                  Eikendal appoints Nico Grobler as winemaker

                  Celebrating three decades of dedicated winemaking, Eikendal, the prominent vaulted
                  cellar on the foot of the Helderberg in the Cape Winelands, has appointed a new
                  winemaker who is everything but a newcomer to the estate, Nico Grobler.

                  “Born and raised in Gauteng, I soon realised my destiny when my family relocated to
                  Stellenbosch in 1997 and I first laid eyes on the verdant Winelands. It was Eikendal who
                  first introduced me to the intrinsic aspects of quality vines and winemaking and today,
                  after four years working here, I can truly say that I know every square inch of vineyard on
                  the farm like the palm of my hand,” says Nico.

                  After matriculating from Stellenbosch High School, Nico followed his dream of becoming a
                  winemaker and completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture (BSc Agric)
                  specialising in Viticulture and Oenology at the University of Stellenbosch.

                  During his studies Nico cut his winemaking teeth at Eikendal where he did his harvest
                  practical and soon became a regular hand in both the vineyards and the cellar.

                  “A combination of destiny and good judgment brought me to the wine business and
                  ultimately to Eikendal. For me winemaking is not a job, but simply a passion put into
                  practice and I look forward to my new challenges as guardian of both the vineyards and
                  the cellar,” says Nico.

                  Fostering the philosophy of ‘quality wine is made in the vineyard’ Nico firmly believes that
                  Eikendal is situated in the country’s most premium pocket for producing exceptional
                  Chardonnay with strong regional and varietal integrity, showcasing the best
Eikendal cellar   characteristics of the cultivar. In addition Eikendal is positioned perfectly on the famed
                  ‘golden slopes’ of South Africa’s red wine production.

                   “My first challenge is to consolidate the Eikendal range focusing only on those wines we
                  are renowned for. I want to go back to basics, aiming for big Bordeaux-style reds that are
                  bold in structure with opulent fruit and flavour whilst our streamlined white wine
                  repertoire will be led by our wooded and unwooded Chardonnays,” explains Nico.

                  Eikendal maximises its perfect location on the foothills of the Helderberg and its proximity
                  to False Bay to produce great wines. The red varieties in particular, benefit from the cool
                  maritime conditions which allow slower optimal ripening of the grapes. The estate’s
                  flagship red wine is the elegant Classique – a classic Bordeaux-style, oak-matured blend of
                  Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

                                    From Friday the 23rd to Sunday, 25 October, Eikendal offers you the perfect retreat to
                                    escape the weekend rush with sublime Asian mouthfuls, skillfully prepared by the Thai
                                    masters of the popular Wang Thai and Simply Asia restaurants. Winemaker Nico Grobler
                                    and his team will add extra spice to this “To Thai For” experience when they haul out the
                                    latest cellar gems to reawaken the senses.

                                    Guests can indulge in a threesome of royal Thai dishes, ranging from R25 to R30 per
                                    serving, while Eikendal’s wine range will be available by the glass or bottle to be savoured
                                    at your table, inside or outside at the water’s edge. A free wine tasting of selected
                                    Eikendal wines will also be on offer in the cellar’s tasting lounge during this year’s festival
                                    which kicks off on the Thursday, 22 October.

   Thai chef hard at work           Similar to the all embracing style of Thai cuisine which offers an ‘explorasian’ of hot, sour,
                                    sweet, bitter and salty flavours in the mouth, Eikendal, has a wine to suit every palate and
                                    pocket. The estate is renowned for big Bordeaux-style reds, such as the classic flagship
                                    blend, Classique, which is bold in structure with smooth, yet opulent fruit, whilst the white
                                    wine repertoire is led by acclaimed wooded and unwooded Chardonnays.

