Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, this diverse System of 500+ refuges encompassing over 92 million acres of lands and waters spans the continent from Alaska’s Arctic tundra to the tropical forests in Florida; from the secluded atolls of Hawaii to the moosetrodden bogs of Maine. National wildlife refuges were established for many different purposes. Most were established to protect and enhance wetlands for the conservation of migratory birds; some were established to provide habitat for the Nation’s endangered species. Within refuge habitats exist a diversity of plants and animals that have their own special requirements for survival. Deserts, grasslands, mountains, and coastal wetlands are distinguishing features of western refuges. These are home to antelope, bighorn sheep, sandhill cranes, elk, waterfowl, bison, marine mammals, and a variety of shorebirds. Alaska’s refuges encompass millions of acres of mountains, tundras, grasslands, lakes, rivers, woodlands, glaciers, and islands. Over 12 million ducks, geese, and swans exodus from Alaska each fall to winter in the lower 48 states. Another 40 million seabirds breed on refuge islands near Alaska’s coastline. Hundreds of thousands of caribou annually wind their way through the vast horizons of Arctic tundra. Forest areas may be thinned, planted, harvested, or burned to benefit wildlife. For example, burning woody undergrowth stimulates the growth of tender shoots as food for Florida’s endangered Key deer. Not all refuge lands are manipulated. Within the Refuge System, 21 million acres of wilderness— an area larger than the states of Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, New Jersey, and Massachusetts combined—allow species as diverse as Florida panthers, green sea turtles, piping plovers, and Barren-ground caribou to survive in undisturbed surroundings. While “national wildlife refuge” evokes images of land teeming with birds, mammals, and other animals, refuges also safeguard important archaeological and historic sites. These range from ancient Native American campsites to World War II artifacts to recent historic properties that reflect local lifestyles and traditional cultures. Prairie pothole refuges of the northcentral U.S. are punctuated by hundreds of thousands of ponds, lakes, and marshes critical as waterfowl breeding areas. This area, extending well into Canada, can give rise to 25 million migratory waterfowl each fall. National wildlife refuges protect virtually every type of habitat—food, water, cover, and space— for the survival of fish and wildlife. Refuges provide habitat for over 200 endangered and threatened species as well as hundreds of other birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects and plants. Over 60 refuges have been acquired specifically to protect endangered species. Management— Key to Success The National Wildlife Refuge System features the world’s most comprehensive wildlife management program. Sound management ensures that the breeding, feeding, and space needs of a diversity of species are maintained and protected. Periodic burning, grazing, or harvesting of grasslands or marshes stimulates growth of new plants for food and cover. Sandhill cranes, elk, and the endangered Attwater prairie chicken are a few of the species which benefit from such techniques. In the prairie pothole region and others, thousands of acres are planted in native grasses as nesting cover for waterfowl. S. This sign represents a partnership of Federal and State agencies and private conservation organizations who are promoting “Watchable Wildlife” opportunities to help you enjoy your public lands and learn about the value of America’s wildlife and their special places. Through cooperative efforts of Federal and State agencies, private organizations and individuals, the Refuge System is a model of stewardship by the American people to conserve their precious natural resources. Management activities may include shifting areas of public use on a refuge to protect nesting bald eagles, setting a controlled burn to rejuvenate certain plants for food or cover, restoring wetlands for waterfowl, or growing crops that attract wildlife back to their native homes. Steve Van Riper / USFWS A Great Idea, Getting Better The first national wildlife refuge, Florida’s Pelican Island, was established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903 to protect egrets, herons, and other birds that were being killed for feathers used in the fashions of the time. Since 1903, increased urbanization, changes in agricultural practices, drought, pollution, and drainage and development of wetlands continue to take their toll on America’s wildlife habitat. On national wildlife refuges, a diversity of habitats are protected, restored and managed to benefit wildlife and as a result, the American people.
