I look forward to doing experiments
This section includes pertinent questions about waste and the environment to assess what the
pupils have done recently with regard to actions generally considered good or bad for the
environment. A typical question is:
My empty cans always get recycled.
Overall Attitude to Science
Looking across all the questions, pupils from Fiction High School score an average of 40.5%
compared to a background level of 39.6%. The results are calculated as a percentage of the
maximum marks available. 50% is equivalent to a pupil giving the middle response for every
question (e.g. neither agree or disagree). The spread of the data is shown in more detail later.
Whole School Summary
The background statistics used in this section of the report are based on all pupils who have
completed the science attitudinal survey in 2008. No special consideration is given to the types of
schools surveyed, the pupils' background or the sex of the pupils in relation to the general school
population. The background is also not weighted to represent the male to female mix found in
Fiction High School. The background data may not be fully representative of all schools because the
schools participating are self selected.
The overall scores and sub scores are shown in the box and whisker plots below. For each set of
data, the middle 50% of pupils fall within the coloured box, which also shows the median line. The

I think science is important because it is good for I enjoy science most of the time. It is fun when I think it is really important for me to help the
children to learn about the science side of life we get to do experiments or go out side but it is environment as If we dont all do our bit the world
and to get to do things like experiments and not not really that fun when we have to just sit about we live in wont be that a great place. We should
have to do work all the time.Science is goood and listen to the teacher talking about it. It so all try and use less electricty and turn things off

i think that science is quite important as if we I do enjoy science as i enjoy doing experiments it is important to do your bit for helping the
