Fr. J.L.Reynolds Assembly 1670 Fourth Degree Reach your Highest Potential PATRIOTISM The dictionary calls it: “A love and loyal support of one’s country.” ABOUT THE FOURTH DEGREE? “Patriotism” is the principle of our Order. Shortly after his election to the office of Supreme Knight in 1899, Edward L. Hern formed a special committee to design a new Degree. The ceremonial was approved in August 1899, and the first exemplification of the new Degree was on February 22, 1900 in New York City which coincided with Washington’s Birthday. The ceremonial for the Fourth Degree expounds on the virtues of Catholic citizenship. To qualify for membership at the time, one had to have ... served the ORDER, the CHURCH, the COMMUNITY and the COUNTRY with distinction for three years. What is the Fourth Degree? The Fourth Degree is the highest and most prestigious degree within the Knights of Columbus. The Assembly is made up of a group of outstanding Knights who are dedicated to the service of their Church, Country and the Order. These Sir Knights exemplify the Fourth Degree by supporting religious, civic and charitable causes. The Regalia (Uniform) Of the Fourth Degree The cape, chapeau, sword and tuxedo were inspired by the naval officers’ uniform of the late 1800’s. The ceremonial sword is worn to symbolize Christian Knighthood. As Sir Knights, we defend our Church, our Country and our freedom as citizens. We also show reverence for the Eucharist and respect for the clergy.
