For many people, realizing their body is not what it used to be is a daily reality.
So common, in fact, that they give these now recurring shortcomings a name,
like a familiar companion! When it rains, my friend gets up from her chair slowly
with great difficulty, looks my way, rolls her eyes and says, „Arthur is back.‟
The fellow at the corner market hobbles to the shelf to reach for his purchase
with a grimace, explaining that Charlie is giving him trouble again.

If you are living with
     joint swelling, warmth and redness
     joint tenderness
     loss of motion in your joints
     joints that are out of alignment
you are likely one of the estimated 46 million Americans who have been
diagnosed with arthritis.

The word arthritis means joint inflammation. Inflammation is a natural body
reaction to disease or injury, and includes swelling, pain, and stiffness. Since
there are over 100 types of arthritis, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis,
and gout it is no wonder that arthritis is, according to the Arthritis Foundation
(AF), one of the most prevalent chronic health problems and the nation's leading
cause of disability among Americans over 15. Although most of us think getting
old and having arthritis go hand in hand, 300,000 children under the age of 18
have been diagnosed with juvenile arthritis.

What if we could just walk away from this menace? About this time every
year, in recognition of Arthritis Awareness Month, WALK is just exactly what
                   people of all ages are urged to do with the encouragement of
                   the Arthritis Foundation. Since half of those living with arthritis
                   don't think anything can be done to help them, the Arthritis
                   Foundation sponsors a walk event nationwide to raise
                   awareness and funds to fight arthritis. You may have heard
                   the term Let's Move Together®. That short phrase helps the
Arthritis Foundation tell a big story about joint wellness for you and your family
while helping people learn more about fighting arthritis.

Medically, the benefits of walking are undisputed, says Little Rock, Ark.,
orthopedic surgeon John Yocum, MD. Cardiovascular exercise such as walking
can reduce the risk of heart disease and improve heart function and muscle tone,
as well as lower blood pressure, cholesterol, risk of stroke, and risk of injury,
says Yocum. In addition, he says, "improving strength around the joints can help
with degenerative joint disease."
There are many ways you can begin a walking                                 program,
the easiest being just to step outside and put one                         foot     in
front of the other! Be certain to check with your                              doctor
before beginning a new exercise program. Select                                   the
proper shoes and don‟t forget to stretch before                            and after
each walk.
There are lots of walking programs to choose from so you may already belong to
a waking group at church, in the neighborhood or at the fitness center. If you
need help getting started you may want to explore Walk With Ease, the AF
program designed to help you take the first step toward making exercise a habit.

MALL WALKING: If you want a safe indoor walking spot, the local shopping mall
is where you will find walkers (and talkers) enjoying their morning stroll in climate

WATER WALKING: Take it to the pool and allow the buoyancy of the water
support body weight easing the joints. Use a floatation belt for a totally impact

POLE WALKING: Using two poles to bump up a walking workout is the reason

Now that the world famous Music City Marathon is behind us, Let's Move
Together® is the up and coming action mantra, this one sponsored by the
Arthritis Foundation to get you started on your walk toward wellness and arthritis
awareness. Sumner County already completed its annual AF walk, gathering
April 19 at the Goodlettsville Cumberland Presbyterian Church for exercise, fun
and friendship featuring an encore performance by Garage Band Revival. Two
