single credit.

Award of an HNC is gained on successful completion of 12
credits tailored to a course framework.

Award of an HND is gained on successful completion of 30
credits tailored to a course framework.

Candidates may decide to take a Higher National Unit as a stand
alone unit, or can use the unit to work towards a full HNC/HND
framework.

ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE

                                Open Learning is
                           a suitable method of
                           studying for me due to
                           family commitments
                           because I would have been
                           unable to attend evening
                           classes or attend the
                           College during the day.

                           I’m planning to study
                           an Accredited Chartered Certified Accountants
course once I complete my Open Learning work
and my place has just been secured on the
                           course.

This may not have been possible if the
opportunity had not been there to study through
the Open Learning department at Dumfries and
Galloway College and with all the support offered
by the staff. I’d highly recommend this method of
studying to anyone as there is always a member
of staff on the end of the phone to help with
                           studying problems.

                    I had a degree in
                Environmental Science and
was unable at the time to
get work in this field. I began
                looking at other options. I
                applied to Glasgow University
to do a PGDE. I was told that
                my English qualifications were
not high enough to get onto the
course. I was told I could bring
them up to scratch by doing the
Communications 4 module. I looked into this and my local
education provider did not do this course. I phoned Learn
Direct who put me in touch with Dumfries and Galloway
College. The staff were very friendly and put me at my ease.
As you can imagine I had a time limit to complete this
module. They put me in touch with the appropriate staff
member who devised a program of study for me to effectively
complete the course in the amount of time I had. I was
always able to speak to someone at the College if I was stuck
with anything which helped me greatly to know that I didn’t
have to struggle. It was all straight forward and easy. My
course work was sent directly to my home and my boss was
able to make sure I was doing my assessments completely
on my own. It was a great experience to go through. Thanks
to the help and understanding of the staff at Dumfries and
Galloway College they have made it possible for me to do my
PGDE and I am currently just over half way through it. Thanks
                to all who helped me.

primarily intended to prepare you for Event Driven programming
using Visual Basic. If you do have work experience of a high level

SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT: INTRODUCTION (Expires 31/07/10)
D77D 34 2 credits – HNC Option
Certification: SQA Certificate
Cost: £180

This unit is about developing an appreciation of the systems
development process. It will also introduce various techniques
used within systems analysis and design.
You will study several different systems development models in
order to describe their differences and explain what is involved
in a typical system development life cycle. You will also study the
techniques involved in setting up a systems development project
and gathering initial requirements. In order to assess this you will
be required to answer a number of questions in a closed book
assessment situation. These topics will be assessed by a number
of assignments based on case study material. Where possible,
the assignments will be open book but held in supervised
conditions.

                    Elise Tamburrini, Dumfries
I had a career break to
have my family and when I
decided to go back and get
                    new skills and qualifications, I
went to the College and found
                    out about Open Learning. It
was great for me to have the
flexibility to study when I had
time for it and at my own
                    pace, without the commitment

                                                                        EDUCATION STUDIES
to attend conventional classes at set times.

It was very productive, the contact is one to one
with my tutor. I strongly recommend anyone who is
                    considering learning to try it!

                                                      Hi, my name is Kennedy
Anderson. I am now doing my
                                                 second course through the Open
                                                 Learning unit with Dumfries and
                                                 Galloway College.
I studied Intermediate 1 Care first
                                                 and have now completed studying
Communication 3. I chose to study
by Open Learning as I work full time
and studying at night suits me perfectly. I can work at my
own pace and make arrangements to go to the College at
                           night to sit my assessments.

Open Learning is a very convenient way to study that will
suit people with limited amounts of free time, also you can
contact your tutor by phone or e-mail and get constructive
feedback to the work that you complete.

In the future I hope to change jobs and through studying
using the Open Learning method I can gain qualifications
at my own pace without having to give up my full time job.

I would recommend this method of study to anyone, due
to it being flexible and convenient. I left school 15 years
before starting my first course and was apprehensive
about doing any sort of study, but I soon got into the
swing of it and gained a B pass which I felt was a great
achievement and also a great confidence booster.

              Samantha Classick, Annan
                    Last year I undertook
               my Core 3 Maths and
passed due to the help and
               support I received from the
               staff and more importantly
               the tutors assigned to my
               course.

If this course had not been
available to me I would not
have been able to complete Core 3 Maths as
no other avenues would have been feasible as
a single mum with a young daughter. The only
time I had was a few hours each week to myself
which I used to achieve Core 3 Maths.

If Open Learning did not exist many unfulfilled
hopes and dreams would be the reality.
