           Message From President
Follwoing the success of the 67th AGM/ FDI International Convention in June 2010. MDA has now embarked on the next level
by bringing our national conference to the international level.

Many of you might ask, Why international? Life always rides in strength to victory, not through internationalism... but only
through the direct responsibility of MDA to our membership. Like all social theories, internationalism must seek its basis in
the economic, education and technological advancement fields; here are to be found the most profound and the most decisive
factors in the development of our beloved Association.

“Learning is not a product of schooling but the lifelong attempt to acquire it”
~ Albert Einstein - Physicist & Nobel Laureate

The MDA Council has defined our PEACE mission for the next 10 years in the areas of Professional development and integration; Education
through Continuing Education, Conferences & Exhition; Ascencion into key influencial position in international organizations; Community
service through promoting dental awareness campaign; Environmentally conscious in promoting and supporting all environmentally friendly
activities and play an active role in saving our ailing Earth.

The 18th FDI is the ideal platform for us to fulfill our PEACE mission. I am pleased that we have received tremendous support from the
Speakers, sponsors, Traders and fellow members and colleagues from all sectors. Thanks to the relentless effort and leadership of our
Organizing Chairman Dr Teh Tat Beng and his Team.

The Wisma MDA Night will be the breathtaking moment culminating the Conference, this noble project aims at building a Home for our
Dental fraternity and we are pleased that both our Minister and Deputy Minister of Health, YB Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai and YB Datuk Rosnah
have agreed to grace our Wisma MDA Night and would serve as Advisors for our Wisma MDA Board. We hope this noble project would
integrate our profession together exemplery as role model to others.

“What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful.” -- Scott Westerfeld
Let’s all come together during the 18th FDI to live, learn, laugh together and be united behind our PEACE and Wisma MDA visions.

Dato’ Dr How Kim Chuan
President of Malaysian Dental Association

           Message From Organizing Chairman
                   Dear friends and colleagues,
It is my honor and pleasure to invite you to attend the 18th FDI/MDA International Scientific Convention and Trade
Exhibition which will be held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 13 to 16 January 2011, with the theme “Clinical
                   Dentistry: Today and Beyond”
On behalf of the organizing committee, I wish to express our gratitude and appreciation to Yang Berhormat Datuk Hajah
Rosnah Hj Abdul Rashid Shirlin, The Honorable Deputy Minister of Health Malaysia who has kindly consented to officiate
the 18th FDI/MDA International Scientific Convention and Trade Exhibition.

We are also delighted that the 18th FDI/MDA International Convention and Trade Exhibition has received full support of the Ministry of
Health Malaysia, Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur, Tourism Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, MATRADE and MyCEB.

On the Scientific Programme, we are proud to announce that a record of 21 local and internationally renowned experts would be speaking
at the state of art Plenary Hall KLCC, which has a capacity of 3000 seats. In addition, for those who wish to learn new skills and techniques,
make sure you do not miss out on the 7 Hands-On Workshop held in conjunction with the convention.
There are many other programmes organized concurrent with the convention, including Oral and Poster Competition, Lunch Symposium,
Grand Opening Ceremony, Dialogue with MDA members on Scale of Fees and Wisma MDA Night.
The Trade Exhibition shall be of international standards. With more than 150 exhibition booths sold out to date, we are excited to note
that many International and Local Exhibitors have submitted their plans to construct their own booths. These special designed booths
by both multinational and local exhibitors have raised the standard of the 18th FDI/MDA Trade Exhibition comparable to the International
Trade Show like IDEM. We have received overwhelming response from exhibitors of the previous 67th MDA/AGM /FDI event held in June
2010 at KLCC, the majority of whom have come back to participate in the 18th FDI/MDA convention.
Do visit MDA website (under “18th FDI/MDA International Scientific Convention and Trade Exhibition”) for regular updates
and information on the Convention and Trade Exhibition.
The Organizing Committee has pledged to deliver the best and the finest Convention for our local and international delegates. We hope that
this convention will provide the perfect platform to network and interact with Industry leaders and renew friendship with our peers from
all over the globe.
Last but not least, we look forward to welcoming you to the 18th FDI/MDA International Scientific Convention and Trade Exhibition.
Your support is very much appreciated!