                                    Fancy exotic stir fried prawns with a silky, rich Semillon or how about a hot red curry
                                    enjoyed with crisp Sauvignon Blanc? Then Eikendal is just the place for friends and family

                                   LANDSKROON NEW VINTAGE RELEASES:

                                                             Landskroon Chardonnay 2009 (unwooded)
                                   Cultivar
                                   100% Chardonnay
                                   Vinification
                                   Grapes were harvested during the cool of the day at 24°B, destalked and left on the skins
                                   for 7 hours. After pressing, the juice was allowed to settle overnight - the clean juice was
                                   separated and selected yeast added. Initial temperatures were controlled at around 15°C
                                   but towards the final stages of fermentation it was allowed to rise to approximately 18°C
                                   thereby facilitating optimum conditions for completion of the process. After clarification
                                   the wine was stabilised for protein and tartrates.
                                   Style
                                   The crisp fruit acid adds liveliness to this wine. Packed with rich lemony fruity and tropical
                                   flavours. Dry finish.
                                   Food
                                   Enjoy on its’ own or with chicken, various fish and shellfish dishes. Serve well chilled.
                                   Cellaring
                                   Up to two years. Best while young and fresh.
                                   Alcohol/Vol: 13.50                                Acidity:         5.9g/L

                                                              Landskroon Blanc de Noir 2009 (off-dry)
                                   Cultivar
                                   100 % Shiraz
                                   Vinification
                                   Grapes were harvested at 22.5 °B and juice obtained by subjecting the whole bunches to a
                                   gentle tank press. After allowing the juice to settle overnight the clean juice was
                                   separated and wine yeast added. The temperature during fermentation was maintained
                                   at 15°C. In order to obtain the desired sugar level for an off-dry wine, concentrated grape
                                   sugar was added. Protein stabilization was achieved with a bentonite fining where-after
                                   the wine was subjected to tartrate stabilisation at -2°C.
                                   Style
                                   A fresh fruity off-dry white wine made from red grapes. Lovely floral whiffs.
                                   Food
                                   Attractive on its’ own but also good company to snacks and light meals. Serve well chilled.
                                   Cellaring
                                   To be enjoyed while young and fresh.

                                   Amorim Cap Classique Challenge
                                   The Teddy Hall Blanc de blancs MCC 2005 came third in the MCC Wine Challenge this
                                   year. It also received **** stars and is one of Wine Magazines Editors Choice wines for
                                   October 2009.
                                   Teddy Hall New Releases
                                   Teddy Hall Wines is releasing three new wines this month, the Teddy Hall Winter
                                   Moments Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon to partner the Teddy Hall Summer Moments Chenin
                                   blanc. The other two wines are the Teddy Hall Syrah Reserve and the Teddy Hall
                                   Sauvignon blanc.
                                             Teddy Hall ‘Winter Moments’ Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
                                   A blend of rich ripe black fruit on the nose, lush juicy plums and velvety dark chocolates
                                   with velvety tannins
                                   In The Vineyard
                                   This wine is sourced from Stellenbosch vineyards, planted mainly on broken shale, Table
                                   Mountain Sandstone and some koffiklip with underlying clay. Average yield is 8.4 tons of
                                   fruit per hectare.
                                   The Harvest
                                   Picking was at full ripeness with sugars at 24.8° Balling while the acidity was measured at
                                   6.3g/l average and the pH was 3.4.
                                   In The Cellar
                                   The wine was fermented in open fermenters with regular pump-overs to extract good
                                   colour and tannin. I used French oak staves during maturation to ensure a velvety mouth
                                   feel.
                                   Ageing Potential
                                   This wine is drinking exceptionally well now and will gain in complexity over the next
                                   three years.

                                                                  Teddy Hall Syrah Reserve 2008
                                      The deep purple, almost opaque Syrah Reserve 2008 is a complex wine. The palate is
                                      layered with mulberries and spice particularly apparent, along with a noticeable smoky
                                      Syrah character. The purity of black fruit and concentration is seductive. While still
                                      young, the finish is a touch mouth puckering but being packed with primary fruit flavours
                                      it will gain in complexity and seductiveness with age.
                                      In The Vineyard
                                      The vines which yielded the fruit for this wine were planted in 1995, on broken shale soils
                                      in a prime part of Stellenbosch. And average of 6.7 tons of fruit per hectare was

