Teachers observe that fifth grade students typically performing at the Advanced level of
language usage demonstrate an in-depth understanding of grade-level skills and the
writing process and can effectively connect the writing task to purpose and audience. On
the ISAT Language Usage Test, fifth grade students typically performing at the
Advanced level consistently identify a clear main idea, supporting details, and a
conclusion. These students also consistently recognize that correct sequence, transition,
precise word choice and descriptive phrases improve meaning, clarity, and organization.
Students at this level regularly edit for correct sentence structure and grade-level spelling,
grammar, capitalization, and punctuation.

In the area of language usage, fifth grade students typically performing at the Advanced
level demonstrate an in-depth understanding of grade-level skills. These students

Fifth grade students typically performing at the Advanced level consistently demonstrate
a thorough understanding of grade-level mathematics. They use the numeration system,
measurement concepts, estimation, and tools, complex numeric and algebraic
expressions, and probability concepts in order to solve real-world problems. Students
model real-world situations using challenging patterns, geometric concepts, and data
displays. Students show the ability to consistently perform challenging calculations,
convert units of measurement, plot first quadrant points on a coordinate grid, solve
challenging equations, and apply statistical measures as a way to demonstrate their
understanding of the relationships between mathematics and the world around them.

In the area of mathematics, fifth grade students typically performing at the Advanced
level consistently demonstrate a thorough understanding of grade-level skills. These
students
        • demonstrate an excellent understanding of place value and the numeration
        system.

Fifth grade students typically performing at the Advanced level demonstrate a thorough
understanding of reading skills expected of all students in the areas of reading process,
and comprehension and interpretation at this grade level. Students consistently use
complex strategies to interpret and comprehend a wide variety of grade-level text,
including, but not limited to, applying common root words, prefixes, and suffixes to
determine meaning of complex words, applying central ideas and interpreting details to
summarize, and analyzing the main problem, conflict, and resolution.

In the area of reading, fifth grade students typically performing at the Advanced level
demonstrate a thorough understanding of grade-level skills. These students
        • consistently use the features of texts to find information and support
        understanding.
        • consistently apply common root words, prefixes, and suffixes, including those
        derived from Greek and Latin, to determine meaning of complex words.
        • consistently identify author’s purpose.
        • consistently apply cause and effect relationships to gain meaning from text,
        draw valid conclusions based on information from text, and cite evidence from

        summarize information from expository texts.

Advanced
Fifth grade students typically performing at the Advanced level consistently demonstrate the
ability to use their understanding of the world around them to solve real-world problems.
Students understand how to use multiple observations, data, models, and measurement systems to
make predictions and inference during scientific inquiry. Students demonstrate a clear
understanding of multiple systems, characteristic differences of matter, basic cell structure, Earth
interactions, the rock cycle, complex environmental issues, the relationship between science and
technology, and natural resources. Understanding these scientific concepts allows the student to
more fully understand the world around them.

In the area of Nature of Science, fifth grade students typically performing at the Advanced level
demonstrate an in-depth understanding of grade-level skills. These students
         • understand different systems then analyze changes that occur in and among systems.
         • understand how to use multiple observations, data, and models as evidence to make
         predictions, explanations, and inferences.
         • select and understand how to use multiple tools to appropriately measure in customary
         and metric systems.
         • classify objects or systems based on the relationship between the shape or form and its
         use or function.

In the area of Physical Science, fifth grade students typically performing at the Advanced level
