(a) Research background including Hypothesis /Research Questions and Literature Reviews.
Keterangan latar belakang penyelidikan termasuk kenyataan hipotesis / persoalan penyelidikan dan kajian
literatur.
The fast movement towards e-learning is obviously motivated by the many benefits it offers.
From the pedagogical perspective, this powerful means of instruction can: Accommodates the three distinct
learning styles of auditory learners, visual learners, and kinesthetic learners; Support collaborative learning,
individualized instruction, active learning and student-centred instruction. Many Malaysian schools with their
existing technological infrastructure are quite ready to accept e-learning activities. Some features of web portals
that run on learning management system offer teachers with diversified teaching materials while the students can
enjoy learning from a wide range of activities such as lessons, quizzes, chats, assignments and e-forum. The
quizzes format are designed with such flexibility allowing different ways of testing and grading as well as
generating informative feedbacks. This strength may make students feel rewarded since their thinking effort is
not simply rejected as the marking scheme is more reasonable compare to common practices. Certainlyly, this
kind of web portal has the potential to change the way students learn. Their mode of navigation, the way they
interact with the resources and the way they engage in the activities will determine the impact of the new culture
towards learning. Besides being interesting, it will be useful to find out how learning patterns can influence
achievement and what are the different behaviors between the male and female students.
(b) Objective (s) of the Research
To investigate students' learning behavior while interacting with web portal activities and resources.
To determine the relationship between learning behaviour and achievement
To compare learning behaviour with respect to gender.
(c) Methodology
1. To design an experimental research.
2. To develope pre-test, post-test, questionnaires and interview items
3. To get students from two different schools to participate in using the web portal for a duration
of fourmonths.
4. Monitoring of students learning behavior from web portal database..
5. Collecting data from questionnaires and interviews.
6. Analyzing data from questionnaires, interviews and web portal database.
7. Writing reports and papers
8. Publication and oral presentation
(d) Expected Results/Benefit
The research findings is expected to answer some valuable questions related to learning mathematics in
an innovative and dynamic learning environment. These question includes: How can the web portal facilitate
learning among the high achievers, medium and low achievers? What kind of learning behaviors support
successful learning? When come to learning mathematics, the situation in Malaysia is unique since the females
perform better than the males. This lead to our curiosity to find answers to:What are the needs of male and
female learners? All these findings are not only important for the developers of web portal, but also will benefit
learners, teachers, schools and parents. Finally, the research will produce a master thesis two journal papers and
four international conference papers.