                                                                 Teddy Hall Sauvignon Blanc 2009
                                      Tasting Notes
                                      Pale straw is the description of the colour on this wine. While the nose provides around
                                      of fig and melons, in the mouth it is tangy and crisp with the same flavours following,
                                      along with some tropical notes too. The refreshing zestiness on the finish is an
                                      enticement to take yet another sip.
                                      In The Vineyard
                                      A combination of both trellised and bush vines were used in the vinification of this
                                      Sauvignon blanc. Planted in 1990 on broken shale the vineyards are mostly dry land
                                      although some vines had the benefit of drip irrigation. Yields averaged out at around 6.5
                                      tons a hectare.

                                      The Harvest
                                      Always an early grape to enter the cellar, the Sauvignon blanc was harvested on 5
                                      February 2009 when the ripeness was measured at 22.8° Balling. Countering the grape

                                   In The Cellar
                                   Keeping Sauvignon blanc cool is essential in order to get the most from the grape. It
                                   arrived at the cellar in the early morning and was lightly pressed before settling overnight
                                   in a stainless steel tank. The clear juice was then racked off and inoculated with Vin 7
                                   yeast and fermented at 10°C. It was also left on its lees for four months in order to
                                   extract the maximum amount of flavour – with the lees also stirred up periodically. The
                                   standard pre-bottling regime of cold stabilization and filtration was then followed. Please
                                   note this wine was bottled under screwcap in order to retain as much flavour and
                                   freshness as possible.
                                   Ageing Potential
                                   Still fresh and zesty, this wine will gain complexity over the first 30 months.

                                   For some time now winemakers Danelle & Bussell have kept a watchful eye on Van
                                   Loveren’s very 1st Methode Cap Classique developing in the cellar nursery. A limited
                                   quantity of bottles were degorged after 9 months on the yeast cells and while the Cap
                                   Classique is actually destined for our signature range (which will be released next year),
                                   we have decided (mostly due to our own excitement!) to put some of this stunning wine
                                   under the Four Cousins label on the market. The Four Cousins Methode Cap Classique is
                                   an elegant sparkling wine with zesty lime and mineral characters. It has refreshing apple
                                   tones with tiny festive bubbles, well balanced by the vibrant acidity and a light yeasty
                                   character. A limited edition methode cap classique wine made for the best of times! With
                                   a trading price of only R 72 this bubbly will do great as a “by the glass” MCC in restaurants
                                   and wine bars.

                                   Rapport Musiek Maestro’s
                                   Van Loveren is a great supporter of the arts and on 13 September we played host to the
                                   Musiek Maestro’s with performances by Jak de Priester, Lize Beekman, Brandon October,
                                   Jannie Moolman and Annake de Villiers. Almost 350 guests enjoyed a truly great
                                   performance. Our next cultural event will take place on 27 November 2009 with Sharleen
                                   Surtie Richards in the role of Shirley Valentine.

                                   Gold for Sauvignon Blanc
                                   At the recent Michelangelo Awards the 2009 Van Loveren Sauvignon blanc was awarded
                                   with a gold medal. This wine has long been a favourite not only of the public (being the
                                   Van Loveren range’s best seller) but also of the Retief family and we were understandably
                                   chuffed with the accolade! Be quick to get your hands on some as stock is flying!

                                   Sauvignon Blanc arguably counts as South Africa’s most popular and best performing
                                   white variety.

                                   In a country so long dominated by Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc has raised its hand as a

                                   Our vineyards located close to the cold Walker Bay Atlantic Ocean enjoy consistent
                                   moderate summer temperatures which provide fine floral flavours. These are enhanced
                                   by heavy clay soils where the flavour tends to be more tropical than herbaceous.

                                   The grapes from vintage 2009 have presented perfect fruit. It was a long dry season with
                                   ideal ripening conditions following a late winter and above average spring rainfall.

                                   This elevated vintage presents a really fresh generously bodied wine with full zesty
                                   aromatic flavours, a long mineral finish and promise to develop with a full palate!