I want to present easy and safe sinus bone graft technique for general practitioners.

In modern implant dentistry, sinus bone graft procedure became a common surgical method to overcome insufficient residual
alveolar bone height in posterior maxilla.

Sinus bone graft can be performed via crestal approach or lateral window approach. Because of technical easiness and less
morbidity, crestal approach sinus bone graft method is more popular to general practitioners. The key of this procedure is fracture
the sinus floor without sinus membrane perforation.

Many kinds of tools, from classical osteotomes to specially designed tools, are available to perform crestal approach sinus
    bone graft.

Recently HiOssen CAS Kit was introduced. CAS kit made it easy to fracture the sinus floor without membrane perforation and it
equipped tools to separate membrane widely.

Preparation of root canal system is one the most important procedures in endodontic treatment. The introduction of nickel-
titanium (NiTi) rotary files to endodntics almost tow decades ago has changed the way root canal preparations are performed,
enabling more complicated root canal systems to be shaped faster and with fewer procedural errors.Yet there is always the task to
develop new advanced NiTi systems that can clean and shape root canals with respect to the biological and mechanical objectives
of cleaning and shaping the root canal system.Currently there is more than 30 NiTi systems in the market that are classified
according to their design, shaping characteristics, breakage potential and clinical performance. This presentation is intended to
give clinicians a knowledge base for NiTi rotary use and further aims at enabling them to select a system that is most suitable for
    their needs.

At the hands-on workshop, participants will go through skills training exercises to build up confidence. There will be a microscope
for participants to practise endodontic treatment. Live demonstrations will be projected via microscopic transmission, concurrently
with audience participation to create an interactive learning enviroment. The hands-on course objectives are:

    1. Understand the clinical approach and procedures during root canal treatment to maximise success in your practice of
    2. Understand the evidence based approach on the safe use of rotary nickel –titanium files during root canal instrumentation
        without breaking them
    3. Learn how to confidently instrument and obturate root canals that are severely curved, or fine and narrow to fulfill biological
    4. How to use rotary nickel-titanium files in retreatment
    5. Understand current strategy and current concepts in the retreatment of carrier-based root fillings (Thermafils).
    6. How to locate, penetrate and instrument calcified canals.
    7. How to produce a well obturated root canal system with gutta percha and nickel-titanium spreaders. Learn how to produce
root canal fillings that are dense.
    8. Understand how to use rotary Ni-Ti files to instrument C-shape canals and canals with difficult anatomy
    9. How to treat canal blockages, ledges and missed canals
    10. How to prevent, manage and retrieve separated files from root canals
    11. Incorporate modern concepts of nickel titanium rotary instrumentation into your practice to make root canal treatment
faster, efficient and cost effective for greater job satisfaction
    12. Learn about the new advanced files with inverted tapers that are by far easily retrievable when broken inside canals

Waterlase Dentistry combines laser energy and a spray of water to gently cut teeth, gums and even bone without generating heat,
vibration or pressure. The Laser system can be used to cut hard tissue, soft tissue as well as generating photo-acoustic pulse wave
sterilization of root canal. The ergonomic laser handpiece design never touches the tooth during procedures such as removing
dental decay, eliminating the grinding and heat associated with the drill along with the pain triggered by nerves reacting to heat
and vibration. The system also helps preserve teeth by eliminating vibrations that can create small cracks and fissures in the
               surrounding healthy tooth surface.

