Unit I: Personal Communication
Time: 3 weeks
Lesson 1 (1 day)
Objective: Learners will define the term communication.
Activities:
1. Give “pop quiz” from Person to Person teacher’s guide, p 24.
Treat the activity as if it were a quiz:
Say, “Get out several sheets of paper and clear your desks. You
need a pen or pencil. You may not ask any questions except for
clarification of the questions I ask. No additional information will be
given. Answer the questions in the best way you can. Do not discuss
them.”
2. When all questions have been answered, compare answers orally.
Discuss reasons for the differences in answers. Ask students to add
other words or phrases that have special meanings to groups and to
generations.
3. Explain the term communication. Insist that students learn it exactly
this way: sharing meanings. Have a short open forum discussion
about all the ways we communicate. Lead them to include clothing,
hair and makeup, cars…. Give students an overview of how you will
run the whole English IV course. Allow time to questions and
clarifications.
4. Read aloud “The King of Beasts,” from Science Fact/Fiction, except
DO NOT read the last sentence. Ask students to fill that in. Discuss
the viability of such an occurrence, and link to the definition of
communication for lesson closure.
Evaluation: Informal observation of responses. Students can define
communication and recognize its occurrence.