                                                                        Hannibal 2007

                                   Some years ago I described creating the Hannibal Blend as an indulgence; it’s about the
                                   different grapes painting diverse taste colours. It is these taste colours which allow for
                                   Hannibal to be different and eclectically unique.

                                   Creating a wine based on three principle grapes, namely Sangiovese, Pinot noir and
                                   Nebbiolo was started twenty years ago – this with the importation of Sangiovese and
                                   Nebbiolo in 1989. It took twelve years to satisfy the essential nature of this composition.

                                   Vintage 2007 has reverted to receiving a much smaller content of Shiraz than in 2006 –
                                   This time 13 %. Sangiovese dominates with 52 % followed by Pinot noir at 14 % then
                                   Shiraz 13 %, Nebbiolo 9 %, Mourvedre 9 % and Barbera 3 %.

                                   This wine has concentrated dark fruit nose with an austere, gentle palate weight. Tannins
                                   are velvety and offer a slow-pronounced aromatic finish!

                                                                   Dornier Chenin Blanc 2009
                                   Vintage Conditions
                                   The 2009 vintage was hailed one of the best vintages since 2003. Moderately warm climatic
                                   conditions prevailed throughout the growing seasons with relatively little rain resulting in
                                   even vine growth. These characteristics are very desirable for top quality fruit production.
                                   Crop levels however were slightly lower than previous years, but as is often the case it can
                                   lead to more intense fruit expression.
                                   Fermentation and Aging
                                   Fruit for this wine was sourced from the semi-arid Swartland area, well known for its dry-
                                   land bush vine Chenin blanc. Due to a somewhat harsh terroir, the fruit is of exceptional
                                   quality and concentration. The grapes received a light press immediately after arrival at the
                                   cellar followed by fermentation in tank as well as older barrels. The wine remained on the
                                   full lees with regular battonage for a further 5 months before filtering and bottling.

                                   Tasting Note by the Winemaker
                                   Exceptional quality fruit is what distinguishes this wine. Fresh flavours of litchi, ripe, white
                                   pear and peach dominate the nose. A rich, full flavour profile is supported by a
                                   concentrated yet silky mouth-feel along with a distinct mineral quality adding a crisp finish
                                   to the wine.
                                   Food Pairing
                                   Enjoy with most rich seafood dishes, light style chicken dishes, salads and even mild Thai
                                   curry dishes.

That’s my Lula                      Onto the wines, and October sees us release some new vintages. The Rudera Chenin
I’m glad to have her near           Blanc 2008 is showing beautiful clean Chenin flavours on the palate, and is a touch lighter
                                    in weight than the previous years. However, the flavours are complex and we’re
                                    extremely happy with this vintage. The Rudera Robusto 2008 is also out, another cracking
                                    year and the wine is showing the signature round, full-flavoured character that has made
                                    it so sought after.
                                    Not to be overlooked, the new vintages of our Lula Afrika range are also hitting the shelf.
                                    The Lula Afrika Shiraz 2008 and Lula Afrika Chenin 2009 both offer true-to-varietal flavour,
                                    an approachable style and excellent value.
                                    Rudera Chenin Blanc 2008
                                    Tasting Notes
                                    Bright gold, green tinge. Tropical, citrus nose. Baked apples, grapefruit and quince create
                                    a rich palate with savoury complexity. A weighty wine with great balance of wood and
                                    fruit. Lovely long finish.
                                    “Another wonderful expression of Chenin, with hazelnut, lemon balm and nougat notes

                                    In The Vineyard
                                    These Chenin Blanc vineyards are situated on a cool slope in the prime Koelenhof and
                                    Faure area of Stellenbosch. The bush vines were planted on broken shale and
                                    decomposed Table Mountain Sandstone in 1977 and 1986 respectively, and are fully
                                    mature
                                    The Harvest
                                    The grapes were hand-picked in the early morning from old bush vines at between 23.9º
     Kathy Raath Promotions         and 25.7º Balling. The yield was 5.5 tons per hectare with acids above 6.7 g/l and pH
