Please realize that the focus of RSP was never intended to be a pension mess. When this is over
and done with, I will direct this email and website in a lighter direction. I post almost every email
that I receive, with last names removed unless granted permission. The editor does not always
agree with contributors, but protects their right to share opinion We will share info that we think
our community will find pertinent and enjoyable. Thank you for staying in touch and happy

The following are the RSP email archives that I still have, complete with grammar and mis-spelled
SNAFU's! Caution, when reading archives keep in mind our world is a dynamic place and many
bits of information become dated and are super-ceded by later updated info.

and are playing all over the Southeast. They recorded in the late
sixties ... you may have heard their 1965 National Hit “Lonely

in the Southeast during that time. They will certainly make this event
one you will remember!!!
RE: Above
Dave,

I've been reading all of the important information you send out to us...but, I'm a little disappointed
that I don't remember seeing the invitation for ALL retirees and future retirees that were invited to
the REUNION...and that ALL proceeds go to the RAP (Retiree Assistance Program) which assists
ALL retirees & even Pilots in need.

I'm attaching the flyer in hopes that we have some pilots that will come and support our event! It is
a total fundraiser and I really miss seeing all of my fellow pilots I flew with many years ago.

thanks Bettie Wooten-Asip

DP3 Member Survey
October 10, 2008

Earlier this week, DP3 sent to the membership a new survey in order to get your
opinions about DP3 and some feedback and thoughts on subjects such as our past
performance, our current projects, the agenda on which we should focus going
forward, and your level of willingness to support us in the future.

If your email address in our database is correct, you should have received an
announcement that the survey was coming, and a day later an actual invitation to
take the survey.

Some of our emailed invitations to you bounced because of invalid email addresses,
which is expected if you have not kept DP3 advised of changes to your current
contact information. If you have ever been a member of DP3, Honor Roll or
not, and did not receive the announcement and invitation to participate,
please send us a quick change of email address notice to
contactus@dp3.org and we will correct our database and send you a new
invitation to participate in our survey.

As to the survey itself, we’re getting reports of some members with valid email
addresses not receiving the survey. In every case so far, spam filters or ISP controls
have been inappropriately removing our messages as spam. Let us know if you have
not received the survey and you’re sure it’s not trapped by your security software or
blocked by pop-up blockers, and we will re-send the survey to you.

IATA Warns Of Airline Bankruptcies As Passenger Growth Slows
SEPTEMBER 30, 2008

HANOI (Dow Jones)--The International Air Transport Association warned Tuesday that at least 20
international airlines are at risk of bankruptcy amid financial turmoil in the U.S., elevated jet fuel prices
and a slowdown in passenger growth.

"The global industry is in a perfect storm of high fuel costs and falling demand," IATA director-general and
chief executive Giovanni Bisignani said at a press conference in Hanoi.

The financial turmoil in the U.S. is also affecting the airline industry and "at least 20 airlines are at risk," he
said without naming the carriers.

The association, which represents 230 airlines, said international passenger growth slowed to 1.3% in
August from July's "disappointing" 1.9% increase.
International freight traffic in August fell 2.7%, the third consecutive month of decline following drops of
1.9% in July and 0.8% in June.

Fuel costs for airlines in August were 30% higher than a year earlier despite the global crude oil price
recently retreating from record highs, Giovanni said.

IATA forecasts the global airline industry will make a loss of $5.2 billion this year and $4.1 billion in 2009.

"The industry crisis is deepening and no region is immune," Giovanni said.

Airlines need lower taxes, reduced airport charges, and improved operating efficiency to reduce costs, he
said.

Is Your Money Safe?
by Ron Lieber and Tara Siegel Bernard
Wednesday, October 1, 2008

provided by

For all of you on Main Street who have been watching the turmoil on Wall Street
for the last few weeks, Monday's shockwaves rattled even the most steadfast.
The day began with the announcement that another big bank -- Wachovia -- had
been taken over, just days after Washington Mutual collapsed and was sold. In
early afternoon, the House rejected the bailout package for the financial industry.
Stocks plunged, with the Dow ending the day down nearly 778 points in the worst
single-day drop in two decades.
What is a regular investor to make of it all? What about people who have money
in bank accounts? Below are some answers to questions that are probably on
your mind.

Q. Why did the stock market fall so far so fast on Monday?
A. The element of surprise surely didn't help, since everyone was expecting the
bailout bill to pass. There may have been a bit of investor disgust thrown in, too,
a sense that our representatives in Washington just don't get it.
Fear may be the biggest driver, however -- the worry that it may be weeks or
longer before companies can get the affordable, short-term loans they need to
finance their operations. Without easy access to that money, it's hard to run a
profit-making operation on a day-to-day basis, let alone grow over the long haul.
The professional investors who often drive big market moves don't want to hold
onto stocks to see if things will really get that bad

IRA Discussion Section:
From time to time I will run articles below that are pertinent to large IRA's. One of the
things that most of us have in common is the fact that our retirement is now centered
around a rather large IRA (or two) that has it's advantages and dis-advantages. Owning
"qualified" assets in a traditional IRA is sometimes full of challenges that we didn't
necessarily count on. Most of these challenges involve how to minimize tax and maximize
estate planning. I will insert IRA information for our group to mull over.

