FAFSA Filing Options
• Online FAFSA on the Web
• Paper FAFSA
– Note: Paper FAFSAs are no longer available to colleges or high
schools.
– A student/parent may request a paper FAFSA by calling
800-4-FED-AID or may print a PDF of the application at
www.federalstudentaid.ed.gov.

Application Processing Tips
• Gather necessary documents ahead of time.
• Complete a FAFSA on the Web Worksheet available at
www.fafsa.ed.gov.
• Allow ample time to complete form for submission by
deadline.
• Check the FAFSA for accuracy prior to submission.
• Save all work periodically.
• Sign the application using the student’s and at least one
parent’s PIN.
• Print out a copy of the FAFSA before submitting data.
• Keep a copy of the Submission Confirmation Page.

• List your name and social security number exactly as they appear on your social
security card.
• The online application will also ask for your first name and middle initial. Use your
legal name – not your nickname.
• The online application will also ask for your date of birth. Be certain to use your birth
year, not the current year.
• All items will be compared through the Social Security Administration’s database.

• If U.S. citizen, status will be confirmed by Social Security match.
• If eligible non-citizen, status will be confirmed by Department of
Homeland Security (DHS) match.
• If neither A nor B, you are ineligible for federal/state aid, but might
still be eligible for state or institutional funds.

If eligible non-citizen, write in your eight- or nine-digit Alien
Registration Number (ARN)
• Leave the first space blank if you have an eight digit ARN
• Copy of Permanent Resident Card might be requested by the financial
aid office

• Conviction was removed from record or occurred before age 18 (unless tried

purposes and are NOT required to provide parental information

• Parents’ Marital Status as of Today: Parents should indicate their
marital status as of the day they are completing the FAFSA. Only a
parent who was never married should use the “Single” response.
• Date of marriage, separation, divorce, or widowed: Parents
should indicate the date of their marital status. A parent who was
never married should leave this question blank.

• List the Social Security numbers, last names, first initials, and dates of birth
of the parent(s) required to report information on the FAFSA.
• It is important that the parents list their last names and first initials exactly as
the information appears on their Social Security card so they will pass the
Social Security Administration’s database match.
• If parents do not have Social Security numbers, they should enter all
zeroes. Leaving this question blank may result in a delay in processing of
the FAFSA.

• Indicate the two-digit state code for your parents’
permanent address.
• If the answer to the question is “no,” enter the month and
year residency began for your parent who has been a
legal resident of that state the longest.

• Indicate your parents’ current tax filing status for 2008
– Have your parents completed a 2008 IRS tax return?
– Which tax return did or will your parents file for 2008?
• Tax filers are generally eligible to submit a 1040A or 1040EZ if they:
– make less than $100,000 and
– do not itemize deductions and
– do not earn any income from self-employment from a business or farm and
– do not receive alimony and
– have no capital gains requiring Schedule D filing.

Indicate if you, your parents, or anyone in your parents’
household received benefits in 2007 or 2008 from any of the
federal programs listed.

If a person quits their job, he/she is generally not
considered a dislocated worker – even if he/she is
receiving unemployment benefits.

• If your parents have not yet filed their 2008 federal tax return
information, you should estimate information for these questions.
• If your parents have completed their 2008 federal tax return, use
2008 tax return information to complete this item.
• Use W-2 forms and other records to list all income in 2008 earned from
work (including income earned from self-employment)

– Use U.S. Income tax paid (or to be paid)
– Do not use the amount withheld from your parents’ paychecks
• Enter your parents’ exemptions for 2008

federal tax return.
