Introduction
Effective June 30, 2004, Nortel Networks is providing Notice of Intent to Manufacture Discontinue the
PQC2-based version of the 4 port DS3 Frame Relay Function Processor used on Passport 15000/20000.
Customers who have standardized on this Function Processor on the Passport 15000/20000 platform should
review current and future needs for this product, to determine whether additional purchases of this FP are
required before the Manufacture Discontinue takes effect.

The majority of Passport 15000/20000 customers now choose to deploy the higher performance PQC12-
based 4 port DS3 Frame Relay FP (Product Code NTHR89AA) to meet their future growth requirements,
so the NTHR88DB is seeing declining demand.

December 31, 2004 will be the 'last ship date'

The 4 port DS3 Frame Relay FP (PQC2-based) became generally available in March 2000. At the time of
its introduction it was anticipated it would have a shortened life as the PQC (Packet Queue Controller)
ASIC evolved to PQC12 and became generally available as NTHR89AA in August 2001.

Definitions

Manufacture Discontinue Definition – This notice serves as formal communication of Nortel Networks
intent to manufacture discontinue (MD) the product(s) noted. No further orders will be accepted as of the
date shown above. The MD of these products should not be interpreted as the discontinuance of any Nortel
Networks agreements to support the existing field population. Services to the existing product base will
continue to be provided until the End of Life (EOL) date shown above.

End of Life Definition – Prior to the EOL date noted above, another notice will be published to serve as
formal communication of Nortel Networks intent to end the life of the product(s) noted. After that date, no
further support will be provided. Emergency recovery and/or upgrades may be performed in accordance
with customer specific service plans or upgrade agreements as negotiated prior to EOL.

Software Dependencies

Software support for NTHR88DB (and previous vintage NTHR88DA) will continue to be provided in
accordance with the published software support policy for PCR releases until the End-of-Life date – see
“CDN Passport Policies and Guidelines” document – available from your Nortel Networks account
representative.

Alternative/Replacement Products/Solutions
NTHR89AA          4 port DS3 Frame Relay FP (PQC12-based)

The PQC12-based NTHR89AA 4-port DS3 Frame Relay FP has the following distinct enhanced
characteristics over the PQC2-based NTHR88DB:
    • higher frame processing capacity (FrUNI, FrNNI, FrATM, IP-over-Frame)
    • improved multilink frame performance

The PQC12-based NTHR89AA FP allows for continued Frame Relay service inter-working with any
installed PQC2-based NTHR88DB (or NTHR88DA) and other Passport Frame Relay FPs.

The minimum PCR software release required to deploy NTHR89AA is PCR 3.0 for basic Frame Relay
capabilities. Support for IP-over-Frame and FrATM hardware datapath requires PCR 4.2 (or later). Support
for Frame Relay Trace requires PCR 5.2 (or later).