Waterlase devices have been approved by the FDA for Dental use in cavity preparation, periodontal treatment, root canals, bone
surgery and a variety of other procedures, and are now used by thousands of dental professionals throughout the world.
In this Laser Workshop, you will learn:

               1. The features and benefits of the Waterlase MD and Diode Laser EZLase.
               2. The use of laser in periodontal debridement, pocket elimination.
               3. How to perform Soft Tissue laser procedures, e.g., gingivectomy, frenectomy, gingivoplasty, crown lengthening, troughing for
                  impression implant second stage surgery.
               4. How to use photo-acoustic waves to sterilize the root canal before the obturation.
               5. How to perform the Hard Tissue procedures such as cavity preparation using the laser.

There would be demonstration as well as Hands-on practice on extracted teeth and animal goat jaw to illustrate specific clinical
application of laser explanation on how to get the most out to improve your clinical results.

                FOR HIGH RETENTION
Aesthetic dentistry is a discipline that requires significant thought process and planning in the preparation for restorative
treatment. It also requires skillful application of aesthetic techniques and dental materials to complete this treatment. This new
program will focus on the techniques and materials required to perform excellent direct and indirect tooth colored restorations in
everyday practice. Everything from tooth preparation, tissue management, impression making, and provisional construction, to
the cementation of final restoration will be discussed.

Special focus will be on compromised situations such as minimum tooth preparation height. What are the retentive features that
clinicians can consider? Is crown lengthening necessary? What are the considering factors? This program will attempt to answer
         these questions.

This session includes demonstration and participant exercises covering techniques for assessing the patient’s oral environment
and the use of adhesive restorative materials in the reconstruction of the worn dentition.

        Specific exercises include:
        Saliva and plaque evaluation
Construction and use of silicone templates and keys for direct restorations
        Techniques with adhesive restorative materials
        Composite resin layering

Introduction: Implant dentistry was once seen as an art and science that was reserved for specialists. It is now increasingly
practised by general practitioner dental surgeons. No doubt, the more difficult cases are still in the realm of
specialists; however, the common everyday implant situation could, and should, be handled by the general

This workshop highlights several issues that are prevalent in implant dentistry today. The topics covered are:

        1. The history of implant dentistry
        2. Basic history, examination, diagnosis of the implant candidate
        3. Setting up of the practice to be ready for implant dentistry
        4. Treatment planning for the implant candidate

Persons submitting an abstract are doing so with the understanding that they must abide by the following policies.

A. Guidelines for Construction of an Abstract
An abstract must not exceed 250 words and be written in good English, using Times New Roman font 12 and a double-spaced

The title must be less than 15 words and typed in capital letters.

The initial letter for the first (and/or middle) name and full last name of the presenter, indicated by an asterisk (*), and co-author(s)
(Degrees omitted) must be provided. For example: S. Krisanaprakornkit*, A. Lamaroon.

This is followed by the institute, city, and country.

The construction of an abstract should be divided into:

Aim or purpose:
In one brief sentence, provide the rational for the investigation and/or the question to be answered, with or without short citation(s)
to published data that is easily available for reference if necessary. The aim implies that case reports cannot be accepted unless the
findings lead to more general statements.
Materials and methods:
The experimental conditions should be reported briefly (i.e. age group, nature of the animals, sex, and approval from the Ethics
Committee at the presenter’s institution). The clinical approach should be precise, and the period of time studied taken into
account in the interpretation. The methods used should also be clearly indicated (i.e. image analysis, biochemical data, histological,
immunohistological or molecular probes used for the analysis of the data, statistical significance).
The results should be stated in a maximum of three sentences.
This is any conclusion(s) that can be drawn from the presentation. This final statement is crucial because it supports the scientific value
of the poster.

Please note that: You may not present previously published or presented work. The official language of the meeting and all
communications must be in English. No commercial products or techniques will be permitted.

B. Evaluation Criteria C. Submission Criteria
The evaluation by the reviewers is based on: An abstract can be rejected if:
1 Scientific or Clinical interest in the question to be assessed 1 Not submitted online.