Delta Museum to host Atlanta Airline Collectibles Show & Sale
10/18
Date: Thu, 25 Sep 2008 17:23:22 -0400
From: "Meng, Tiffany M"
Dear Pioneers, Clipped Wings, and Golden Wings:

On Saturday, Oct. 18th the Delta Air Transport Heritage Museum is hosting its second annual
Atlanta Airline Collectibles Show as a fundraiser for the Museum. Attached
please find information about the event. If possible, could you please pass this along to your
members?

The event will be open to the public and admission is $5, with kids under 12 free, and early birds
$10. The event will run from 9am to 4pm and should be a fun time. The airline collectibles show
is a big fundraiser for the Museum and is a great way to get exposure to the aviation community.
(The early bird admission price of $10 is from 6am-9am only. That is when the dealers are
scheduled to arrive and set up. If serious collectors want to come before the show starts and get
first dibs, this gives them that opportunity. Otherwise, the show opens at 9am.)

One thing to note, The Spirit of Delta will be open 9am-4pm that day. It will not be open during
dealer set up. The Museum and Spirit will be open for visitors and a wide variety of vendors will
be selling aviation-related items ranging from vintage crew pins and playing cards to airplane
seats and aviation art.

This is the one day of the year the Museum is open to the general public on a Saturday. This
makes it a great day to bring church groups, scout troops, and your friends and family. No prior
appointments need to be made as entrance will be through a special gate on the south side of
campus, near the Renaissance Hotel.

More information will be posted shortly on our website, www.deltamuseum.org.

Thank you for helping spread the word.

1914 Norway trip descendents consider Lincoln
visit
Janell Cole N.D. Capitol Bureau
Published Sunday, September 07, 2008
thedickinsonpress.com

BISMARCK — In 1914, the teen-aged son of Walsh County homesteaders was
tapped to carry the American flag during a parade in an Oslo, Norway, park.

The boy, William Skjerven, and his parents, were among the North Dakotans who
traveled with Gov. L.B. Hanna to present a bust of Abraham Lincoln to the people of
Norway to celebrate the centennial of Norwegian independence. That Lincoln bust,
sculpted by a young Valley City State University student, still stands today in
Oslo’s Frogner Park and is famous for having been the site of annual silent
protests during Norway’s Nazi occupation. The student sculptor, Paul Fjelde, went
on to considerable renown.
A replica of the Oslo Lincoln bust is on the lawn at the Traill County Courthouse in
Hillsboro.

Next year, to mark the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth, North Dakotans and former
North Dakotans plan to make a group excursion to Fjelde’s Lincoln bust in Oslo
and take part in an annual June 28 ceremony.

William Skjerven’s grandson, David Skjerven of Crystal Lake, Ill., plans to be
among them, along with several other Skjerven progeny. David Skjerven said he
told “a whole bunch of family members about it,― including his four sisters,
after reading of the proposed trip in North Dakota Horizons magazine.
“Three of them are very excited about it and probably will be going,― Skjerven
said. The Skjerven delegation will likely include some of his children and
grandchildren, too, he said. “It should be a fun event,― he said.

Skjerven, 60, is a retired Delta Airlines pilot. He had personally heard the tale of
the original trip from his grandfather while growing up in Park River. He and his wife,
Caryn, have visited Norway and the Lincoln bust many times. They always pick up
some cheese, bread and shrimp “and have lunch in front of the statue,― he
said.

Another traveler next summer may be former Fargo resident George Sarsten of
Billings, Mont., whose great uncle, Solomon G. Sarsten, was also in the 1914
delegation and kept a diary of the trip. The diary tells of the travelers leaving
Minneapolis June 7 and passing through England on June 16, he said. They arrived
home Aug. 7. Solomon Sarsten was a pastor of a rural church outside Litchville,
George Sarsten said.

Grand Forks travel agent Char Rustan Brekke of Brekke Tours and Travel is
arranging next year’s trip along with the University of North Dakota Nordic
Initiative and Horizons magazine.

Brekke said there’s been a lot of initial interest in what will likely be about a
nine-day trip that will cover other parts of Norway as well as Oslo. Planning is
continuing and those interested will receive more information by calling Brekke at
800-437-5302 or e-mailing tours@brekketours.com.
Brekke was chosen because her company is a Scandinavian destination specialist
travel agency. In addition to arranging and leading tours to the Old Country, she also
helps Scandinavian residents visit the Upper Midwest.

Janell Cole works for Forum Communications Co., which owns The Dickinson Press.

RE: Update on Dave Cozad condition.

First of all I hope this goes through. Norton doesn't always permit my stuff to send.
Thank you for all the personal Emails. I will respond as soon as I can but wanted to give you a general
update. As most of you know I discovered a colon rectal tumor in 2004. It matasticized to my lungs in
2006. My life expectancy initially was only a couple of years but as you can see four and a half years later I
am still here. After several surgeries, thirty some sessions of Chemotherapy, Radiation, etc.etc. we finally
got it into remission last fall. I have done most of my work at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston
Texas. I return to Houston quarterly for a full battery of tests. In May the results were great but my scans
in September showed all three tumors in my lungs had started to grow again. There are two tumors in my
right lung and one in the left. All are not operable. The turmor in the left lung had grown into the
bronchial tube and was about 90% blocked.
Yesterday, Oct 9, a thoracic surgeon removed the tissue out of the bronc and placed two stints to keep it
open. I am breathing again and I must say it is a really nice feeling. At this point a cure is not very likely
since if they hit me too hard with radiation etc. they could do more damage than good. I will do one more
series of Chemo since there is a new one this cancer has not yet experienced. I am working with a team of
doctors to extend my life, with quality, as long as reasonable. We should still have a few good months.
This is now the fourth time I was told I would die so I have had plenty of time to get my affairs in order.
This past summer was the best I have ever had. I am enjoying life every day and really have been blessed
with a great sense of peace. You guys have been great and are a terrific source of encouragement. Hope to
see you at the DC9 layover. David Cozad

Misc. Emails Contributors:
Saw this statement from Ron in RPS 143.

I think I can answer his questions: because a few thousand retired "rich" airline pilots don't have
enough political clout to turn heads in DC. And, by the way, greed WILL be allowed...have a nice
day.

"What better example of such greed could be found than the termination of the pensions for
thousands of pilots who put their hearts and skills into their jobs for 25-35 years? And especially
now, as half of those politicians are running for re-election, isn't there a good possibility that many
will respond, and use this as another talking-point example of greed that is not going to be
allowed?"

Mark,

Here's a question for you: what is the financial soundness of PBGC in light of all that's going on
with the likes of Fannie & Freddie ?

The vote whores in DC going to bailout PBGC when/if it becomes insolvent ? I'd hate to have to
cut back to half a six pack from the money they now send me.

Bill

Editior's note: The great thing about the PBGC is that we enjoy the "full faith and credit"
of the federal government. When our next president is elected no doubt our faith will spike
higher and get even better.

Subject: Marine Aesop Fable

Please apply this to either party, both parties, or the candidate of your choice.

An old sea story

There's an old sea story in the Marine Corps about a lieutenant who
inspected his Marines in the field, and afterward told the "Gunny" that the
men smelled bad. The lieutenant suggested the solution is that they should
change underwear.
The Gunny responded, "Aye, aye, sir, I'll see to it immediately!"

The Gunny went straight to the squad tent and announced, "The lieutenant
thinks you guys smell bad, and wants you to change your underwear. Smith,
you change with Jones, McCarthy, you change with Witkowsky, and Brown,
you
change with Schultz. Now get to it!"

THE MORAL: A candidate may promise 'change' in Washington , but don't
count
on things smelling any better.

Subject: Blind Ambition...
Blind Ambition
by: John Kanary, A Cup of Chicken Soup for the Soul
Charlie Boswell has always been one of my heroes. He has inspired me and thousands of others
to rise above circumstances
and live our true passion. Charlie was blinded during World War II while rescuing his friend from a
tank that was under fire. He
was a great athlete before his accident and in a testimony to his talent and determination he
decided to try a brand new sport, a
sport he never imagined playing, even with his eyesight . . . golf!
Through determination and a deep love for the game he became the National Blind Golf
Champion! He won that honor 13 times.
One of his heroes was the great golfer Ben Hogan, so it truly was an honor for Charlie to win the
Ben Hogan Award in 1958.
Upon meeting Ben Hogan, Charlie was awestruck and stated that he had one wish and it was to
have one round of golf with
the great Ben Hogan. Mr. Hogan agreed that playing a round together would be an honor for him
as well, as he had heard about all of Charlie's
accomplishments and truly admired his skills.
"Would you like to play for money, Mr. Hogan?" blurted out Charlie.
"I can't play you for money, it wouldn't be fair!" said Mr. Hogan.
"Aw, come on, Mr. Hogan...$1,000 per hole!"
"I can't, what would people think of me, taking advantage of you and your circumstance," replied
the sighted golfer.
"Chicken, Mr. Hogan?"
"Okay," blurted a frustrated Hogan, "but I am going to play my best!"
"I wouldn't expect anything else," said the confident Boswell.
"You're on Mr. Boswell, you name the time and the place!"
A very self-assured Boswell responded "10 o'clock . . . tonight!"
